Great and unique fixed menus with seasonal ingredients
Excellent service and exceptional food. The wine pairing was unusual and interesting.
Based on an informed voice, we both flew in from out of town to try out Castagna. Given the extra effort to get here, our expectations were very high. Thrilled to report that we had an absolutely blissful gastronomic experience here. After two decades of fine dining around the world, it is really tough to surprise me. But I was surprised in the best sense at least 3 times over 6 snacks plus 9 courses. Chef Woodward is a master of jus and gelee. The geleed citrine wedge 6th snack was both palette cleansing as well as a flavor bomb. The blueberry gelee dome over foie gras paired with huckleberry muffin was another standout. The halibut looked absolutely pearlescent and was world class tender. The final dessert course featured these ultra-thin meringue balloons that were divine!! Service was outstanding from our infinitely elegant and friendly waitress. Minor quip. I know the restaurant is striving for a modern vibe, but I thought the choice of music a bit uptempo for the overall refined experience.
Our bill for three of us including one cocktail and one wine flight and the chef's tasting menu was $722. Just so you are prepared. Now let me say that it was one of the best meals of my entire life, one of the other top three being the last time we visited Castagna. WORTH IT.
We were at this restaurant some years ago and for our surprise was way below our espectations and mainly they served us carbohydrates and poor quality wines.
Perfect in every way!
Exemplary service, great ambiance, delectable and unique dishes. Come here if you're looking for a fine dining experience and appreciate quality over quantity.
The Chef’s Tasting Menu is definitely the way to go. Very creative use of ingredients, with the beet & beef tartare, the crab small bite dish, the steak, the squid, and the duck as particular standouts. Also the desserts were delightful
Incredible meal, if you're in Portland this is a must visit for a high end meal!
My husband and I celebrated my birthday at Castagna at end of August. I picked this place because I had a very good experience here with a friend a couple of years ago. Unfortunately, we were not very impressed this time. Most dishes were a bit dull and not very memorable. The worst part was the beef was so chewy that almost not edible for both of us. We raised the issue but the staff only said "sorry, we'll let kitchen know." For a $400 dinner, we don't feel this is an acceptable response. Portland has so many other fine dining places that offer more interesting dishes with better quality and warmer service, AND often at a cheaper price. I don't think we'll ever visit Castagna again.
We love Castagna for all our super-special occasions. The wait staff is warm and informative, the setting is lovely, and the food is gorgeous in taste and appearance. In today’s realm of fast dining, slowing down to linger over the chef’s tasting menu was a perfect way to take a breath and enjoy our together time. The only reason I didn’t give it five stars across the board was because another party brought their 5-year-old, who was running around quite a bit. The restaurant can’t do anything about that, but it was frustrating.
The food was excellent but very expensive. We did enjoy the experience.
We celebrated our 10th Wedding Anniversary here. Castagna is a significantly special place for us. We have shared some amazing memories, moments together and with special friends in this exceptional place. I recommend this restaurant to everyone I know. It is an investment. It is to be shared, experienced and enjoyed. Dining here is consistently an amazingly artful and delicious dining endeavor. Chef Justin Woodward and his staff create art. When you think about art; the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power... and then to be eaten... I can hardly put into words the deep flavor profiles of each specially designed dish. It has to be experienced to know just how incredible it is. I highly recommend spending the money AND the time to experience one of the most amazing expressions of food we have been fortunate to taste.
Outstanding, innovative cuisine, beautiful wine list, great service. What more could you ask for? Quality comes at a price however, be forewarned!
No bread except as his neck in the chef’s menu. In a good restaurant you can I have bread and good bread On the main courses, duck and beef, balsamic vinegar was a flavor dominant. I agree the innovative cuisine but it must have the original flavour as dominant not sauces or other dominant. The seating was very uncomfortable
Awesome the desert potato skin but the first one with strawberry and ice cream was not worth. So, for this reason, the value was not the best
Amazingly crafted and creative dishes. Definitely go for the wine pairing. A great dining experience.
I've eaten at Le Bernardin, Per Se, and French Laundry and Castagna is up there. The food is fantastic and service is very, very good. The wine pairing is spot on. A definite recommend to any foodie who is up here in the Pacific Northwest.
I would recommend Castagna but with reservations. It is over-the-top expensive with only tasting menus available. Yes, it is a beautiful, exquisite meal, but outrageously expensive. I'm not sure it is worth the price, but it is an incredible meal. I remember when Castagna was a special place with wonderful food, but not outrageous. We were regular diners once, but now it is a very, very special meal for a very, very special occasion only. Sad. I miss the old place -- relaxed and superior meal with wonderful wines at a fair price.
I have tried most of the restaurants in Portland and this is without a doubt the best in food ingredients and quality of what is on the plate. The variety of flavors and quality of the preparation are amazing.
Amazing. We’ve dined around the globe. This was fantastic. Tasting menu with wine pairing is a must do!!
