Carmela's at Macri's Ratings and Reviews
Most recently, my wife, daughter, and I dined there in mid January. It was our second time there in the past three months. I was stuck right off the bat that our waitress remembered our preferences for appetizers even though it was a month since our last visit.
We had a great Italian meal - again. This is GREAT Italian food! The "bruschetta alla calabrese" and the calamari were outstanding and will always be the way we start our meals there. Excellent was how my wife summed up her meal of vitello involtini. My daughter insists on having the lobster ravioli on each visit - and looks forward to the next time there. My main course was a veal special which was great. We will be visiting Carmela's on all of our visits to Notre Dame. This is Italian!
Hello. My husband and I were in town visiting family for New Year’s Eve and I had done some research ahead of time and so we made a reservation. Extremely lovely restaurant, and great food options. I’m a bit of an Italian food snob I must admit, so I’m a bit picky. The cheese sticks were amazing as our server Pier said they were. I did need to send one back because it had not melted at all. No issue and she actually brought us an extra. That was generous. We had the fettuccine Alfredo with Italian sausage and he thought it was the best he ever had. I agreed. My veal involtini was good, not great. I was a bit disappointed in the quality of the veal. It was a small serving and kind of too dry for my taste. The pasta had little flavor. I thought overpriced but veal is pricey. We wished there was another option for bread, or at least that the bread served was a bit toasted or baked. Didn’t partake at all. Our server couldn’t handle our table in a timely way. Started out ok but went downhill. I was able to speak to one of the managers as we were leaving so she is aware of the details. She didn’t come back for a a super long time. Didn’t bring another requested soda. Didn’t bother to bring us the dessert tray even though she told us about a few items. I actually considered dessert but not at that point. I had much higher expectations for our dining experience overall, but it didn’t quite meet them. If we lived in the area we probably would visit again. Thank you
It was a decent meal and the food was good, but the dining experience could have been better. Service was slow and the cooked food was only luke warm when finally served. The waitress apologized several times for the delay indicating our order was not prioritized correctly. However, this happened on a previous visit. Carmela's seems to be challenged when large groups of diners arrive on special occasions.
Celebrating friendship and the holidays. Great service and food. Just a bit chilly by the door (our only complaint!) but food was warm and delicious. Appreciated being able to make a reservation online with a request to be by the window, especially since two large groups came after us. Despite the large groups our server was attentive, friendly, and helpful.
Wonderful for a group of 8 or less. They gave us a table in a corner gazebo that was private and quiet and yet had a clear view of the gorgeous 2-story Christmas tree! This restaurant is a gem and certainly easier on the pocketbook than the lovely ambiance would imply! We did dinner with friends before live theater and it made it an evening to remember fondly!
Terrific meal after a Notre Dame football game. Downtown, away from the post game traffic and crowds. Entrees and wine superb. Shrimp cocktail a little less than expected size wise and presentation wise but still delicious. Mozzarella appetizer right on target. Highly recommended!
I was very happy with my experience. My 6yo son and I were in town for ND v Navy game. It was very busy but my reservation time was still met very close to my expectation. Our waitress was phenominal. Treated my son like a grown up, brought food and drinks very quickly and allowed us to really enjoy our meal.
The food was fantastic. Calamari App, Lobster Ravioli and a great chocolate bomba for dessert.
I will definitely be back the next time I'm in South Bend.
Went there for dinner with 14 other people - table was all set up and the service was fabulous. The waitress helped us order the right amount of appetizers for the table ( perfect amout) and the entrees were really good. Again the waitress gave good recommendations! Our overall experience was really good, usually with big groups it an go either way but we were very happy with everything - food and service were great - ambiance is a bit lacking but everything else about it was great
We always love Carmella's, especially after a Notre Dame victory. The friendly family atmosphere, with son Vinney coming in to say hello from Chicago, is a special treat. We recommend Carmellas to ALL our family and friends. The salmon with goat cheese was absolutely the best salmon I've ever had, outside what my husband grills for me and our guests at home. The lasagna is the best we've had outside Venice! Thank you!
Made a reservation 2 months early for a dinner in late October, for a group of 5 expecting a pleasant dinner with friends. I called during the afternoon to ask if they could accommodate 6, and was told yes, we will make it work. When we arrived, they seated us in a noisy unattractive cafeteria-like area with bright lights and no ambiance, unless you like looking at closed deli counters while eating dinner.
It turned out our original table for 5, in the actual restaurant, was actually a 4-top made into a 5, so they couldn't then add a sixth.
The maitre'd was incompetent and unhelpful, and although he assured me he would find us a real table and move us shortly, was never seen again. No visit to the table to check on us, no offer of a dessert, nothing. The food is fair, the wine list down market, the service sloppy.
It was a terrible night. Never again.
The food at Carmela's was great, but the service was honestly bad. I will say we were there on a home football weekend for Notre Dame, and the crowd was loud and excited about the upcoming football game. So....the noise level was expected. But our waitress was overwhelmed and seemed to be preoccupied with all the tables she was trying to accommodate. I still would recommend the place because my pasta was so good. I would definitely go back.
Food was excellent again. BUT, our night out was spoiled by the table of 25 or so that was right next to us. They were loud, shouting to each other across the table, and then they each got up to speak, and to be heard, they had to speak loudly. This is our second visit to this restaurant, and both times our meal was excellent but we had to shout to hear each other because of a large group set right in the middle of the restaurant. The restaurant needs a private room for groups this large.
We're both cutting back on meat in our diet, so it was nice to see so many meat-free options on the menu. We shared the calamari appetizer to start. Being a fan of calamari, they did not disappoint. I had the Linguine con Vongole with white wine sauce for the main course and it was delicious! The atmosphere was very tranquil; it made you feel like you were out on a veranda somewhere with the beautiful arches all around the room and the streetlight-like lighting. I'd definitely go again and try something new; there were a lot of great choices!
I love Italian food and this restaurant did not disappoint! Great food that will have me going back. Service was slightly below average. One member of our party spilled their full glass of wine and was not offered a replacement glass. Not good customer service.
