Carson's American Bistro - Ann Arbor Ratings and Reviews
We have dinner here relatively often, and for special occasions due to the relatively quiet ambience -good for conversation- and the dependably good food. This time was the first for Sunday brunch. We arrived right at opening. The service was spotty - coffee delayed on refills, etc, and waitstaff needlessly interrupting conversation and then disappearing for a long time when service was actually needed.
The food itself was good - the Eggs Benedict and omelets were excellent, and the coffee good.
The biggest problem was the brunch menu seemed unnecessarily limited. For example, it was surprising that the only bread available was the same yummy cheese-bread as served with dinner. In particular, one of us wanted eggs and pancakes, but the only way to do this was to get one of the full-size egg dishes and add the pancakes as a side order, making a very pricey, and more seriously, an oversized breakfast meal. However, for some of the dishes you could order the eggs cooked any style, so the kitchen was apparently ready to make e.g. fried eggs. Why not have a brunch menu item of say two eggs and a side - for a price comparable to the other items?
I always enjoy my time at Carson's. This time was no different, although I rated them a bit lower because for some reason the kitchen (and maybe the bar) were VERY slow.... Our waitress was very good although also a bit slow to get to the table, but once she did, she was on point the rest of the evening.
I almost didn't try this place out because there was a long wait (3 hours) through Open Table to reserve on a Friday night. It was close to where I was staying, though, so I gave it a try. I ordered the prime rib, which was wonderful. It was cooked perfectly. Creme brûlée with fresh berries on top for dessert. The only reason I didn't give ambiance five stars is due to the lighting which was a little bright, but they were fixing a short, I guess. They did move me to another table, though, so it was nice. I would definitely recommend this place.
Warmly greeted. Started well. Main course came out too soon. Then forgotten about, while those around us were being served by other waiters. After a long wait, one dessert came out. The waiter forgot to place the order for the second dessert. The dinner was in celebration of our 45th wedding anniversary. Frustrating experience.
We were there for a business lunch with a special purpose: A thank you for good project work by an intern whose contract was up and she was moving on to other things. Carson's is always our restaurant choice when we want somewhere relaxing, with great food to go to!
Overall Carson's was good, but unfortunately not as good as I thought reading the reviews. The service was attentive and friendly, but we felt the food was just okay. I has the ribs and found them to be over cooked and a bit dry. My wife had the French dip and didn't rave about it. I had read some pretty good reviews on Yelp prior to making the reservation, so maybe we just didn't catch them at their best?
We were pleased that the greeter at Carson's had our reservation request for a quiet table, and he did his best in an overall noisy restaurant to find relatively quiet seating in the bar area -- at least we were not seated near crying children. In addition, we were seated almost immediately with very little wait on a weekday evening.
Items on the dinner menu are expensive. The presentation is very good, but the food quality was good to mediocre. The fish was a bit overcooked and smelled fishy, which should not be the case with a truly fresh catch. The ribeye steak contained more grissel and fat than I would have liked, but the lean portions were cooked properly to order and the sauce was good. The shoestring potatoes were too salty. Vegetable choices are few, but the dinner salads are large with a good variety of greens and tomatoes. The fried calamari was an excellent appetizer adequate for two. We were not offered breads or dinner rolls, but we are cutting back on carbs and did not miss them.
Wine selections were limited but included some solid serviceable labels at reasonable prices.
The creme brulee was excellent. Unfortunately, espresso was not available and the coffee was sub-par.
Service was excellent -- appropriately attentive without overbearing friendliness.
Parking is adjacent to the restaurant and ample. Carson's is a popular place and reservations are recommended. It is the best of its kind in our neighborhood, and we will definitely come again.
Easy getting a reservation for 6 on a Friday night. Service was good. Ate here once before and entrees were a mixed bag. This time most got the bison burger and everyone who ordered it liked it. I got the perch blackened. I didn't know it was going to be so spicy so I couldn't eat much of it and there were a lot of either scales or bones still in there. We got 2 orders of the cookie sundae which was really good. Unfortunately one person got ill later in the night after having the chicken and waffles. If it weren't for that, I'd rate the experience higher.
My husband had the prime rib. Said it was the best he has had in a long time. Great flavor and not a lot of fat!
I had salmon, it was good, maybe a touch over done. Green beans were really good. They had a touch of sweetness to them!
Great meal overall!
Will definitely go back!
We were meeting for a business lunch. I was pleased with how they handled our last minute request to be seated outside on the patio, which was lovely. The host was very friendly and accommodating. The food is consistently good, which is one reason we come back repeatedly, even though it is not inexpensive. I would rate it 4.5, but that is not an option. The service is also consistently good.
This was our first visit to Carson's - we were given a gift card and decided to try it out on our anniversary. Salads and bread before dinner were just okay. Ordered Prime Rib, which was really good. Had the cheesecake for dessert which was also excellent. We will be back again.
Took quite a long time to receive our food and restaurant was not busy. My friend and I had the prime rib sandwich - it was not good at all. No flavor in the meat or the au juis. Husband's had chicken sandwich and fish and chips. They enjoyed their food. Waiter kept interrupting to clear table. First it was the plates and then the silverware. Sort of annoying. I would not recommend due to the fact that there are way too many other restaurants to choose from.
Bob provided great service!! The house Caesar salad is outstanding. I asked for plenty of cheese and got it! The bean chili soup was said to be excellent by one of our group. Everyone enjoyed their meals a great deal. There were so many great options the only challenge what choosing. There are plenty of menu options!! We will go again. For a group of up to 7-8, I'd love it if there was a round table...it's hard to talk to everyone for a group outing. Otherwise, great place to eat!! Thank you!
This was only our 3rd visit & each time is not like the first experience. The first time was excellent. Second time for a Valentines Special in which we experienced all kinds of issues. This last visit was for Fathers Day. It was not very busy around 1pm. I was looking forward to trying the brunch menu, but when my egg dish arrived, it was cold. We had to track down our server for a second cup of coffee. Very disappointing, especially since I picked the restaurant hoping for a nice meal with my dad. I should have taken to heart the mediocre reviews I read before booking my reservation.
Service was excellent & there were many choices on the menu. My husband took advantage of Restaurant Week & loved all 3 courses. I had a wonderful house salad & the shrimp and grits which, although tasty, I would have preferred with a more Cajun-like gravy. Will definitely come back.
Everyone in our group found something on the menu which pleased him/her. The server/chef were willing to accommodate special requests. Food was fresh and nicely prepared. The server was very friendly and curteous as well as attentive. Desserts were prepared in house. This is a very reliable choice for American food.
