Carmen's Cafe - Brookside Ratings and Reviews
I had the lemon chicken. The chicken was tough, dry and flavorless. The lemon sauce was gelatinous and the flavor was better described in the negative, it didn’t taste much like lemon or butter or anything and had too few capers. My husband had the chicken spiedini with diablo sauce and he loved it. We had been here before and I really liked it. I think I had gnocchi last time. We might try it again but I would get something very different.
Carmen's is one of my all time favorites. The food is authentic, original, and cannot be found anywhere else. We moved away from Kansas City 3 years ago and each time we return, we make Carmen's one of our stops during our visit. Don't miss out of a meal of a lifetime - check out Carmen's
We have been traveling 3 hours twice a year for the last 5 years to enjoy this great restaurant. We start at the bar and have a drink and Chef Henry makes us Muscles. Then we move to the dining area for the rest of our meal. It doesn't matter what you get it is all great food. The staff is all great! Kevin
We've been going to Carmen's for years and are never disappointed. Since we live about thirty minutes away, we appreciate the ability to make reservations and have always been seated promptly. We love several dishes and they are generous enough to split an entree, especially after having an order of their incredible 'Italian Butter.' We love the decor and atmosphere and plan to go back soon.
We ate here on a Thursday night. Fairly empty. The menu is nothing special. Bread a. Butter were provided. It boring white bread in the shape of an Italian loaf with no taste no texture and no crispy crust. The salad was ok but smothered in grated cheese and my wife doesn't eat Parmesan type cheese. In fairness they offered to bring another salad. The eggplant appetizer was like a deconstructed eggplant Parmesan. Three breaded and fried cross sections of eggplant with a tomato sauce and light cheese topping. I think they could be a little more creative with this, but it was as described on the menu. After our appetizers ww waited for at least 20 minutes in a sparsely occupied restaurant with no follow up on where was our dinner? I ordered veal scallops with artichokes over fettuccine alfredo. There was one artichoke heart in the dish and both the veal and the artichoke were smothered in an uninspired Alfredo sauce.
We did not order dessert. Kansas City has some nice Italian restaurants. This is NOT one of them.
We loved the atmosphere (music in the background, but you could still speak at a normal volume and be heard) were just overall underwhelmed with the food. His house salad was soggy, my Caesar salad had an interesting taste to the dressing. We both got pasta dishes. They were good, but not great. Nothing explicitly wrong, just wasn't our favorite meal.
Fiancé and I came to Carmen's to celebrate our engagement! Food was amazing, ambiance was romantic and inviting, but it was a little difficult communicating with our waitress on wine choices as there was quite a language barrier. Overall it was a great evening and we will be back!
My first visit for lunch with friends. First customer to arrive for lunch and was greeted & seated quickly. The waitress was very accommodating, waiting to take our orders while we visited then after the meal asked if we preferred three bills. We elected to just split it 3 ways.
The food was good but my spedini (marked as a customer favorite")was pretty dry and my mixed veggies not quite warm or cooked to tender.
I will perhaps give Carmen's a second chance.
Old friends of many years who now live in far flung places gathered after 15-20 years apart. It was a perfect choice. There was something for everyone's taste from sphagetti to salmon salad. The service was polite and helpful, even taking group pics for us. I know I will be going back.
A good staple in Brookside history. The wine selection needs to be improved.
The Salmon Oscar was prepared well, but pasta was a miss by the kitchen this evening.
The Spedini was okay as well as the Crab Cakes. Key word (okay)
No 5 stars tonight. 2.5 to 3 at best.
