About Carmine's - Washington DC
Carmine’s is a family style, value-driven restaurant concept with locations in NYC, NJ, Nassau Bahamas, and Washington DC. Restaurateur Artie Cutler created Carmine’s with one goal in mind: to open a restaurant that would serve every meal in the style of an Italian American wedding feast, featuring extra large portions of home-style antipasto, pastas, seafood and meat entrees served on extra large platters designed for sharing. Carmine’s is the perfect place to casually enjoy friends and family over great food and wine, with excellent service, the way it used to be at grandma’s house.

Carmine's - Washington DC Ratings and Reviews
We went for our office Christmas luncheon. Everyone was pleased with the food selections especially the Porterhouse w/ peppers and onions. We've been here a few times before and have always enjoyed this place. We were seated right away and the waiter was GREAT!
Although resturant empty host stand Personnel repeated asked if the entire party of 10 were present prior to seating us. Because of the late addition of two seats staff seemed put out by the change.
Server had language issues. Confirmed that the abriviation used on the menu "qt " was a quart of wine, but showed up with a carafe that was less than a pint.
Food was excellent. Service was prompt.
I visited here last year and actually had forgotten how rude the service was...until I went back and felt like I was put on “punishment” for being late for my reservation. Mind you, it was a Saturday afternoon - not very busy..but the hostess decided we’d wait for a table since we were late and while I accept responsibility for my tardiness, I didn’t appreciate her “in the penalty box you go” attitude. At any rate, we were seated after much ado about nothing...the food was terrific as always and our server made up for the disdain we received from the hostess.
I had a reservation I made weeks earlier. I walked up to the hostess who was entirely disinterested and unfriendly. She attempted to put our party of five in the worst room of the restaurant. Frankly I’d rather eat in my garage. I insisted they move us which after much discussion they did. The food is at best average and while portions are large this restaurant is best for large parties where quality is more important than quality.
Excellent southern Italian food! All food is family style. We split spaghetti and meatballs, and it was the best we’ve ever had. It cost about $35 for the spaghetti, which is very reasonable considering we had two big plates there and had enough left over for two big plates later. Service was great. The employees hustke and are extremely nice. With a reservation through Open Table, we had no wait. No complaints at all.
This is one of those eating establishments where the focus appears to be huge portion size versus innovative creative cuisine. We ordered 2 entree's for 5 adults and had substantial food left over.
You would recommend this restaurant to friends who are looking for a basic but not creative Italian meal. Unfortunately there are better Italian options.
We were excited to try this well known DC spot, but it was a big disappointment. Service was poor from the start. The hostess never made eye contact with me and never stopped applying her chapstick when we let her know we had a reservation. Our waiter only spoke limited English, and although very nice, was unable to answer our questions about the menu or communicate clearly with us. For example, a drink order of cranberry and club soda with lime came to our table as one large glass of cranberry, a second large glass of club soda, and a bowl of lemons. The veal parm was prepared well, but the other dishes were mediocre at best. No one got ill, but all 4 diners had indigestion after the meal. It was very expensive and not very good. We weren't even interested in the left overs. We tried to find a manager not to complain, but to ask the questions our waiter could not answer, and the staff we asked walked by us with no response. It's a beautiful restaurant, but this was a special occasion and we were let down by both food and service.
Had a group of 10 for an anniversary dinner and was perfect for the occasion. Made the Opentable reservation the day before. Perfect for a big group because of the family style dining, encourages lots of conversation. Will def be going back many more times.
While the family style atmosphere is fun for a larger group, this restaurant was just too much for a small group. Service was inconsistent. We received bread after we received our appetizers and it was just plain bread, none of the seasoned olive oil was included. Experienced was rushed with entrees arriving before appetizers were cleared. Overall, felt like the servers just wanted us out of there to get to a bigger party. Younger member of our party ordered an entree that cost over $100 and the server didn't even mention the cost (it was a special). Total check was $400 for 4 people, terrible value for the price paid. Won't be returning anytime soon.
We really like Carmine's and visit whenever we are in DC. The service is always impeccable and this visit was no exception. The gluten free pasta is very good, and you probably wouldn't know it wasn't wheat pasta.
The only knock is the $5.50 charge for a flavored lemonade, and no refills. I expect restaurants to make a lot of money on beverages, as markup is extreme. This felt like downright highway robbery.
When you want a pre-show dinner, or an event for your family or friends, choose Carmines! I love them, but they should have at least one more vegetarian option, because the Pomodoro is very boring and plain. the vodka sauce dish is great, but there should be at least one more veggie option. The rest is AMAZING!!
