Carmen's Cafe - Brookside Ratings and Reviews
When you go to Carmen's in Brookside, you know it will be a nice evening with wonderful food and quiet conversation. Four of us, two moms and two daughters, have a yearly tradition of going out around the holidays for a nice meal together. It was our year to pick where to go, and Carmen's was our choice. No regrets!
We picked Carmen’s Cafe for a family birthday dinner because of the variety of menu items that suits all ages. Both my sons ordered the Paella Valenciana which was well with the 30 minute cooking time. Lots of seafood, chicken, beef, and sausage and perfect seasoning. While waiting we enjoyed calamari, stuffed artichokes, and mozzarella sticks. The Spiedini was also a tasty choice and not too garlicky. You can’t go wrong with fettuccini Alfredo for the children. The wait staff was very attentive and paced the meal perfectly.
I had the lemon chicken. The chicken was tough, dry and flavorless. The lemon sauce was gelatinous and the flavor was better described in the negative, it didn’t taste much like lemon or butter or anything and had too few capers. My husband had the chicken spiedini with diablo sauce and he loved it. We had been here before and I really liked it. I think I had gnocchi last time. We might try it again but I would get something very different.
Carmen's is one of my all time favorites. The food is authentic, original, and cannot be found anywhere else. We moved away from Kansas City 3 years ago and each time we return, we make Carmen's one of our stops during our visit. Don't miss out of a meal of a lifetime - check out Carmen's
We have been traveling 3 hours twice a year for the last 5 years to enjoy this great restaurant. We start at the bar and have a drink and Chef Henry makes us Muscles. Then we move to the dining area for the rest of our meal. It doesn't matter what you get it is all great food. The staff is all great! Kevin
We've been going to Carmen's for years and are never disappointed. Since we live about thirty minutes away, we appreciate the ability to make reservations and have always been seated promptly. We love several dishes and they are generous enough to split an entree, especially after having an order of their incredible 'Italian Butter.' We love the decor and atmosphere and plan to go back soon.
We ate here on a Thursday night. Fairly empty. The menu is nothing special. Bread a. Butter were provided. It boring white bread in the shape of an Italian loaf with no taste no texture and no crispy crust. The salad was ok but smothered in grated cheese and my wife doesn't eat Parmesan type cheese. In fairness they offered to bring another salad. The eggplant appetizer was like a deconstructed eggplant Parmesan. Three breaded and fried cross sections of eggplant with a tomato sauce and light cheese topping. I think they could be a little more creative with this, but it was as described on the menu. After our appetizers ww waited for at least 20 minutes in a sparsely occupied restaurant with no follow up on where was our dinner? I ordered veal scallops with artichokes over fettuccine alfredo. There was one artichoke heart in the dish and both the veal and the artichoke were smothered in an uninspired Alfredo sauce.
We did not order dessert. Kansas City has some nice Italian restaurants. This is NOT one of them.
