This is a great little gem in South Bend. Food is fantastic and service is top notch. We will definitely visit again next time we are in the area
We are from out of state but have been to Carmela's 6 or 7 times since the fall. When we are visiting our daughter at Notre Dame we make it a point to have a family meal at Carmela's. We were in South Bend last week for four nights and we ate at Carmela's twice, which should indicate how highly we rate this place.
On each trip we look forward to the calamari and bruschetta which always start off our meals. Lobster ravioli (my daughter's favorite along with their homemade soups), Rotolo, and a salmon special were all outstanding. For dessert the 'bombas' (spelling?) are a favorite.
Great Italian food - so says my Italian wife!
We will be back many more times (at least until May 2021).
As new college parents we are happy to have found Carmela’s and Macri’s !!!
Michael was an excellent server
Great food. Prompt, friendly service. Table was in an aisle with lots of traffic. That is the only negative
The homemade pastas, and quite atmosphere made for a great night out. Conversation could be had easily in the large room, tables in the alcoves made it cozy and inviting. Speciality deserts made us feel like we were back in Italy. The coffee was incredible as well. Great service! Great prices for an upscale restaurant. Made a 615pm reservation and made it to the theater for an 8pm show with five mins to spare. This is the type of restaurant that isn’t hurrying you out to seat the next couple. It’s a full dining experience where you can have good conversation in the quite atmosphere and enjoy your date.
Had dinner with friends and the food and service couldn't have been better. Beautiful ambiance for that special evening out. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone. Our server, Susan, did a fantastic job! Cannot wait to go back!
This is my 2nd time eating at Carmela’s. I can’t say enough great things about this restaurant. On this particular visit, I was with my 12 year old daughter. We ordered dessert to go because we were so full from our scrumptious dinner! My daughter ordered a piece of chocolate cake. They did not have any more slices, no big deal really. Instead of having her leave without a dessert, a server got a cupcake from the bakery side of the building and gave it to my daughter. I thought it was so thoughtful!
If you want great food, service and atmoshepere, visit Carmela’s!
From the service to the food, this restaurant is top notch. I lived in Boston for seven years, and I had the best calamari ever at Carmela's. The chicken scallopini is amazing. The lasagna melts in your mouth. If you love Italian food, you will not be disappointed.
The food and service were both outstanding in spite of them being busy. I’d suggest you definitely get reservations on the weekends
The food and the menu were outstanding the wine was excellent service above average I would highly recommend this establishment for dinner and will do it again
The food was just okay - I had the chicken marsala and it was the worst one I think I’ve had in a multitude of restaurants. The flavor was bland and the chicken was not the highest of quality, sort of rubbery. The only thing good was the wine. So for the cost of the meal I was not impressed. Cheesecake was delicious.
SERVICE WAS IMPECCABLE...We had a 6 and 2 year old with us....and the server was extremely helpful with finding crayons and just made it easy for us......
The dinner was terrific, relaxed and special as we were able to spend three hours there enjoying the food, atmosphere to celebrate our daughters birthday.
While visiting our daughter at Notre Dame the three of us had dinner at Carmela’s - our fourth time at this wonderful restaurant. Everything we had was magnificent: calamari, bruschetta, lobster ravioli, spinach ravioli, and a salmon special. The lobster ravioli has been my daughter’s #1 choice on each visit. As usual we tried each other’s meals and were unanimous that all were outstanding. If you enjoy Italian food this is tough to beat!
They never disappoint! We are always confident inviting any friends or family members, even the picky eaters, that they will like the food! The attached bakery is a gem as well!
As usual Carmellas met our expectations. We were here for my daughters 26th birthday
& this was her choice as she loves Carmellas. The place was packed but we were seated upon arrival it took a few minutes to get drinks but the service from our waitress was above & beyond I wish I could remember her name becuase she deservres recognition. The apetizers
calimari & brusueto were very good. Everyone enjoyed the meal . All I can say about the desert was I was enjoying the chocolate bomb so much, except from from hearing everyone say great
I realy dont know what they ordered. Altogether another great night at Carmellas.
Amazing! Wonderful! Love, love, love! My new favorite place for dinner out.
Service was terrible. Took over 20 minutes to get a waitress to say hello and bring waters, and only went downhill from there. Had a reservation for 6pm and we were stuck there until 8pm. Food came out quickly once they finally took our order, but the waitress acted passive aggressive all night. We asked for more oil for the bread and she made a made a smart comment then over filled the dish onto the table. Ordered dessert with coffee, dessert took 15 minutes to come out and the coffee took an addition 15 minutes after the dessert was served. Once we finally got the check we waited another 20 minutes to have her run our credit card, which never happened. We ended up leaving cash so we could just get the experience over with.
