The staff went out of their way to accommodate some dietary restrictions during the busy graduation weekend. We had a lovely corner table, a wonderful meal and great service.
Went for graduation meal with a party of 11. They were pretty accomodating. Waiter was attentive. Food was quite good—especially the lobster ravioli.
Everything was outstanding. Busy night of course, noise level so loud we could not hear others at the table, but we all agreed that it was a great time, amazing food and service. Thank you.
The waitress seemed to be a bit distracted. We were there on our lunch break and had time constraints. She didn't seem to grasp that fact and was very slow in her service. We asked for an extra chair twice and finally just got it ourselves. Our reservation was for noon and we didn't get our meal until 1:00. Two people didn't even eat, just put their food in a to-go box (which we had to ask for twice) because they had 1:30 patients to see. Next time we have lunch there we will definitely allocate more time.
Went for Mother's Day brunch. With my 95 yo father in law who uses a walker. So we did have special needs. It was very difficult for him to manage walking around all the tables - people were rude and wouldn't yield to him. Tables were crammed together with the buffet set up in another room. The salad looked wilted - didn't even try it. The biscuits and gravy were cold. The pasta with red sauce was cold. Didn't even see the omelette station until after I already had filled my plate - it was somewhat hidden. I will say the bacon was delicious and the fruit was wonderful. And they carry the wine that my husband loves. Server was prompt and helpful. I would go back for a regular dinner, but I'm not a big fan of brunch anyways and this was no different.
My first Sunday Mothers Day Brunch and I was not disappointed. Food was delicious and had large variety. Service was exceptional and ambience was great!
Went to Carmela's for Mother's Day Brunch 2018. Food was fabulous, but restaurant set up completely took away from the food. Instead of having the normal floor plan of the restaurant, they crammed in long tables which were thisclose together. The buffet was actually in the bakery and there was just dishes of food on more long tables. No ambiance, no class, no direction. I felt like I was in a cafeteria line and sitting in a high school cafeteria to eat. Was noisy, and you could not visit with people a couple seats down from you at your table unless you wanted someone at the next table to hear you. Paper napkins on Mother's Day spending almost $30/plate?? I might return for a regular meal, but not for the buffet. Disappointing.
Mothers day brunch every year. Totally Awesome! Nice job Carmella's!
Food was very good. Service was a little slow, most likely due to large groups and being prom night for several local schools. Server recommended several wines to several of our party based on their preferences, nice touch, but didn't ask if they were satisfied after serving.
If you like Italian we would recommend.
I was happy to see the restaurant packed at 6:00 on a Saturday night. It's important that locally owned restaurants downtown South Bend thrive, and Carmela's is an exceptional restaurant. Our server was a bit overwhelmed and had to send other staff to check in with us a couple times, but given the crowd, this was understandable. The arancini and chicken scallopini were both very delicious.
Outstanding service and food! Great find. As we are relatively new to the South Bend area, we are always on the lookout for new places to eat, especially before going to the Morris. I highly recommend it!
I come here with friends when I visit South Bend and I’m never disappointed with the food. This experience was no exception. The appetizers (bruschetta and calamari) were very good and all of us raved about our meals ranging from lobster ravioli, lasagna and spaghetti and meatballs. However, our service was less than expected. Our waiter, Chad, brought the wrong wine (Cabernet rather than Chardonnay!) and when it came time for dessert (we wanted tiramisu), there was hardly anything to chose from since a wedding was held in a separate room and desserts were limited. Chad was able to “scrounge up two cannolis”, which were very good. Finally, Chad said he wanted to “up sell” us since we looked like a fun group and suggested 4 lemoncellos. Some members of our table thought the drinks were going to be complimentary given the dessert and wine mix up, but another member heard “up sell” also so I was sure we would be required to pay. 4 small shot glasses later at $8 a piece, we did not leave satisfied with our experience.
We had a large family group having dinner, the food was amazing, and service was incredible. The mushroom ravioli was out of this world!
Great food! Waitress was attentive without interrupting our conversation. Would recommend if you love Italian Food!
If you’re in the mood for Italian Food in South Bend this is the place to go! Such a friendly environment and great food!
Beautiful Restaurant and wonderful Italian meals! Was perfect for a special occasion.
Came for dinner on a week night. The restaurant has a very nice atmosphere, very old world. Our waitress was very nice, however we had some issues with ordering drinks. Ordered a bottle of wine and after awhile we were told they did not have it. Ordered a second bottle and while we were waiting I ordered a glass of Proseco. It came but was totally flat, obviously the bottle had been opened for a bit. Sent it back and the waitress came back in a few minutes and said they were all out of Proseco- seriously!! Bad start to the evening, however not the waitresses fault. They need to get on top of their wine list. The food was good, however service was a little rushed. Bringing soup and salad while still eating appetizer and the same for the entree. May try again if in the area, but they need to step up their game
Out to celebrate Employee Appreciation day, with lunch by the bosses.
