About Carmine's - 91st Street - NYC
Carmine's simple and very popular concept is to serve every meal in the style of an Italian American wedding feast - which means large portions of home-style antipasti, pastas, seafood and meat entrees served on large platters designed for sharing. An entree here could easily feed three to four average eaters. Located in a sprawling, former grand ballroom on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, this is the original Carmines. Designed by Peter Niemitz, the interiors evoke the images of the quintessential New York restaurant. With elements and details from the 1920s to the 1940s, the restaurant has the look and feel of a place that has been around for much longer than it's 1990 opening. If you are in the market for freshly prepared family style Italian food that is served in huge portions at reasonable prices, this is the place for you.

Carmine's - 91st Street - NYC Ratings and Reviews
The ambient is energetic, the food is excellent and the portions are enormous. We had a delicious spaghetti with meatballs, and the tomato sauce was so good I forgot the cheese. Also, Charlie is the best waiter ever! He is fast, efficient, fun and charming.
The energetic atmosphere and ability to handle large groups due to the family-style menu are the main attractions when choosing Carmine's for an Italian meal in NYC. The spaghetti carbonara special was our favorite dish of the night; otherwise, the regular menu items were generously portioned, but very basic as to quality. The Titanic dessert would be better suited to a kid's birthday - heaps of whipped cream, marshmallow fluff, ice cream and somesort of soft brownie/truffle base is really just a flavorless heap of sugar.
First noted that although I was prompted and recommended to place a reservation for lunch, when we arrived there was hardly anyone there and it did not fill up while we were there for the entire time. According to the online suggestion to make a reservation, only noon and 11:30 a.m. were available. We were a party of four - our waitress was very friendly and attentive. We ordered some drinks and she was kind to share information about some of the in-house wines and some of the special beers on draft. We ordered two main courses the pasta bolognese and one of the specials of the day - chicken cacciatore. While waiting for lunch we were offered fresh assorted bread with seasoned olive oil for dipping. That was delicious. The pasta was fresh in both dishes, the portions were huge, but the chicken cacciatore was way too salty. Overall, the service and most of the food was good, but I would not say it was exceptional. I did, however, enjoy the ambiance.
This restaurant is too small and the tables are very close together. The wait staff and the patrons were bumping into a member of our parties chair throughout the whole dinner. Would not recommend this location to anyone due to the tight spacing and no privacy to hold a conversation due to the tables being on top of each other. Seems like the restaurant only cares about making money and not letting the customer actually enjoy their experience there.
This place reminded me of being with my family on the holidays or a Sunday get together. Lots of commotion, love, and food. This was our first time visiting Carmine’s (myself, my children, and our friends visiting from RI). We were extremely happy with our waitress Amanda. She was very detailed on explaining the menu and food portions. We ordered calamari, stuffed artichokes, spaghetti and meatballs and veal parm...and let’s not forget the bread basket (taking one bite of the pizza brought tears to my eyes...it was like eating my grandmas pizza...so fresh, simple, and rustic). Then for dessert we celebrated our friends birthday with the Titanic! A fudge brownie type base with vanilla and chocolate ice cream, fresh homemade whipped cream, bananas, chocolate sauce, strawberries, and nuts...oh my what’s not to love with that dessert...it was intense and HUGE! This was quite the dining experience...2big thumbs up!!!! Thank you Carmine’s for a fantastic experience!
As a family, we usually spend a weekend in the city which includes family dinner. We have not been in Carmine's in a few years, but we were fortunate enough to get a reservation for our holiday weekend trip to the city. It was a festive and fabulous experience and all that we remembered it was. We will return next year.
My daughters and I went to Manhattan for a Christmas trip and we ate dinner at Carmines the first night. The food was terrific and the Christmas décor was beautiful. We had a lot of fun and enjoyed singing along when people were celebrating a birthday. It was a fun and loud restaurant. It is what we wanted to experience in NYC, authentic Italian food in a robust environment!!
Great restaurant. Our group had a wonderful experience. We arrived after our Show and only had to wait a few minutes. They put us in the room behind the bar, which allowed us to talk, eat, and enjoy the atmosphere and each other's company. Thank you Carmine's - everything was delicious. We'll be back!!
Had reservations and was promptly seated. We had the Carmine salad and Raviolis which were good however the chicken scallopini lacked flavor. Service was good especially how busy the place was. Seating is cramped with the occasional butt was on your table by people squeezing by. The main attraction was the titanic dessert which is delicious and enough for 8!
This is a must stop whenever we are in NY. We usually go with a big group, but this time it was just the two of us. There is just way too much food for two people. We wish they had half orders. Every dish serves at least 4 people. We brought home left overs, but left over Caesar salad just doesn't make it past the first 12 hours!! We even opted out of dessert as we knew it would be way too much and it is fairly expensive. Carmine's is a fun place to go, great food and service as well as people watching!! We seriously thought about asking other patrons if they would like to split food items with us!! Always a delicious and enjoyable experience.
It took 15 minutes for the waitress to even come over. Kids meal finally came out after almost 1/2 hr and our entrees came out 20 minutes after that. Waitress only came over once. Spinach never came and she didn’t care or offer to bring it. Service very slow. Even dessert came out at 3 different times! Disappointed in service. 2 hrs with children getting restless , to long.
Salad was superior
Eggplant was mushy and gets a D-
Veal, ziti, chicken all get a grade of B-
Although the room was 80% empty, hostess would not seat us even though the rest of our party was just a few minutes away. Then the assistant hostess told us we were standing in the way.
