Carmine's, located in the heart of Ybor City in Tampa's Latin Quarter, specializes in Spanish cuisine. Stop by for lunch and try its pressed Tampa Cuban sandwich with yellow rice or other signature dishes like the Cuban marinated baked chicken or Cuban roast pork. Check out its dinner menu of oysters, fileted Gulf grouper, Angus beef, Italian sausage or homemade pastas and sauces.
It is full of history. Ybor City is one of only two of Florida's national historic landmark districts. Guests can enjoy a window view of 7th Avenue, which was recognized as one of the "10 Great Streets in America" by the American Planning Association. Its modern rustic décor makes it a hip place for hanging out with friends or romantic dates. Carmine's is available for private events in any of its various rooms.
On October 1, 2016, I and thirty of my distinguished guess had the worst experience of customer service and common courtesy at Carmine Restaurant in Ybor City located at 1802 E 7th Ave, Tampa, FL 33605. This was very surprising to me because I have been a frequent customer at this establishment with large parties of mixed race. I alerted the general manager of the issues and felt my concerns were disregard. Furthermore, upon my exit I was not thanked for my business and felt invisible to the staff and management.
Carmine's is well-known as one of the best restaurants in Ybor. The food - ranging from salads or cuban sandwiches, to crab pasta or shrimp piccata - is delicious, fresh, and unique to the Tampa area's culture. The server was attentive and even my somewhat picky parents were pleasantly surprised with the meal. The only (minor) downside was that it's not at all a quiet place to enjoy your meal, probably still one of the most chill places to eat in Ybor, so if you're looking for some outstanding food to start a night out in the area and aren't looking for a romantic candlelight ambiance, this is a great place to go. Also, my cocktails were perfect and less expensive than I was expecting.
We went there to try their cuban sandwich, which my husband ordered and loved, but I had a hankering for a meatball sandwich to go along with my malbec. The malbec was good, not the best, but the meatball sandwich was really good. Very well seasoned and extra dipping sauce. It was nice of the waitress to ask if I wanted cheese on it. My husband had the red velvet cheesecake, which was nice to see a smaller portion and I went for the sweet plantains, which were a little greasier than what I am used to, but nothing a little dabbing on a napkin won't hurt.
The menu is slightly confused. There is a blend of Spanish/Italian items and then American fare to appease the masses. Think if they stuck with one theme the menu would stand out a little more. Food was cooked well though and tasty, so you'd go more so to enjoy the cool atmosphere in Ybor while not worrying about getting mugged.
We book a Yelp reservation and we're seated ahead of time at a great table viewing the street with lots of folks enjoying Ybor City.
Matthew provided excellent service!
Devil Crabs and fantastic Cubans exceeded our expectations!! Just like our five previous visits!
The chicken parm is outstanding.
The Cuban bread was amazing!
2nd time back with our entire team, Excellent food, excellent seating, excellent location, waitress was wonderful, food took very long to arrive but honestly it's a great environment to be in so it didn't matter!
Made a reservation for 8 of us for 8 pm. They sat us at a high top table at the bar and our server was the bartender. So not only was he taking care of us, he also had everyone at the bar and was assisting all the other servers with their drink orders for their table. We finally got his attention. Ordered appetizers. We waited 40 minutes. I had to go to the manager to get things going. We finally got our entrees 90 minutes later after we first sat down. The grouper fish was good but very salty the steak malinase was over cooked and tasted horrible. The company we had was good, but the service and quality of food was the worst I've had in a long time. Would not recommend this place to anyone.
Great food and reasonably priced drinks made this our pick over the commercialized place down the street that is more well known. My pork chops were grilled perfectly with a delicious mojo topping. The black beans and yellow rice were delicious and the diced tomatoes, onions and scallions on top were the best. The tossed salad was good and not as salty as others. My kids all liked the Cuban sandwiches they ordered and the grouper bites were a good appetizer for the table. The deviled crab was too spicy for anyone but me, but that was ok because I polished it off easily. Unique preparation because the deviled crab was fried in a ball like a croquette instead of stuffed in a crab shell like I am accustomed to in the rest of Florida. Carmines was good for our party of 7 with three little kids because the server was very attentive. We will be back the next time we are in Tampa because it is just down the street from the IKEA.
This was some of the worst Cuban food I have had in years. This please has been in Ybor City for a generation and is known to be a landmark. The waitress was weak. The food was salty, tough and less than mediocre. They wanted to charge for Cuban bread...that was our cue to leave but our friends chose the place. Sorry to see a place like this go downhill. Go elsewhere...anywhere else.
Well I and my girlfriend decided to stay at Ybor City hotel before our weekend cruise. I decided to reserve a table at Carmines at 8:45 p.m.. When we arrived at 8:30 we were met by the hostess after 4 minutes of standing and we were informed that they were shutting down the kitchen and we had to sit at the bar. We left and was disappointed. Oh and let not to forget about all the homeless people begging for money as we were walking to our next Destination.
Tampa PD need to step it up! I did not feel safe at all. Don't recommend Ybor City!
Since 1947 Carmines has been. Local favorite .
Stopped in bar for one of their Classic cocktails before Dinner .
Salads we well chilled and fresh .
We had fresh grouper blackened and chicken Marsala - both we great , Fish was fresh .
Servers and staff were very attentive and friendly
A great traditional spot for a one on one informal business lunch. Don't be in a hurry though.
David was amazing and very attentive. . . I would definitely return
We had to send the steak back. The chef needs to learn how to gauge the temperature of the meat.
