Love this restaurant! Was concerned that ownership had changed but happy to find out that the chef has taken over. We were there for Sunday brunch and my 92 yr old mother-in-law enjoyed a bowl of onion-fennel soup on that cold day. I opted for one of the best burgers in a long time and my husband enjoyed beef cheeks - WOW.
We will return often.
Castagna is always exceptional in the quality of the food and the ambiance.
Castagna is a real neighborhood gem with its tasty French cuisine and great service! Cozy space, just a few tables, perfect for a date. We went there for Valentine's Day. The special menu was amazing. It started with an amuse bouche with ratatouille. It reminded me of my South of France! Then a delicious spinach salad with Foie Gras. Followed by Sea bass and a lobster risotto. And finally we shared a Financier and a berry tart. Everything was very good, full of flavor! And the service is friendly yet efficient and professional. We spent some time talking with the owner, Stephane, who's super nice. Will definitely go back.
The food was excellent and the service delightful.
Quiet when we arrived, but as people started coming in, the waiter got VERY busy.
The discovery of this little French is a hidden jewel. The moment we walked in the food, service & ambience around us insure a delightful dinning experience. To the owner, server & chef , ill see you on my exit visit toSF
Very reliable authentic tastes from Southern Provençe. Friendly, classy service. A favorite standby for visiting friends. Very much recommended.
Very nice, not noisy, and the service was perfect. Our waiter recommended a very nice bottle of wine, which was in our price range. Food was delicious. Thank you.
I love visiting this restaurant. The staff are awesome and you often see the Chef who comes out to talk to customers. The food is beautifully prepared and tasty and they always make you feel welcome.
It was a very fun family dinner. The people were so friendly and made my daughters birthday memorable. Loved the French Italian influence.
A local neighborhood gem. Fantastic service and food. Always friendly.
Excellent find and great surprise. Food was exceptional. Service was very friendly and genuine.
Small place with amazing food. Great mussles, pizza and pasta. Everything we ordered was delicious. Pascual is a great server and fun. Met the chef who is fantastic.
Waiter was very rude.
Owner was very nice
And the mussels were amazing and fresh
Unfortunately I was not overly impressed. The staff seemed more interested in talking with the people at the bar. We had to wave the waiter down to order and to pay the bill. There are only seven tables of which only one other was filled at the time we arrived. One of the reasons we picked this restaurant was to have beignets for dessert. When we ordered he came back and said we do not have beignets. No apology. No nothing. We were there for two hours and we all only ordered an entree. I understand the French people's passion for long meals but we are not in Paris. Food was okay. Not exceptional. Not good enough to want to linger for two hours. The place seemed to have an attitude. Maybe they only like French people. It is too bad. It has potential but the arrogance was off putting.
Great little place on Chestnut St. menu is very creative with a number of interesting dishes. chef also provides beautiful presentation with every dish. We shared a goat cheese salad that was outstanding. My wife had a special of tiger prawns in a liqueur around a large polenta cake. Delicious dish although it was pricy. I had their lasagne which was very good. For desert we split their apple tart with caramel and crime fraiche. Good dessert overall. I would come here again.
We recommended this restaurant to acquaintances who wanted to treat us to dinner because we know the food is great. We have been dining at restaurants owned by these gentlemen for over ten years. I did not know that the people we were meeting had lived in France and were delighted to use a little of the language they'd learned there.
Catch of the Day swordfish outstanding. Move over Cajun joints, this how beignets done. Service attentive.
We've gone to Castagna to celebrate a birthday and an anniversary, and it doesn't disappoint. The food is amazing!! You can't beat their pasta dishes. I highly recommend this restaurant.
Wonderful brunch on a rainy Sunday! A+ on the baked eggs. French toast was amazing. Caramelized FT means with caramel sauce. Instead of syrup, it was awesome!
Highly recommend for a bistro brunch experience. Small but charming with outdoor seating as well. Reservations are a must.
All the staff were fabulous. Food EXCELLENT, authentic french. Great cook, Stefan
Excellent food and wine list. Tiny place for a romantic dinner
Not really authentic and quality we use to get in s good French restaurant
What a cute, cozy place! The chef was very personable and was so kind to check in on us. Our server was also very helpful. I will definitely be back for the wonderful atmosphere and to try more of the menu!
Excellent! Cozy yet chic, with a European vibe. Definitely recommend.
The service is outstanding. Very friendly and attentive.
Every meal we had dinner or breakfast was of high quality, cooked to perfection with the freshest ingredients and presented in a very pleasing way with a special touch to make us feel very special.
We will come back!
Nice little Neighborhood restaurant with great food & really good service.
Personally, I like the Lasagna but have tried most of the menu all tasty and good quality food.
Go & enjoy!
this might be the best restaurant in SF serving french/ french-italian cuisine. the dishes on the menu are all inventive, the beef stew, salmon fillet and the chickpea crepes were all fantastic and very well prepared. Chef Stefan is not only an amazing chef but he is also a very nice and approachable person. It is very clear he is passionate about his art and it shows not only in the high quality menu but also his friendly interactions with diners. Overall highly recommend this restaurant and I'll be back here soon, its now my go to spot in Marina/ Cow Hollow!
As always LOVE going to Castagna. The food is consistently good and excellent value for money, and Pasqual always make me feel so welcome and part of the family. Recently tried the honey bacon side order - OMG! The mussels were delicious as was the croque monsieur. Everything I've ever had there was yum and the desserts are authentic, rich and yet 'light' at the same time. Could eat just desserts and come away happy.
My wife and I had the profound pleasure to experience Castagna for dinner on our 27th anniversary....we were treated royally, drank fabulous wine and champagne, ate wonderful food and topped it off with wonderful dessert and white port . Could not have been better...can't wait to come back to SF and dine here again...
I am so glad I stumbled on this gem. I will claim this was one of the best 5 meals I have had in the past 5 years.
Everything was fine until there was a VERY loud fight in the kitchen. We , along with several other diners, left as quickly as we could. It became a most uncomfortable experience,
A fight broke out in the kitchen involving the cook, the host, and a waiter. Blows were thrown, blood was shed, cursing, and loud screams of "au secours!" (French for "help!") were made by one of the men who was being kicked while he was on the ground in the back. Our table had a clear view of this. One waiter came out to serve tables with blood on his white shirt, which he later changed out of into a purple shirt. The cook had was bleeding from his forehead and the third man had to have his hand bandaged. Customers left, and we declined dessert...I've never seen anything like this. The food was tasty, the socca a little different from what I've had in Nice, otherwise.
Castagna is a wonderful restaurant on Chestnut (@Filmore). We enjoyed lovely service, incredible food, and French flare from Jerome et Stephane!
Excellent service and food. My 5 year old boy loved veal meatballs and kids cheese pizza. The whole family had a great time.
One of our favorites - Jerome and Stephan are amazing!
Castagna is very welcoming, very French, friendly and active. The food is good, not spectacular but good, very good mussels and frites, very good pasta dishes. Not spectacular but satisfying.
This is an intimate and exquisite dining experience. Most memorable dining experience! We plan to return.
The service is excellent, friendly, and everyone makes you feel very special. The food is delicious and very nicely presented. The warm goat cheese salad was outstanding and the filet Steak au Poivre was so tender and cooked to perfection!
The lovely French atmosphere and everything else makes it always a very special night. La Castagna is a must every time I come to S.F.
