About Carmine's - 91st Street - NYC

Carmine's simple and very popular concept is to serve every meal in the style of an Italian American wedding feast - which means large portions of home-style antipasti, pastas, seafood and meat entrees served on large platters designed for sharing. An entree here could easily feed three to four average eaters. Located in a sprawling, former grand ballroom on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, this is the original Carmines. Designed by Peter Niemitz, the interiors evoke the images of the quintessential New York restaurant. With elements and details from the 1920s to the 1940s, the restaurant has the look and feel of a place that has been around for much longer than it's 1990 opening. If you are in the market for freshly prepared family style Italian food that is served in huge portions at reasonable prices, this is the place for you.

Carmine's is usually one of my favorite places to visit when we're in the city. While I realize we decided to get a reservation on the Wednesday night before Thanksgiving, several things did not go well. Is it party of five we were shoved into a corner and had no room at our table to accommodate the large platters that are the stable of Carmine's. We were completely uncomfortable and while there was a table for six right near us the restaurant would not move us. We were told we would have to wait maybe another hour even though we had a reservation. Are linguine and white clam sauce was undercooked and the clams were not finished cooking and had to go back. Unfortunately the staff did not clear the dirty seafood dishes so my mom sat without eating for another 25 minutes. Well the manager did try to turn things around by bringing a plate of cannolis at the end of the evening it was rather disappointing to spend that kind of money that we did to eat spaghetti and meatballs that I did not want to eat. We typically eat at the location and Times Square but tried the Upper West Side as an alternative not sure that was the right move.

We went to see the Rockettes then to Carmines for dinner. It was superb... the food is family style and very authentic! We are Italian and it's hard to find pasta cooked right... it is here! We ordered calamari, meatballs and linguine, lemon chicken, and a porterhouse special. Everything was delicious! I will be going back next time I'm in NYC!

We were a group from high school. Other then the noise level everything else was perfect. The food was really good and so was the wine. Considering how much food we had the cost was very reasonable. We will definitely be back.

Experience was ok. Food was ok but a bit pricey. The steak was delicious but I felt like it could have been done the same elsewhere in less amounts. The wine was also served in a tiny glass and was far too warm. Server was nice though.

The staff was very accommodating, our party was late arriving but as soon as the whole party arrived we were given a table. I sat at the bar while waiting and the bartenders were great. The food is wonderful and a lot of it! We had a great dinner!

Although all was good, I was disappointed that this was a birthday celebration for myself and my friend. it was not acknowledged, so there was no birthday celebration. I did write that on my reservation.

We had a great time at Carmine's this week and will gladly return...despite a small incident with an insect but our server, Chris, quickly took care of it. Thank you for making a memorable birthday gathering.

We had a reservation on Sat. Night at 7. We got there on time and they took us right to our table while a lot of other people were waiting. Everything here is served family style. The food was amazing. Angel hair pasta with bolognese sauce and veal parm. They were both delicious. Beware of the size of dessert. No matter which one you order it's a huge portion. I can't say one bad thing about this place except when full it's very noisy. The food can't be beat!

We are from a very small town in NJ ... and there was just way too much noise and hustle and bustle for us. The wait staff was helpful. We had a 5:00 reservation and arrived there at 3:45 after a show. We were a handicapped couple and didn't realize we'd have to climb steps to check in. Anyway, we checked in and were told that we'd need to wait until very close to our reservation time. I'm not sure I'd go back ... especially because I only ever go into the city once every ten years or so. Veal Parm was excellent ... eggplant parm was salty.

We've always liked Carmine's and have eaten there many times. My daughter was performing at Symphony Space, we.had family coming in from out of town, and so I made a reservation for 5:30. My daughter had to be at rehearsal by 6:45. Our guests (2 adults and 2 children) were stuck in traffic - not knowing just how long it would take them to get to us, and having a time crunch with my daughter's rehearsal, we said we would start without them and they could join us when they arrive. (They were not far away). The hostess refused to seat us, finally said we could sit if we took a smaller table for 6 and cancelled our reservation. We did that and my guests arrived 10 minutes later. There was an empty table next to us and we asked if they could have that table. The answer was no, and they gave the table to others. My guests ended up having to leave the restaurant and fend for themselves. Very uncomfortable, very embarrassing. On top of everything else, the food we ordered came out cold and spaghetti was undercooked. We did not have the time to send it back as my daughter wolfed down her food and left. The hostess was not at all accommodating and not very nice about the whole situation. Very disappointing experience.

This was the best restaurant I've been to all over New York City. The food is delicious it's amazing, and I would recommend this restaurant to everyone. I think it's the best Italian restaurant in NYC. The staff is so friendly and helpful they have great customer service skills. I loved our waiter she was amazing. And the ambiance of this restaurant can be for any type of event or setting. I love Carmine's.
