Went there with a friend to celebrate my birthday. Maybe the best meal of my life, and I've eaten in plenty of great restaurants in the USA and abroad. The room was elegant and quiet -- quiet is very important to me, having been in restaurants in NYC where I couldn't hear my table mates. The food was out of this world. I've been to expensive places that did not deliver full value -- Carlyle does. I've known for a long time that Carlyle was a JFK hangout, and now I know why!
I think it is reasonable to expect finer food and better service at a restaurant that presents itself as the finest of dining experiences in New York City. The squash soup was spectacular and the beet carpaccio was quite good. The Coq Au Vin had a rich aroma, but was basically tasteless and the chicken was overcooked. The duck was okay. The staff was pleasant and friendly, but not as attentive as one would expect in a restaurant like this. Just for the record, this is the first and only negative review I have ever posted.
The Carlyle restaurant is, above all, a very pleasant place to be. One can have a conversation despite the background music which is just that: it is unobtrusive. The table settings are beautiful. The service was good except for wine service: the first wine bottle that was recommended was no good at all; it was sour. The second was OK but not great. The restaurant needs a sommelier, not just a captain. The food was generally good to excellent except for the special of sirloin which was undistinguished.
Some items were really overpriced.
A classic that stands the test of time. I would eat every meal of deep meaning or significant consequence I have at the Carlyle -- if I could.
Subdued elegance. Extremely relaxing atmosphere. Food was absolutely delicious and a lot more quantity then I expected for a French restaurant in a hotel. Wait staff very attentive and charming. We went for a meal prior to going to Bemelmans bar for a night of jazz. Pleasantly surprised.
I have eaten at the Carlyle many times. My most recent visit was very disappointing. The food was adquet and the service mediocre. I will never dine there again.
Lovely ambiance in all rooms--flowers, linens, decor all elegant and lovely. Service in Restaurant was noisy, and not attentive. When requested they came into action, but hard to find someone at times, while busboys cleared and set tables for next mealtime. Extremely pricey but delicious lemon ricotta pancakes and crisp bacon. Hamburgers at Bemelman's are delicious, and of course the piano there is always a treat, but the experience resembles a sardine can.
Wonderful breakfast spot! Very good service and great selection of breakfast items.
Very good, like always, service and great meals. I like CVharles, he is taking good care of us.
The food was good, with the exception of the white asparagus of inferior quality, improperly peeled, with hollandaise sauce both served cold from the icebox, inedible and highly priced!
This is the most expensive restaurant in New York, more care should be taken on the quality of what they serve, and the service.
The service was abysmal, very slow, we always had to ask for the wine to be served. Nearly impossible to get the attention of a waiter!
All the waiters gathered around the waiter-station with their backs to the clients and ignoring them.
It is a beautiful room, pity that the waiters seem no to care about service, it looks like they are boycotting the place!
Customer service was not what I expected for this very expensive restaurant. It was very slow, had to wait 20min seating at the table before someone got our drink order! Appertizer, frois grois and the escargot were really good. For the main course, salmon and the coq au vin were not that great. Crepe Suzette was fantastic, the highlight of the meal. Overall, I would not recommend The Carlyle, way too expensive for the value and the meal quality.
The food was exquisite, fillet mignon was the most delicious I've ever eaten and pana cota was a delicious dessert to finish the meal with.
Beautiful in decor and excellent in service, the food was the highlight of the meal!
Perfect from start to finish. A class act!
This was a wonderful experience, despite the bar tab. The ambiance, service, food, and overall situation were incomparable.
We had a Saturday lunch at The Carlyle Restaurant to celebrate our anniversary. It was a classic and memorable New York experience. The decor is elegant. The food is so tasty. The service is good and discreet.
We have dined at the Carlyle many times and are big fans. However, this special, mind blowingly expensive Valentine’s Day dinner was a disaster to put it kindly. We couldn’t get anyone’s attention between courses. The time between courses was interminable and the wait for the soufflé desert was close to an hour. Other guests, like, we, sat without drinks, food or service Unbelievable. The tab for two was $437! They have some work to do.
My boyfriend and I came here for an early valentines dinner. We were able to use a Travelzoo deal and it was such a wonderful value.
The service was top notch and the food was great!
As always, food, service, and ambience were excellent.
One of the best dinners I’ve ever had in New York. Perfect Upper East Side ambiance. Too bad they do not enforce their jackets for dinner rule.
Long time favorite Restaurant in New York. Excellent atmosphere of a by-gone era.
Service was perfect. The meal was amazing and it was a great place for a special occasion.
The worst service only exceeded by the quality or lack of quality of the prepared food
Told new chef was the problem
This is the Carlyle and was shameful to this hotels’s reputation
Loved every moment !
It was superb from beginning to end. The bet and burrata was amazing, so was the raspberry soufflés for dessert. We also had the prime rib and tuna- greT meal all around, and Charles ( Chuck) as the dining captain was outstanding. Also his co captain was so nice and accommodating. It is hard to find the old time elegance and formality like that in nyc or any city, and it def had refined elegance. We will add it to our dinner rotation, since we have been there for other meals in Bemelmans and the brunch, but now will come back often for dinner as well.
A little pretentious until the staff started to relax during the service, but i’m Not the one who should be working to make the staff comfortable!
The food was outstanding and the service was excellent. We were in a rush to see an 8:00 show and the restaurant made sure to have our meals prepared in a timely manor.
Both the food and service were great. The attention to detail was amazing.
Excelente comida y selección del menu
A New York classic, everything is exceptionally well done. Wonderful service, beautiful room
Excellence in preparation of food, portions, service, and atmosphere. It was a treat. Thank you to the serving staff!
A classic spoil yourself top shelf experience - gorgeous venue and ambience, wonderful food range and quality, and classy service. Not for everyday (unless you have lots of money) but a wonderful experience of occasion.
A totally elegant and beautiful restaurant in a lively and interesting atmosphere. The food was delicious, the service impeccable, and the ambiance perfect.
Great service, nice wine list...food quality was the consistency of banquet food at an average Marriott. So disappointing.
I'm a food editor by day and I've been to most of NYC's most iconic restaurants. That being said, I just don't understand the hype surrounding The Carlyle. Service was ridiculously slow (took nearly 15 minutes to get seated) and the food tasted bland and uninspired (if you're going to serve truffle mashed potatoes, please, for the love of God, put truffles in it). While the decor was beautiful and classic UES, it's not enough to justify a $400 bill. Very disappointing experience and your money can be better spent elsewhere.
The service was not rushed, the waiter came over a few times to make sure every thing was perfect. The scallops were outstanding, the dessert an apple flan, we had asked to have it split, when it came to the table a large portion of ice cream sat on top. Quite delicious.
Lunch was definitely expensive! The appetizers for two plus one desert ,two gasses of wine, two cups of coffee came to 150 dollars with tip. the elegant ambiance and excellent caring service made it worth while!
Once we got seated it was wonderful. Nobody seemed to know where we should go to be seated. Had no idea where the the host was. I had to physically walked through the restaurant and ask several people
Still the best. No other venue delivers the classic New York experience like the Carlyle. I have been coming for thirty years and the dining room is still one of my favorite locations anywhere in the world. Delicious, gracious and everyone always is impressed with the food and service.
Great service, beautiful atmosphere, perfectly prepared food in an exquisite setting
Charles was an amazing waiter. We will ask for him again when we come back
