My wife and I have been going to this elegant restaurant at least once every time we are in town for many years and it has remained a superb place for an upscale dining experience. Great food artfully presented with very good service. Good wine list. Lots of free self-parking. Great place for a romantic dinner. Highly recommended.
I am a PSU alumni and in town for a reunion with my wife who has never been to the area. We're pretty much foodies so I saw the reviews on this restaurant and hoped it would be as good as reported. And it sure was! The food and service were top notch - better than many restaurants we've been to in big cities. The dining room was small and cozy and the tables not on top of each other. The wine list was comprehensive with lots of options at multiple price points. My wife got the mushroom soup and scallops, I had the brie salad and halibut. All of it was delicious and well portioned.
So kudos to Carnegie House - a first class restaurant in a college town with too many casual options
Food was fabulous!!
Carnegie House is the finest of the few fine dining restaurants in the area. We enjoyed pre dinner cocktails by the fireplace where we placed our order. Our dinner and service was excellent. Two ladies enjoyed salmon, my friend scollops and I had the special veal tenderloin. All excellent with a nice value wine that the host helped to select. Highly recommend this special restaurant.
Lovely experience with outstanding food and service
Perfect venue for Anniversary dinner
Very nice restaurant. Good menu selections. Food and service were excellent. An all around relaxing, pleasant experience. A standout of restaurants in the Penn State area.
We had a great meal.
Drinks before the meal in a comfortable setting where we ordered dinner.
When we finished our drinks we moved to the dining room and commenced with
our meal. Very pleased with the food, service and the ambiance.
Prices are expensive but worth it.
The Carnegie House continues to be excellent all around. Enjoying a cocktail and hors dourves on the couch in the fireplace/library setting is wonderful. Great staff!
After an all-around excellent experience at the Carnegie House Restaurant this past Saturday night, I feel like an idiot for having never tried it before. We had a party of 5, including my wife and I, our 2 PSU students (of which it was a 20th bithday for one) and my older son's girlfriend. We would refer to the dinner as a very enjoyable experience from our initial seating in the Library where we enjoyed the fireplaces and lovely room with our beverages to our excellent dinner in the dining room. Everything was delicious and beautifully laid out on the plates when served. We all had different entrees: pork, short-ribs, rib-eye steak, salmon and sea bass and not a sliver on anyone's plate remained at the end of the meal. I would highly recommend the Carnegie House Restaurant, although it is probably a difficult reservation on busy weekends in State College, PA. Book well in advance.
Excellent food, best in State College. Very nice experience,
By far the best meal I've had in the area. From start to finish, everything was perfect. Definitely worth it, especially for a special occasion.
We had a lovely meal with our out of town guests. Yours is the only restaurant of this level in State College and it's always our first choice for a special dinner.
We've been here several times over the years & since the new chef arrived, the cuisine has greatly improved!
There is limited fine dining in State College and this fits the bill but needs a little amping up. It has a quaint dining room but the smell of fish was overwhelming. The crafted cocktails were ok nothing worth having again. The Short ribs were very good but not any better than I have made at home. The salmon was so overcooked and covered with way too much bland sauce. Desserts were very good though. Not bashfull on the price for not quite great fine dining. The service is was great to begin with but felt very rushed and the server lost all congenial attitude by dessert. We were the last table seated at 8 o'clock by 9 the server was ready for everyone to leave.
All was good; however the steak was tough - not what I expect from an expensive rib-eye steak. At the same time, my Wife's crabcakes were excellent. The ambiance was superb.
We took our granddaughter to celebrate her 20th birthday. She enjoyed the experience.
Anita was very attentive and gave excellent service.
This is always our "go to" place for special occasions. The service is excellent and the food is the best in town.
Always a pleasure to dine here. Excellent food and atmosphere. We have had the same waitress several times and hope we can always get her. She goes above and beyond, extremely pleasant and efficient!
Booked in advance for Valentine's Day and we were promptly greeted and escorted to our table. We were offered the option of having drinks in the library before seating at our table but we declined as we were well ready for dinner. The backlit menus made reading in the lowered light atmosphere a breeze and were a unexpected treat. Everything from the complimentary hors d'oeuvre to the appetizers and main courses plus dessert were prepared perfectly and presented with top level service. This was a special dinner night but the experience ensures that there will be future visits to come.
We think that this is the best restaurant in the State College area. Every meal is excellently prepared and beautifully presented. We had a rack of lamb that was one of the best I've ever tasted.