My family and I went to Carmine’s for their traditional Thanksgiving dinner. We’ve done so for several years and been satisfied, but this year was a disappointment. After we ordered, we were informed that the restaurant had run out of several (3) critical elements of the meal. We ended up ordering from the standard menu, which was alright, just a very different experience than what we had hoped.
Wonderful ambiance. Staff and servers were very friendly and professional. We were a party of ten with an infant for the Thanksgiving meal. There was plenty of food for all of us. The turkey was cooked to perfection, kids loved the buttery seasoned green beans and carrots. We didn't feel rushed, and although I usually have a hard time in busy and crowded places the aesthetics were very calming. Will definitely go back soon to try their Italian dishes.
My daughter and I went to Carmine's for Thanksgiving during our stay in Washington, D.C. We ordered calamari and shrimp scampi. The calamari was abundantly placed on a platter. The shrimp scampi had 13 or 14 extra large shrimp on a platter. Those items were flavorful.
We also had the cheesecake. The cheesecake's presentation was mouthwatering, but the taste was not what I desired. It had an over abundance of a spice that made it unappealing to me. At $15 for half of a cheesecake, I expected more, but did not get what I wanted.
Carmine's is a lively restaurant that accommodates duos to whole groups. The wait staff do a good job of trying to accommodate the many people and their needs (demands). The prices are not fast food prices, so make sure you review them before sitting at a table.
Although, the waiter provided great service, it took 25 minutes for staff to seat my family despite having a reservation. My family and I were shuffled around a few times to seats that were apparently reserved for another group or not suitable....while the food was average. I did not feel valued as a customer.
EXCELLENT AS ALWAYS! A FAVORITE SPOT WE COME TO EACH TIME IN TOWN VISITING OUR SON IN COLLEGE. HE ENJOYS THE GREAT MEAL AND GOOD FOOD THAT HE CRAVES SOOO MUCH BEING AWAY FROM HOME! ONLY RECOMMENDATION: TO ALLOW 1/2 ORDERS OF PASTA WHEN ONLY 1 PERSON CAN EAT THE PASTA AND THE OTHER CANT. (ITS JUST WAY TOO MUCH FOOD WHEN YOU ORDER 2 MEALS FOR 2 PEOPLE! (EVEN ONE HUNGRY COLLEGE KID!) :) SINCE HE CANT EAT PASTA. OTHERWISE, I WOULDNT CHANGE A THING! MY OUR FAVORITE PLACE TO EAT!
We arrived early and everyone was vey nice and let us know that we would have a little wait. We felt we were lucky because we were an hour early. We spoke with a few other families that were there. People seem to be happy, just as we were. Fun environment and the food was awesome, can't wait till we return in December.
This was my first time at this location- I’ve visited the New York locations many times. The restaurant did not disappoint! The food was great, the service was very good and it was consistent with the New York locations. Not a lot of restaurants can maintain the quality menu across locations but Carmine’s did! I highly recommend it.
Half size portions should be offered for appetizers, we ordered the $32 calamari, and didn't finish. Would have liked two options instead of just one. Also need a smaller family size option. You need a minimum of 6 people or you over pay and waste money and food.
My birthday is in July and I save my birthday dinner until the Fall so I can come to Carmine's-Italian food and July don't sit well with me. I'm not a fan of Italian restaurants, in general because I feel like they all taste like "bulk food" or a buffet except..Carmines! I love this place!
My husband took me here for my bday dinner. Boi may I say the food was delicious. We had the wings and lasagna. We couldn't get through the meal. This restaurant is family style menu. So if you and your date can agree on getting one entree it will be more than enough. Great for people with hardy appetite. They also have some really good drinks. My favorite was the White wine sangria. This place is a must have in the near future. My family and i will be returning.
This isn’t my first time at Carmine’s. Our server was subpar to say the least. He rarely visited our table. At food without drinks. My husband asked for parmesean cheese and it was never brought. I will say this, don’t order the Oil & Garlic sauce. There was no oil and all garlic. Gave everyone in our group stomach issues. If I wanted to eat garlic, I would’ve asked for it raw. Definitely ruined the dish. We loved the Meatball dish. Overall this was probably our worst meal here of at least 5 times eating at this restaurant.
We had a family reunion - 4 generations from ages 6 months to 78. We were seated in one of their semi private rooms which where very accommodating & and much more quiet. Warning: When the waiter tells you the servings are large, BELIEVE him or her! One dinner meal can easily serve 3-4 people. The food was delicious. I would not hesitate going there again or recommending it. Five star! Use OPEN DOOR app to make your reservation; we were taken right away and we were a little early. The lineups on Friday & Saturday night’s are insane. Thank you Carmine for a truly memorable experience 👍👏
