About Carmine's - Washington DC
Carmine’s is a family style, value-driven restaurant concept with locations in NYC, NJ, Nassau Bahamas, and Washington DC. Restaurateur Artie Cutler created Carmine’s with one goal in mind: to open a restaurant that would serve every meal in the style of an Italian American wedding feast, featuring extra large portions of home-style antipasto, pastas, seafood and meat entrees served on extra large platters designed for sharing. Carmine’s is the perfect place to casually enjoy friends and family over great food and wine, with excellent service, the way it used to be at grandma’s house.

Carmine's - Washington DC Ratings and Reviews
We loved every minute of it! From a drink at the bar, to dinner for two with way too much food but SO delicious. Highly recommend our meal: caesar salad, chicken scappipine, side of marinara. Could not stop eating until overstuffed. Great bread w dipping oil too. Can't wait to go back.
Went to Carmine’s while in DC with the kids. We wanted good food but a kid-friendly atmosphere. Carmine’s was perfect! We had the Carbonara (a special) and some garlic bread. That’s all our family of 4 needed. We had a ton of leftovers. It was delicious. I’m a foodie and no, it wasn’t the same as the Carbonara I get at my hometown high-end Italian eatery with locally sourced ingredients and handmade pasta - but it was better than any chain or run-of-the-mill Italian joint. The service was impeccable. The hostesses could use some work but the waitstaff made up for it. My 5 year-old spilled her fancy juice drink and they had it cleaned up and put a smile on her face in seconds. It was loud, but hey, so were we. It didn’t disappoint. Better than average food, fun atmosphere, and great service. I’d recommend it and go back.
We went in a big group when on vacation in DC. Sunday’s they have a special that comes with four pastas on a huge dish. The pesto gnocchi was to die for. We also got Caesar salad and chicken with lemon and butter and the food was fantastic. It’s family style and with 7 of us eating, we didn’t even come close to finishing all that food. Highly recommend.
So we had my birthday dinner there this weekend with a party of 11. They got us all seated on time and at a decent table in the back room. The server never really introduced himself and then asked what we wanted to order. I showed up a few minutes late and thought he'd already gotten a drink order for the table. I had discussed the menu and told him what we wanted - a few appetizers, 2 pasta dishes and 2 meat dishes. When he went to put the order in, my sister asked about taking a drink order. Apparently he hadn't done that yet. The food was delivered in a timely manner but he didn't check back re: drinks the entire time. We tried to get his attention but they are apparently quite short-staffed. We flagged down the manager for more drinks --- even more water -- as we'd been eating and had no drinks. She waited a few minutes and then approached him to get the drinks, even though he was clearly in the weeds. My dad would've ordered several more bar drinks if he had the opportunity, but in the end we just drank what we could from the water pitchers on the table. The food was good but barely enough for the 11 of us, even though our bill was quite high. When we'd eaten family style at Maggianos, the servers would another platter of the food we'd ordered if we requested it, or at least a half-platter. For example, a dish of veal parmesan was around $35 but only fed 5-6 of us.
My recommendation is to go to Maggianos if you're looking for family style Italian food. You pay per person and is a much better value. You also have a more upscale experience and we've always had great service there.
I ordered my usual which is bolognese with linguine. It’s always prepared very well and never lacks flavor. However, this time around I also had a taste for chicken parm and I ordered it as well. Perhaps it was just this one occasion, but the chicken parm wasn’t worth $31. The chicken was exceptionally thinly sliced and in fact the only thing that seemed to be family sized was the amount of cheese on the chicken. My wife and I had to scrape the cheese off because there was just so much on such a small piece of chicken. It seems the chef took a normal-sized half of a chicken breast and then spliced that in half which was the two pieces of chicken we received. This place is good for its pasta, but maybe the jury is still out for me when it comes to their chicken parm. I will give them another try. If you want very good chicken parm Buca di Beppo is a few minutes from here and is the definition of family-style chicken parm. I’ve ordered it over and over again and stands up to greatness every single time.
Great food! Large, family style portions. There were two of us for dinner. We ordered one serving of lasagna. It was enough for four or five people! The only drawback - lighting was too dark for me. Had a hard time seeing the menu. However, when in DC nex time we will go back. Loved it!
I've been here twice before this past Saturday and each time, I've been very pleased. The ambiance of the place is what initially drew me in the first time. Very classy place, yet can be a on the casual side. The portions are enormous so you would definitely want to share. The staff is great. This past Saturday my bf and I went for my birthday. We made reservations and were pretty much seated right away. We both enjoyed the experience and food very much. The only thing I would say is that we had a vent above our table blowing cold air so although the food came out deliciously hot, it got cold very quickly. Still tasted yummy, we just ate a little faster. I would still go again as this was the first time that happened and the overall visit was still extremely pleasant. Also the waitress was very informed which was great since it was my bf's first time and had questions about the menu.
I planned a surprise birthday party for my husband which turned out to not be much of a surprise. This was due to the hostesses not seating my party when they arrived. I should note that I asked a hostess of Carmine's when confirming my reservation if we all had to be present to be seated, to which he responded, "If some people are there out of your party, you should be fine." When I arrived with my husband, there were already 7 people waiting. Our reservation was for 7:45. We were not seated until 8:20. I was very disappointed at the lack of care Carmine's hostesses took in getting us seated on time, or at least within 10 minutes. I decided to let that go in hopes that the food and service would be worth the inconvenience. The food was decent when we FINALLY were served; we sat at the table for 10 minutes prior to a waiter checking on us to bring water & because he took so long, we limited our drink orders. When we asked how the ordering process works, he was impatient (it was clear that he was overextended & we were empathetic). He rushed in saying that the meals would be family style (this was a first time visit for ALL of us). We were hungry & I asked for bread. He said we needed to order food to get bread (crazy). I said that we would order broccoli and sausage pasta. His reply, "Are you sure? That's a lot of food." I was so confused and just asked that he bring calamari so we could AT LEAST get some bread. The food was decent with the exception of egg shells in our meatballs. Finally, members of our party left leaving receipts on the table. One person from our party accidentally took his signed copy and the waiter said that he needed to have it signed which I refused to do because its, well, illegal & fraudulent. Also, we had to wait for another to go dish because someone threw out the remainder of a friends order (the cleaning crew was RUDE and did not ask if we wanted boxes for our meals). In the end, we will def NOT return to Carmine's.