Great experience at Castagna for my birthday dinner. We did the special seasonal tasting menu (Green) and it was fantastic! The wine pairing was perfect as well, with the exception of the brandy at the end (I'm not a fan).
We had the exploration menu and it exceeded the expectations of everyone at the table. Delicious flavors, a feast for the eyes and mouth, and generous servings for a tasting menu. Worth much more than the $75/pp
This was an amazing dinner experience and a special treat for our 18th wedding Aniversary. There were so many unusual and delicious flavors with many creative dishes. Our thanks to the Chief and staff for the three hour tasting experience and the beautiful presentations.
Now that there is no option but the huge Chef’s tasting menu on weekends, there is far too much food and is certainly not suited for a “doggy bag,” so you either overeat to the point of sickness or miss the full balanced menu experience. This problem causes the value to be out of proportion to the very high price. Please bring back the 7 course menu!
Family diner for special occasion. Great venue and diner. Fine dining at its best!!
This was definitely one of the best dining experiences ever!
Loved the food pairings. So creative! Excellent dinner; highly recommended to any foodie in PDX.
We loved our meal at Castagna! The food was beautifully presented, delicious, and the service was well orchestrated so that as soon as we finished one dish...they brought the next for us to enjoy. We did not feel rushed and with all of the food in the chef's tasting menu...we were quite full by the end of the meal. My husband has a hearing loss and the restaurant was quiet enough so that we could communicate without any problems. We would highly recommend this restaurant for a lovely dining experience.
This is my second visit to Castagna and my family and I were not disappointed. This visit was for my wife’s birthday but I wish I could go there every week. However, special occasions will have to do.
This was such an amazing experience, one we will never forget. The food was both beautiful and delicious, and the service and ambiance were superb.
This experience was great! For many of us this was a first taste of a fine dining experience. The staff was very friendly. The pace was spot on, did not feel rush or seem like it dragged on. Suprisingly I thought I would still be hungry but I left feeling quite full and content. We had a great time and i would reccomend coming to this restaurant.
My husband and I have wanted to try Castagna because they’re highly rated for their food. We booked a reservation for our anniversary and were informed it would be a tasting menu. When we arrived at the restaurant, we saw the price of $165, which we assumed would be for two people and continued with the experimental epicurean experience. When we got the bill we were shocked! Not only was the cost per person, they charged an automatic 20% gratuity/service. We were kicking ourselves that we didn’t ask more questions, because it wasn’t explained by their staff at time of booking. Although the tasting choices were a clever experimentation, it wasn’t worth the price. I’d love to try their regular menu but it will be some time before we’re back.
Castagna is one of the best fine dining experiences in the PNW, Chef Woodward has been nominated for best chef (PNW) by the James Beard foundation for 5 consecutive years, and with good reason.
A dinner at Castagna takes a minimum of 3 hours and consists of about 15 courses, I’ve been two times and probably will go again soon.
Quite expensive but worth it!! Small bites, perfectly timed, an amazing variety of food exquisitely presented by very knowledgeable staff. I am lactose sensitive but they were able to do substitutions when necessary. We had the restaurant to ourselves for the first hour. Only a few other people came in after that so it felt very exclusive. Definitely a place to celebrate a special occasion.
We generally have the always wonderful tasting menu but Chef Woodward has introduced an Explorative Menu that brought fewer courses but the same consistently adventurous and seasonally in-tune dining we've come to love about Castagna. We were happy to have another splendid and memorable dining experience. Cocktails and wine were great, too!
My hubby and I thought we’d treat ourselves to a dining experience. Castagna did not disappoint! The service, the presentation and overall quality of food was impeccable!
Wine pairing outstanding as well. Please stay in business as you are a neighbor/PDX GEM!
The Explorative dinner was disappointing. The selection of various courses seemed mismatched, and with a couple with too much salt, and one too much fat.
Better to select their regular menu.
What an amazing find! Everything was a delight. You have two choices, a seven course or a five course. Then there are the tiny tastings in between! From the presentation, to taste to texture, all were surprises to the palette. It was the first time I have had an oyster, it was delicate, perfectly seasoned and tender. The squid and apple dish was also a perfect pairing. We splurged for a fois gras addition which was served with a huckleberry muffin - tasty! Even the desserts were amazing (yes, there was more than one!) We left stated but not overstuffed.
Our favorite for special dinners. Tasting menu is the best in Portland equal to New York - very creative visually as well as for flavor and unexpected.
Underwhelmed. We were excited to partake in the Chef's Tasting Menu at Castagna's. After all, they were just nominated for a James Beard award. In a tasting menu style of service one should expect the acme of the Chef's expertise - a showcase of inventiveness and skill; an adventure for one's tastebuds. One be oohing and ahhing. We were not. About 75% of the courses were OK to Very Good. 25% were Meh with a misstep or two (raw squab). Flavor combinations were neither assertive nor particularly inventive. Our dinner for 4 cost just under $1000. Absolutely not worth the price.