The host was a bit rude upon arrival, but the waitress, food, drink and dessert were amazing, and surprisingly not much more than other Italian restaurants. The ravioli were so good with the vodka sauce, and we loved the almond cake. So delicious. We can't wait to go back :)
Service was great. I had the spinach and ricotta ravioli! Great flavors. The dessert tray looked amazing! That's on my to do list next time I am there.
Excellent service. The best Italian I've had in quite some time. Don't miss out on the bakery treasures next door. They're wonderful
This was our first visit to Carmela's. Our only complaint is that we did visit sooner! It was wonderful!
The best thing about Carmela's is the atmosphere. The brick archways and simulated grape arbors over the tables are very charming. The food's good too.
Warm, cozy atmosphere. Pleasant and welcoming wait staff. Wide menu choices. Well above average in taste and presentation.
We had a wonderful dinner the other night at Carmelas!! Our waitress was FABULOUS and knowledgeable about the menu and drinks. She was super friendly and great with our kids. She was attentive but not interruptive or pushy.
The food was wonderful and plentiful. The desserts were inventive and delicious! We would go again!!
Food was ok. Way too loud in side you cannot hear to have a conversation. There were pandhandlers begging for money right outside the door.
Combined business meeting/birthday of one of the members Great cozy table. Excellent food. Our waitress (sorry, didn't get her name; daughter of the owners) was fantastic! Attentive, knowledgeable, courteous, skilled, fun. Great experience. We will be back.
The food was very good and our waiter was exceptional. Everyone was pleasant and it was a relaxing atmosphere.
Our first time there and we were not disappointed. We had an awesome dining experience and can't wait to come back.
Most recently, my wife, daughter, and I dined there in mid January. It was our second time there in the past three months. I was stuck right off the bat that our waitress remembered our preferences for appetizers even though it was a month since our last visit.
We had a great Italian meal - again. This is GREAT Italian food! The "bruschetta alla calabrese" and the calamari were outstanding and will always be the way we start our meals there. Excellent was how my wife summed up her meal of vitello involtini. My daughter insists on having the lobster ravioli on each visit - and looks forward to the next time there. My main course was a veal special which was great. We will be visiting Carmela's on all of our visits to Notre Dame. This is Italian!
Fantastic food with exceptional service!
First time trying veal and it was smothered in gravy. Very upsetting. Service was great but cook needs to learn how to portion correctly.
The atmosphere and décor is classy and inviting. The wine selection is excellent, I had the sea bass which was flaky, buttery deliciousness. The tiramisu was heaven. Definitely will be going back.
Hello. My husband and I were in town visiting family for New Year’s Eve and I had done some research ahead of time and so we made a reservation. Extremely lovely restaurant, and great food options. I’m a bit of an Italian food snob I must admit, so I’m a bit picky. The cheese sticks were amazing as our server Pier said they were. I did need to send one back because it had not melted at all. No issue and she actually brought us an extra. That was generous. We had the fettuccine Alfredo with Italian sausage and he thought it was the best he ever had. I agreed. My veal involtini was good, not great. I was a bit disappointed in the quality of the veal. It was a small serving and kind of too dry for my taste. The pasta had little flavor. I thought overpriced but veal is pricey. We wished there was another option for bread, or at least that the bread served was a bit toasted or baked. Didn’t partake at all. Our server couldn’t handle our table in a timely way. Started out ok but went downhill. I was able to speak to one of the managers as we were leaving so she is aware of the details. She didn’t come back for a a super long time. Didn’t bring another requested soda. Didn’t bother to bring us the dessert tray even though she told us about a few items. I actually considered dessert but not at that point. I had much higher expectations for our dining experience overall, but it didn’t quite meet them. If we lived in the area we probably would visit again. Thank you
Went to Carmella's for our anniversary. Service was excellent and the food, oh my, was wonderful ! We will definitely be back !!
It was a decent meal and the food was good, but the dining experience could have been better. Service was slow and the cooked food was only luke warm when finally served. The waitress apologized several times for the delay indicating our order was not prioritized correctly. However, this happened on a previous visit. Carmela's seems to be challenged when large groups of diners arrive on special occasions.
Celebrating friendship and the holidays. Great service and food. Just a bit chilly by the door (our only complaint!) but food was warm and delicious. Appreciated being able to make a reservation online with a request to be by the window, especially since two large groups came after us. Despite the large groups our server was attentive, friendly, and helpful.
Wonderful for a group of 8 or less. They gave us a table in a corner gazebo that was private and quiet and yet had a clear view of the gorgeous 2-story Christmas tree! This restaurant is a gem and certainly easier on the pocketbook than the lovely ambiance would imply! We did dinner with friends before live theater and it made it an evening to remember fondly!
Pleasant atmosphere for a meal while we were visiting South Bend, and the food was delicious.
