Casa Orinda Ratings and Reviews
I have been going to this restaurant for years. Have liked the food - good basic food, prime rib always a hit. This time the service was horrible. Had to flag down someone for water, and when it was dessert time, had to ask for the menu from the bus staff as our waiter was not on top of it. When we were ready to order dessert, we had to ask another waiter. Disappointed that the waiter never checked back to see how the meal was, what we needed etc.
We could not have been more disappointed. We had a very small table in a room filled with large parties, the noise level was to much. It was clear from the beginning that they wanted a quick turnaround. Coffee and dessert were not offered. The ambiance of the restaurant needs to be updated. The decor is perfect for a BBQ restaurant, way to rustic. They cater mostly to well known customers, newcomers are not appreciated.
As always our dinner at Casa Orinda was fabulous. Out of 8 diners, 6 had the famous fried chicken, which of course was great. The service was pleasant and efficient. For this occasion, we celebrated a birthday and they brought out a piece of the wonderful lemon pie. This is one of our favorite restaurants and we will be back again soon.
We were lucky enough to get Gino as our waiter for the second time in a row. He was just outstanding. He was so attentive and perfect, that I was compelled to tell the hostess that on our way out. The bus person we had was not as attentive, but Gino noticed and kept making sure we got what we needed. I really can't say enough positive things about him. It's people like him that make you want to return to an establishment. It makes the dining experience so much better. And the food was good too. :) Also, loved being seated by the fireplace as it was a cold night. Totally recommend that!
We went following a performance at the SF Opera. Sat in the main room with the fireplace in a large banquette. Room was comfortable and festive with Christmas lights and greenery. Really good beet salad, wonderful halibut and chicken cutlet. Cocktails were good and service was friendly and attentive. All in all a very nice experience.
Casa Orinda was recommended as a longtime neighborhood dining spot. Our server, Nicole was fantastic and friendly. The Western and Italian food menu was extensive and affordable. The Entrees were generous. The downside, I ordered eggplant parma, which was rather heavy and I only ate half. The veal parma was mediocre according to my husband. We selected nicer wines by the glass, which were actually pricey because of a scrimping pour. We drove an hour to dine with family so we won't be back. We dined early evening on a Wednesday and it was noisy, but there's multiple rooms. The valet parking is great. It's worth a try for locals, suggest going hungry and order the famous Fried Chicken, which we missed.
We had heard about it from several people and wanted to give it a try. We happened to be out in Lafayette that night so it was a perfect moment to have dinner there. We both loved it. Very friendly service, had a great table, food was delicious in an old school way that we both love. Big portions & serious comfort food. Nice bottle of wine at a reasonable price. Though we live in Berkeley we will absolutely go again. Worth the drive. Great old west atmosphere. Fun, comfortable & unpretentious.
It was an interesting place. The decor/tableware appeared to be western themed but the food is mostly Italian of sorts. The food was not good but the service was great! While an interesting place to go back into time, not enough to time travel twice. However may be an interesting place for the curious...
For the first time since I have been going to Casa Orinda, the meal was a major disappointment. I admit I am a sucker for their fried chicken and usually it’s great but this night the crust, the second most important thing, was wildly overdone almost black. How the expediter let this go is beyond me. The meat was of course dry. Mine was one of two that were both the same. We were both too tired to complain but as we walked out looked at each other and said “that was terrible “. I realize we should have sent it back, but there were six of us and it was Friday night. My advice, don’t go on Friday
Kind of a neat ambience -- Early California, with branding irons, and historic paintings, and other bric-a-brac. But the food really needs to get better. Steak was good. Vegetables were steamed and boring. Seafood stew included fresh and good quality seafood, but in a broth that was uninspired. And the chefs apparently don't know how to clean squid; they left some entrails in the body. The onion rings look great, but they are bland and uninteresting. It shouldn't take that much to bring the food up a notch.
I went with my boyfriend and took another couple. As young adults, we were the youngest people in the restaurant which caused the other patrons to stare a bit. However, the staff was so professional. We ordered a great bottle of wine for the table. We ate a good cross section of the food and were pleased. Overall a lovely experience. I will be back.
We chose Casa Orinda as a place to meet our daughter's boyfriend for the first time. The service and food were outstanding. I get their signature fried chicken whenever I can - it was even still crispy and excellent the next day, lightly heated in the microwave (the serving was huge, made two-plus meals for me), the biscuits were light and fluffy and the mashed potatoes' texture was perfect and flavor delightful. My only complaint is the noise level, which made it hard to hear what this nice young man was saying!
This is one of those restaurants which has been around forever, one you always hearing about and finally decide... it's time to check it out. Suffice it to say, we all went in with low expectations. Well, this place was a absolute surprise!
The space is definitely authentic - dark wood paneling, hushed conversations with a lowly-lit throwback kind of vibe of maybe circa 1950's. The gun displays on the walls kinda gave the place a little extra charm as well.
Service wise - hostess and waiter were both very friendly and courteous. The three of us were quickly seated in a cozy booth next to the fireplace with the head of Bullwinkle above looking on.
Drinks wise - we all had the $5 margaritas which was well balanced. The bartender wasn't shy on the tequila.
Food wise - We all shared a first course of fried zucchini with a beet salad dish which were all very good. The zucchini was moist with a light, but slightly crunchy batter. The beet salad was delicious and not over dressed. Of course, we had to try the fried chicken which was surprisingly moist on the inside, nicely seasoned with a perfect brown crust coating on the outside. Essentially, you get half the chicken. It came with a side of fresh tasting biscuits, decent tasting mashed potatoes and gravy. The side vegetables were even prepared aldente! We also ordered the Chile Relleno which had a unusual filling of minced chicken, potato and carrot - with very little cheese, within an enormous green chile.
Overall, interesting ambience, great service with very good food for such an old establishment. Our expectations were surprisingly shattered.
If you're a bit tired of going to all those trendy foodie restaurants around the Bay Area and hanker for a little comfort food, this place is just the diversion.
Table service was exceptionally slow and un-attentive. It was a busy Friday night but even so, we were left languishing long after finishing our meal and decided to just skip dessert for fear that we would be left unattended for another hour.
Food was just okay. Nothing special. They are trading off their past glory and nostalgia. If you want to go anyway, try a weeknight.
I was taking good friend out to dinner for his birthday. Had seen a review on Check Please for fried chicken, so decided to go there. We both had the chicken with a mac and cheese appetizer. Was not disappointed. Was served half a chicken, veggies, mashed potatoes with gravy on the side and a huge biscuit with Steve Bee's honey. Meal was so huge should have skipped the appetizer even thou it was very good. Our waitress Erica was excellent. Always checking on us and food served hot. Made sure the manager knew how pleased we were with her service. We are already planning on a dinner there with the family at Christmas!!
We always have a great time at Casa Orinda! And, this includes family dinner, romantic dinner for two, birthday dinner for 12 and fun friend + couples' dinners. The food is consistently good, and the wait staff are always friendly, attentive and fun! Take your kids, or your parents, or your friends: you'll enjoy yourself!
