Carlyle Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
The space is charming, but the food is truly cruise-ship awful (salmon rillettes looked and smelled like cat food and had three potato chips stuck on top), the service is both snooty and unpolished (don't act like snobs with your french menu when you don't train your snooty staff to pronounce a single thing on the menu), and the prices are out of sight, even for the Upper East Side. You go for the old world atmosphere and décor. That's it! Eat before hand, order as lightly as they will allow you, have an overpriced drink, and enjoy the octogenarian crowd.
Like slipping into a warm bath. Let yourself be pampered in the most gorgeous surroundings imaginable, with the ultimate attentive service, fine linens, spectacular flowers etc.
You'll still find many old familiar dishes on the menu, AND faces in the dining room (guests as well as staff). Total luxury and comfort in which to enjoy life's most significant occasions--or just any old night of the week, for the truly fortunate!
There is nothing to compare with a couple of hours spent in the timeless elegance of The Carlyle dining room. Consistent, superb, quiet and when I'm there, I feel transported to a very special place, where the noise and concerns of the city are checked at the door. The service is impeccable. Old school in the very best sense of the phrase.
Amazing. 5 stars across the board. Impeccable service. In a place like this, you would expect snooty servers among the affluent crowd, but they treat everyone equally and that's an aspect of dining that I do appreciate. A gentleman walked in without a jacket, and the hostess provided him with one (as opposed to sending him elsewhere.) That is exemplary service. Wonderful meal. One of the only restaurants that serve soufflés. Not great for vegan choices, as there is no separate menu for dietary restrictions, but they try to provide vegetarian and gluten free options. If I could come here everyday, I absolutely would.
My gift to my wife for Valentines Day was Lunch at the beautiful Carlyle dining room.
We were very pleased with the ambiance, the superb service, and the excellent lunch.
We both chose entree salads, the presentation of the salads was like out of a gourmet magazine, the flavors of both salads were wonderful.
The meal was expensive, the setting, the service, and the food made it worth every penny.
You will enjoy your experiance at the Carlyle!
Had a beautiful time, Michael the captain was seeing that we had a wonderful time. Unfortunately we sat in the side room (that was empty at the time) but apparently it's the more casual room. Jeans and new balance sneakers group sat down for drinks...oops now we know the main dinning is for the classier crowd. Will be dinning again. Everything we had was amazing.
We usually go there a few times each year. Service is outstanding, decor is outstanding. But this time food was very disappointing. Coq A vin was overcooked, vinaigrette salad dressing was so tart it would have been easier to suck a lemon. Our Captain was great & was charming & did well to make up for the unimpressive meal. Maybe the chef was serving left overs???
First, I love The Carlyle -- it's an irreplaceable institution. So, with a bit of sadness, I report very disappointing service. The room was exquisite, the food superb, the ambiance second to none as always. The service was a bit of a head scratcher. Although it was not busy and there was ample staff (Manager, supervisor, servers, food runners) they seemed to be studiously avoiding looking at the guests, not just our table. Coffee was not poured and we were not checked on although they were fussing at tasks all around us. My pointed attempts at eye contact did not result in anything. I was finally able to flag down a runner, who brought the check. The manager in returning the check did not recall that we had checked coats with him. Finally, in a bizarre interlude, my trip to the men's room was awkward and embarrassing. There was a female housekeeper in there cleaning and she did not speak or leave when I asked her to step put for a minute. The staff is obviously capable of maintaining the highest standards of presentation and upkeep. Please don't forget the human element and protect our beloved Carlyle from fading away.
