Due to the increase in COVID-19 restrictions, Casa Romero will be temporarily closed January/4/2021 thru February/9/2021. We look forward to seeing you again very soon. Thank you very much for your support during this difficult time.

After 40 years, my customers still tell me what a delightful discovery it is to step out of a Boston alley and into the heart of Mexico. That is exactly what I had envisioned when I decorated the coffered door and walls of my restaurant with the bright Talavera tiles from Puebla, Mexico. Casa Romero is located in the midst of glamorous Back Bay at 30 Gloucester and offers the best traditional Mexican food in Boston.

The decoration is nice and the service was good. The staff is quite friendly and I loved that they spoke to my partner and I in [fluent] Spanish. The food was good. As a native Mexican, I would say that the meals are fairly tasteful for U.S. standards, but there are better options for Mexican cuisine in Boston.

The ambience does resemble that of a restaurant in central Mexico, which was nice because we decided to come here to commemorate Mexico's Independence Day.

Overall, it's a good option if you're in Back Bay.

I have been going to Casa Romero since the restaurant opened. it's a true gem. They have had to cut back the menu a bit because of staffing challenges, but I hope the full menu will return soon.

We were there at 5pm and ate outside so it was quiet and not too many people - maybe because it was a Monday evening. The margaritas were terrific, but the food was not as good as usual. They were not able to be flexible and change a small item on the menu, which is unusual for this restaurant.

The food is so bad; bland and tasteless. Aside from being gross, the sizes are small for the prices.

Delicious hidden gem. Service was outstanding and food really hit the spot if you’re in the mood for really good Mexican. Looking forward to dining there again soon!

I first went to Casa Romero in the 70s and I was amazed it was still here! The food and service were very good and our waiter was very accommodating. I enjoyed it and would definitely go back, except that the noise level is so high it was hard for me to hear my friend.

This is a 40+ year establishment that is CONSISTENTLY excellent. From the servers to the food to the ambience. It’s Boston’s original Mexican restaurant, and in my opinion, still out in front of the others, many of which are also good - but Casa Romaro is special. You’ll see what I mean.

Disappointing. The food quality was acceptable, but far from great. Kind of like "The Olive Garden" for Mexican food. Mixed drinks tasted underpoured or watered. Food quality was filling, at best. Service was playing hide-and seek with dinner guests. The place was crowded and loud by 7 p.m. so it's popular with some. Unfortunately, this popularity is a gamble that didn't pay off for us.

Food was just okay. My friends had the shrimp fajitas and were happy with them. My veggie enchiladas were just okay and only came with beans, no rice. Tables were super tight and made us a little anxious about being too close to other diners. The alleyway leading to the restaurant is a real turnoff. Trash is piled up everywhere and seems like an invitation to rats. We almost went somewhere else because of it. I do realize this may be because it was a Sunday but it’s still a turnoff. I didn’t like the way payments were handled either. The waiter comes over with the credit card machine and you’re not given the option to view the bill or get a receipt. I don’t think we’d go here again with so many awesome choices nearby.

Overall, a very good meal. Service was a bit slow at times. The ghost mango margarita lacked any real heat for what I expected. Food was okay. The guacamole was pretty tasty. The carne asada was average. Mole sauce was pretty decent. Cochinita pibil was excellent!

I love Casa Romero. Within seconds of sitting (ok maybe not seconds) we had chips and drinks to enjoy while we looked at the menu. The carne asada was maybe the I’ve had in the life. Plus, it’s super romantic.

Food was excellent. There were three in our party and we each had a different kind of Taco. All excellent.

Waiter offered to bring 'salsa, chips and guac' to the table as we were being seated. Usually that kind of offer is on-the-house but it was charged $13.50. Was very tasty and a substantial portion but it should have been clear that it was to be a purchased item.

The menu at the restaurant doesn't match the Open Table menu so that's a little confusing.

For dessert we shared a tres leches cake which I'd highly recommend.

The noise level in the dining room was a bit high for my taste and some of that was the music that could have been turned down a bit.

All in all it was a very nice evening out. Food was absolutely the best. My second time there and will definitely be back.

The dinner was excellent and was great value. The only problem was that the appetizers did not come until a table seated behind us which had arrived after us had finished their meal and we’re ready to leave. The hostess could not have been more pleasant and more supportive of us.

Had our first date at Casa Romero 19 years ago. We go back every few years, but had heard that the quality had declined. I'm happy to report that it was excellent. Will return again in the future. Glad they survived the pandemic.

I really liked the location and interior of Casa Romero but the food was not very good. I got chicken flautas and the chicken was extremely dry and not very flavorful. It also didn't come with any salsa, sour cream, or guacamole to dip in which I've never experienced with flautas before. My husband got steak tacos and the steak was very poor quality, overcooked, and also not very flavorful. The sangria tasted more like juice than wine or any other alcohol.

What a fabulous restaurant! When I lived in Boston 30 years ago it was a favorite of mine. So thrilled to see it is still open and just as fabulous as it was then! Love this restaurant. The best Mexican food ever, fantastic ambiance and friendly staff - a perfect experience! Thank you Casa Romero!

First time back since the pandemic started, and I was pleasantly surprised that everything was as good as usual. The music was a little louder than I remember, and I’d recommend that they dial it down a notch.