We stopped in for dinner early on a Friday evening and were seated right away with our reservation. Our waitress was extremely helpful with explaining items on the menu. Highlights included the mozzarella sticks and our desserts. We had the lemon sorbet and the chocolate bomba. The restaurant is connected to a bakery and they even threw in some of their amaretto cookies for free. They were so good we bought a pound of them to take back with us. Overall a great experience!
This is a great little gem in South Bend. Food is fantastic and service is top notch. We will definitely visit again next time we are in the area
We are from out of state but have been to Carmela's 6 or 7 times since the fall. When we are visiting our daughter at Notre Dame we make it a point to have a family meal at Carmela's. We were in South Bend last week for four nights and we ate at Carmela's twice, which should indicate how highly we rate this place.
On each trip we look forward to the calamari and bruschetta which always start off our meals. Lobster ravioli (my daughter's favorite along with their homemade soups), Rotolo, and a salmon special were all outstanding. For dessert the 'bombas' (spelling?) are a favorite.
Great Italian food - so says my Italian wife!
We will be back many more times (at least until May 2021).
As new college parents we are happy to have found Carmela’s and Macri’s !!!
Michael was an excellent server
Great food. Prompt, friendly service. Table was in an aisle with lots of traffic. That is the only negative
We were their on a "show" night & even though we had allowed ourselves 2 hrs. we were rushing. They were slammed & the owners daughter came by & went over the top in helping us cash out & even gave us free dessert to go. Definitely a do over.
The homemade pastas, and quite atmosphere made for a great night out. Conversation could be had easily in the large room, tables in the alcoves made it cozy and inviting. Speciality deserts made us feel like we were back in Italy. The coffee was incredible as well. Great service! Great prices for an upscale restaurant. Made a 615pm reservation and made it to the theater for an 8pm show with five mins to spare. This is the type of restaurant that isn’t hurrying you out to seat the next couple. It’s a full dining experience where you can have good conversation in the quite atmosphere and enjoy your date.
Had dinner with friends and the food and service couldn't have been better. Beautiful ambiance for that special evening out. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone. Our server, Susan, did a fantastic job! Cannot wait to go back!
This is my 2nd time eating at Carmela’s. I can’t say enough great things about this restaurant. On this particular visit, I was with my 12 year old daughter. We ordered dessert to go because we were so full from our scrumptious dinner! My daughter ordered a piece of chocolate cake. They did not have any more slices, no big deal really. Instead of having her leave without a dessert, a server got a cupcake from the bakery side of the building and gave it to my daughter. I thought it was so thoughtful!
If you want great food, service and atmoshepere, visit Carmela’s!
From the service to the food, this restaurant is top notch. I lived in Boston for seven years, and I had the best calamari ever at Carmela's. The chicken scallopini is amazing. The lasagna melts in your mouth. If you love Italian food, you will not be disappointed.
The food and service were both outstanding in spite of them being busy. I’d suggest you definitely get reservations on the weekends
The food and the menu were outstanding the wine was excellent service above average I would highly recommend this establishment for dinner and will do it again
The food was just okay - I had the chicken marsala and it was the worst one I think I’ve had in a multitude of restaurants. The flavor was bland and the chicken was not the highest of quality, sort of rubbery. The only thing good was the wine. So for the cost of the meal I was not impressed. Cheesecake was delicious.
SERVICE WAS IMPECCABLE...We had a 6 and 2 year old with us....and the server was extremely helpful with finding crayons and just made it easy for us......
The dinner was terrific, relaxed and special as we were able to spend three hours there enjoying the food, atmosphere to celebrate our daughters birthday.
While visiting our daughter at Notre Dame the three of us had dinner at Carmela’s - our fourth time at this wonderful restaurant. Everything we had was magnificent: calamari, bruschetta, lobster ravioli, spinach ravioli, and a salmon special. The lobster ravioli has been my daughter’s #1 choice on each visit. As usual we tried each other’s meals and were unanimous that all were outstanding. If you enjoy Italian food this is tough to beat!
They never disappoint! We are always confident inviting any friends or family members, even the picky eaters, that they will like the food! The attached bakery is a gem as well!
As usual Carmellas met our expectations. We were here for my daughters 26th birthday
& this was her choice as she loves Carmellas. The place was packed but we were seated upon arrival it took a few minutes to get drinks but the service from our waitress was above & beyond I wish I could remember her name becuase she deservres recognition. The apetizers
calimari & brusueto were very good. Everyone enjoyed the meal . All I can say about the desert was I was enjoying the chocolate bomb so much, except from from hearing everyone say great
I realy dont know what they ordered. Altogether another great night at Carmellas.
Amazing! Wonderful! Love, love, love! My new favorite place for dinner out.
Service was terrible. Took over 20 minutes to get a waitress to say hello and bring waters, and only went downhill from there. Had a reservation for 6pm and we were stuck there until 8pm. Food came out quickly once they finally took our order, but the waitress acted passive aggressive all night. We asked for more oil for the bread and she made a made a smart comment then over filled the dish onto the table. Ordered dessert with coffee, dessert took 15 minutes to come out and the coffee took an addition 15 minutes after the dessert was served. Once we finally got the check we waited another 20 minutes to have her run our credit card, which never happened. We ended up leaving cash so we could just get the experience over with.