We went here for the first time on a Saturday night at 7:30pm as a group of 6 to celebrate a birthday. The atmosphere and food are really good, but the service was so soooooooooooo slow and lackadaisical even though the restaurant was only about half full.
We also asked about them putting the cake we brought in (as they started they do nothing to help celebrate birthdays) in the fridge while were having dinner, but they stated that if they did, they would have to charge us a $2/person plating charge even though we didn't want them to cut it; we just wanted it in the fridge! We just decided to keep it on the bar area behind our table instead.
We all agree that we could only see ourselves going back here if they make some major improvements to their service.
We like locally owned restaurants. Carmine's didn't cut it. My wife gets cold easily, I don't. We got so cold, we asked to be moved. Manager explained the a/c problem but didn't apologize & no improvement. Server worked hard but they were short one person all the work got dumped on her. The hostess was blind to how hard the server was working, stood still and just watched it all happen. The manager gave it a half hearted effort. It took over an hour to get our meal which was not worth the wait. Server admitted their salads were "very small" and my chicken was overcooked and dry. Bottom line: not well run and the food is not worth the hassle. I hope our server finds a better place to work that hard. Better places in Ybor to eat.
I chose to have my birthday here and I was not disappointed. Very good food, and great service.
It was my first time dining at Carmine's, and I had heard great reviews from many of my Tampa-raised coworkers, however what they described and what I experienced are polar opposites. I had heard great things about the Ropa Vieja, but when it came to my table is was somewhat cold, WAY too salty, and was sliced instead of the traditional pulled. It also was VERY fatty. It also took us quite a while to receive any of our food despite the restaurant being close to empty (we dined on a Tuesday evening). Overall I was very disappointed to see a "Tampa Classic" establishment turn to such an unimpressive restaurant.
Everything that was ordered in my art if 7 was either cold, undercooked or had no flavor. I would not recommend this place to anyone. The service was slow and it seemed the waiter didn't know what he was doing. We asked the hostess for a kids menu and she said they don't have physical menus, the waiters know it in their head. Really?? It was ridiculous!!
First our service was fantastic, second the food and the Expesso Martini was outragious . my next visit to Ybor City will include Carmines.
Service was VERY slow. Probably not go again. There were only 4 tables. Two big parties. One waitress had both large tables and was unable to give good service. Need to prioritize their staff. Food was Ok, small portions
I went her with my boyfriend because we had to meet friends nearby in Ybor. I had read some reviews saying the service was poor, and they were correct. Our server kept disappearing for lengths at a time. At one point, there was not one restaurant employee, including the hostess, anywhere to be found. I honestly wondered if they were having a staff meeting at 8pm on a Saturday night. It was bizarre and ruined the experience but the food was good enough. Nothing special. Also, bring a sweater. I was so painfully cold here (they have a multitude of fans blowing so you can't escape the cold air hitting you) I had to step outside a few times to warm up.
It was OK. Had the filet pasta. Steak was well done even though I ordered medium rare. Flavor was good.
Carmine's has been here for years but it never fails to provide an authentic taste of Ybor with a great view of 7th Ave!
Carmine's has been a dining tradition in my family for years. My mother knew Carmine when he was alive and his restaurant is one of our family's hot spots. Carmine's is always enjoyable and we love the service, food and ambiance. Thank you!
While it was Mother's Day, the restaurant was not anywhere close to full capacity, yet the service was very slow, the food average, and there was no sense of urgency. There appeared to be no recognition of the slow service, including the fact that the owner, Carmine himself, walked around kissing people without realizing the people with whom he interacted with had been waiting quite a while for their meals. This is not what I would expect from
My wife and I had a very good dinner at Carmines. I had Chicken Alfredo which was creamy, thick and the chicken was juicy. My wife had the Lasanga which she enjoyed as well. It was too sweet for my taste, almost like they used breakfast sausage. The space is unique and pleasant, the staff was very good.
If I have one complaint it's the cans Coke/Pepsi. If you want 1, 2 or 3 Coke's while you're there you'll need to buy 1,2, or 3 cans of Coke. But the meal was enough to over come the Coke issue.
My wife and I went for a night out without the kids. We met and host with an attitude the moment we walked in. Our server was very good and the ambience was quite nice. The food was very mediocre, a real disappointment. The wine glass was not completely clean. We are people that eat out frequently, this restaurant is not on our return list.
Crowded, noisy, slow service. Ambience was interesting, but not compelling. Food was satisfying, but not terrific.
It took 45 minutes to get a burger, and it was worse than a drive through burger. Not worth the fuss and wait time. certainly not going back.
I call it massacre, because Carmine's staff just killed it. It was by far the best resteraunt my wife and I have eaten at since we have been here. The food was really good and the staff was beyond compare. Thanks Carmine for the best Valentines day ever.
Great food, great service and wonderful atmosphere.
I've been coming to this place for over 20 years, picking someone up at the airport gave me an excuse to have my entire immediate family go there this particular night.
I always order grilled palomilla with onions are parsley, but my family each have their own favorites, steak milanesia, chicken parm, cuban sandwiches, spanish bean soup, gorganzola salad, and their roasted chicken dish is pretty good too, prepared sort of similar to some asado places in Spain.
They keep changing their decor, which is fine since I haven't seen the changes as negative, but I do miss the sidebar Zion that they used to have their, but that's been long gone.
As Ybor keeps changing, this place I hope is always there.
