Carl's Tavern Ratings and Reviews
We chose Carls while in Steamboat mainly because they take reservations for Super Bowl Sunday. The reservation required a 75$ pp minimum charge. Some thought this was a put off but I knew that would be no problem for us for ~4 hours of dining, drinking and enjoying the large group excitement of watching the game. Wasn't disappointed at all. Great atmosphere with large screens everywhere. Service was perfect. Interesting menu - only wish I had a chance to try some of the other sandwiches/ entrees. We had the burgers, they were very good but in retrospect, I can get a good burger many places. Shoulda tried something different; I'm pretty confident I would have enjoyed anything on the menu. The highlight for us were the crab cakes we had early on - nicely crusted with good proportions of breading/meat - delicious. Hopefully, we'll return to Steam Boat and if so, we'll return to Carls.
This is an annual stop on our trip to Steamboat Springs. We ran into issues of being out of menu items and poor seating last year as well as soup coming out after the entree in the past. We love the location, several menu items and our earlier experiences so we gave it one last try. This year was another bust. We were greeted and then waited as the host/hostess tried to figure out a table configuration for my husband and I... oh no, not again! This year was worse. We were put in the back corner behind a table of 10 against a wall. We asked to move the table out and they said there were other tables being moved into the area. We ordered the special Fried Chicken and our waiter then informed us that they were out (supply management... it was only 7:30pm). I ended up ordering the amazing Crispy Brussel Leaves and a Tavern Salad. Here's the cake - I ordered the blue cheese dressing on the side. It was warm and did not taste good. I asked for the citrus vinaigrette AND then was told I would be charged .50¢! OK, it is only .50¢ but seriously, the first dressing was bad. We've moved on and will branch out next year. Good luck in finding your new wings under the new management.
Visiting from out of town, a local recommended Carl’s for game watching. We are huge Falcons fans and wanted a fun place to watch the playoff game. Carl’s staff completely hooked us up — gave us a booth with the perfect TV angle and did not rush us so we could stay for the entire game. We had apps, dinner, drinks and dessert. Food was fantastic, and the staff was awesome. We had our two kids with us, and thought it was very family friendly too.
We chose Carl's because of its reliable casual food and convenient location. All 5 of us enjoyed some variation on a burger and I also had a salad....all of which were very generous portions and done to order. Under new ownership, the service has improved substantially, though some of my favorite menu items have disappeared. The biggest problem for me is always the noise. We arrived at 8pm and the noise level was so high we had trouble talking across the table. It was slightly better by the time we left.
We were seated at a very comfortable high top table in the back. The noise level was fine where we were seated. When we left the front of the restaurant was loud and bustling. We would come back for the dirty business and cornbread appetizers. The stew was delicious, the Reuben not special. Double black diamond burgers were massive. Overall a fun night.
We have been to Carl’s many times over the years. It’s usually one of my favorites. We were a little disappointed this time. Menu is much more limited and the food wasn’t as good as usual. Miss the vegetarian option they always had.
The salmon had too much sauce on it which drowned out the salmon.
Steak was average.
We went to Carl's to watch an out-of-town football game. The staff was very accommodating with regard to putting the game up on a screen that we could all see. We sat there for over three hours before we were told that there were other reservations that needed the table. The staff was again super great about setting up a space for us to continue to watch the game.
Carl's is my first choice for lunch or to watch a game in Steamboat.
I have always loved Carl’s and always ate Sunday chicken which was on the menu daily. However, new ownership took over and now they only have fried chicken on Sunday. So after years of their chicken I had to order something else. Bring back fried chicken every day PLEASE.
Our adult family of 6 spent our ‘last supper’ in Steamboat Springs at Carl’s Tavern. Our reservation was for 8PM, we arrived 15 min early and were sitting at our table by 7:55PM on a very busy Friday night (great coordination by the host staff!). We had crab cakes and corn bread for appetizers and both were excellent (yep, we can see why Carl’s was voted best corn bread for 2017!). We had a mix of meals, from burgers to salmon to THE BEST RUEBEN that I have ever tasted. We had planned on sharing desserts but the food was so good that we finished our meals and were too full to eat a single morsel more. Wait staff was friendly and energetic- full of smiles and great recommendations (loved the Naughty Nordsmen cocktail). Overall, an excellent dining event that topped off an amazing week of skiing and snowmobiling at Steamboat Springs.
We had dinner at Carl’s. It was pretty crowded and a bit noisy. Good food though. We tried the cornbread, home made pimento cheese and crab cakes. They were good not great. My sons chicken was tasty but a little dry. The waiter had a large table he was waiting on and ignored us until I asked for another waiter. Then we got all kinds of attention. Overall a good experience though.
As always Carl’s doesn’t be disappoint. The staff and food are always consistently solid and you always feel like you had a good experience at a fair price. We will keep returning. Wings rock, burgers rock, Brussels are unique and delicious and solid variety of other options.
Usually Carl’s does not disappoint so we think they were just way off for the night. We were hurried through our ordering and dinner which became annoying. The chicken was dry, the mashed potatoes were not cooked right. The ribs didn’t have a ton of flavor. Not a great night.
We were seated at a table in the back by the high chairs and service station. There were plenty of tables open and we had reservations so not sure why such a bad spot. They’ve taken dishes off of the menu that were favorites. Music speakers were loud right behind our head. Disappointing experience - we have really enjoyed carls in the past.
Good, cheerful service (thank you, Genevieve), tasty cocktails, great burgers and fries, and reliable home-style entrees (pot roast, meatloaf, etc.). The Zirkel burger in particular, with avocado, pimento cheese, bacon, tomato and pickles, was decadently satisfying. Great appetizers, including the aforementioned pimento cheese, deviled eggs, and crispy Brussels sprouts with Parmesan. Nice whisky list, too.
Carl's has gone downhill. It used to be a good place to go for bar food with some healthier options. Now, the menu is dumbed-down. There are no healthy options- the trout was just a big ol filet drenched in butter. The kids menu is bizarrely the other extreme- full of healthy options like salad that most kids wont eat. What happened, Carl?
We miss the old Carl's tavern - the menu has shrunk significantly and things have clearly changed. Perhaps once the new ownership hits their stride with that concept things will improve -- nothing was bad, mind you, but there are far fewer options and the place is missing some of it's old charm.