Great food; great service, xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
We loved our food and the restaurant was beautiful!
Nice overall, but sent back an overdone steak. Didn't have our first choice of wine. Quiet night.
The restaurant was very elegant and quiet. The staff made you feel like a VIP. We had a drink in the library before dinner and the waitress moved us to our table where we had a very delicious meal. The meal was elegantly arranged on the plate. The waitress was very attentive. The atmosphere was light and happy. I would recommend this restaurant to our friends, especially if it is a special occasion. We will dine here again.
Lovely atmosphere with delicious food.
Very nice evening and experience . Terrific lamb and very good service.
I had the Dover sole which was very good; my husband had the salmon which he said would have been better if it had a sauce or something on it as it seemed dry & needed 'something'.
Otherwise, the meal was delicious!
Delicious dinner, very good service and lovely evening. We enjoyed our night out and look forward to our return. Food was so delicious and server was so nice and very attentive. We met the chef for a moment and look forward to trying the chef's table. We did think the music was too low initially and other conversations were a little too prominent. But it seemed that the music got going after some point and this helped round out the noise.
Nice ambience, good food, relaxing dining experience
We would go back again. Only minor complaint was service was so attentive we were asked same thing by a couple of people as they did not communicate among themselves. Food was well prepared and tasty. I has the salmon, it was properly cooked and flavorful. My husband had the ravioli which was also prepared well and flavorful.
Wonderful dinner- great food and great atmosphere.
We enjoyed a very nice dinner with our daughter before taking her back to college for her spring semester. The ambiance was quiet and elegant, and the cuisine was well worth the price.
Our server was pleasant and attentive to our needs, and we never felt rushed during our dining experience.
Overall, we would recommend this restaurant for anyone looking for a fine dining experience.
We have dined many times before, with satisfactory results, at the Carnegie House Restaurant. We returned because we liked the quiet ambiance, good service, and "straightforward" cuisine based around locally acquired ingredients. Our most recent meals (on 12/27/17) were disappointing because of the mixing of too many tastes within single dishes. We ate the wild salmon topped with nuts and plated atop spiced butternut squash risotto and a champagne sauce. The fish was perfectly cooked, but its delicate flavor was entirely ruined by the incongruous topping of nuts and particularly by the distracting risotto. The spices of the risotto so conflicted with the taste of the fish and the quite nice sauce that the whole experience was like eating the contents of a dumpster at an expensive restaurant. We hope that the restaurant will go back to basics.
Top notch! Been there 4 times. Have never been disappointed. Outstanding!!
My husband and I recently went to Carnegie to elebrate my one year “cancerversary.” It is an incredible dining experience in State College. Chef Paul is wonderful and creative, making excellent choices of additions to classic meals. Our wine was also delicious. We enjoyed cocktails in the library before dinner and loved having a few moments to prepare ourselves for our romantic dinner. The service was absolutely perfect as was the entire meal. We were able to order from the new winter menu and the selections were hard to choose from! Everything looked amazing. I enjoyed spare ribs and my husband had a divine roast chicken. We each had a salad, too, and both were so tasty and unique. We started the night with a foie gras that was simply incredible. We can’t go to Carnegie often, but when we can afford it and have a reason to celebrate, this is our number one spot.
Carnegie House vastly improved with the new chef & cuisine.
Unique setting for a special dinner.
Never experienced a dinner like they provided.
Will return soon.
Fantastic meal. The staff were all very friendly and attentive. Love the light-up menus too!
One of the best out there! From the time you arrive, treated special. Escorted into the Library for a cocktail and given menus that the page lights up when opened. Food, drink, service are all extraordinary ! Highly recommend it! Even better when the weather allows you to sit outside!
The evening began in the library with cocktails and a delicious appetizer. It went downhill from there. Our server had no personality and we felt rushed to order. When we asked if our table was needed for another seating, we were told it wasn't so we didn't understand being rushed. The lamb shank was good, salmon and halibut just okay. A few examples of routine touches that were missing, we had to ask for an ice bucket to keep our bottle of white wine chilled and also had to ask for fresh ground pepper. Attention to detail was lacking as well. Our table candle was not lit and price stickers were on the poinsettias that served as the table centerpiece. I understand there is very little, if any, fine dining competition in the State College area but was hopeful the image the Carnegie House presents would match the experience. Unfortunately, I was disappointed.
