Carl's Tavern Ratings and Reviews
Carl's has gone downhill. It used to be a good place to go for bar food with some healthier options. Now, the menu is dumbed-down. There are no healthy options- the trout was just a big ol filet drenched in butter. The kids menu is bizarrely the other extreme- full of healthy options like salad that most kids wont eat. What happened, Carl?
We miss the old Carl's tavern - the menu has shrunk significantly and things have clearly changed. Perhaps once the new ownership hits their stride with that concept things will improve -- nothing was bad, mind you, but there are far fewer options and the place is missing some of it's old charm.
Overall this was a great little place to grab a casual, but tasty meal! (And great drinks)
I was just disappointed because the menu online differed from the one in the restaurant.
I was really looking forward to a Lamb Burger there...but it was sadly not on the menu...so overall it put a damper on my visit.
Also the kids menu was really lacking....
My husband really enjoyed his burger though!
My wife had the steak salad, but it came out unsliced, without a steak knife and very poorly presented. Also the salad dressing / chimichurri came out very oily and in a cup on the side – the salad was undressed.
My friend ordered the crab cakes which came out lukewarm. She thoroughly enjoyed the asparagus dish.
We ordered the carrot dish to share at the table and the flavor was good, except the carrots weren't blanched before cooking in the sauce, so they were mostly uncooked.
My burger was excellent, a tad undercooked for medium-rare, but very tasty. My fries were room temp, but crispy.
We met Scott (owner) who was quite charming and hospitable. He was keen to receive feedback and suggestions since we're locals. Our server seemed to be new to waiting tables and kind of aloof. The female manager that came to speak with us was attentive, professional and explained that Scott agreed some of our suggestions about the aforementioned dishes.
As locals, we will be back, and look forward to continued improvement.
Each time I eat at Carls, I receive a different response as to whether the fryers have cross-contamination regarding being gluten free. Sometimes they tell me that they use a dedicated fryer to keep the fries and other items gluten-free, and other times they tell me that chicken tenders are fried in both fryers.
Recommend a reservation during peak hours. Food was excellent. Service was the downer. Tried to order appetizers and delay dinner so that we wouldn't get both together. Despite us trying, the waiter and/or kitchen STILL brought both out within a few minutes of each other. I guess a pet peeve of mine. Kevin our waiter was too busy and couldn't remember items we asked for. Water refills were sparse. Despite the service and timing of our meal it was still worth the evening.
I cannot say enough good things about this place. For the exception of getting sat 15 minutes or so after our reservation everything about this place was fabulous from the food to the drinks to the server! We had a party of seven and everybody cleared their plate. The food is awesome! I absolutely love the veggie plate! We visit steamboat about once a year and we always make it a point to eat at this restaurant. The only thing I would say that needs improvement about this establishment is the hosts/hostesses. They seemed a little frazzled when I called and also frazzled trying to get our table together.
We go to Carl's every time we are in Steamboat so my overall score was higher than this individual score. This visit wasn't as good as usual. Our order wasn't correct and our server disappeared for a long period of time so we went ahead and ate anyway. A little disappointing this time.
The experience was just ok. Waiter was attentive. Food selection was ok, limited mainly by price. I just couldn't bring myself to pay $25 for shrimp & grits that I could get at a high end restaurant in Denver for $15. Settled for the chicken club which was so so. A note to staff: don't suggest cutting the crusts off the Texas toast grill cheese on the kids menu ("we'll even cut the crusts off for you") if it's going to be an issue. Waiter told us "the kitchen doesn't like to do it, and I'll try if I have time. Otherwise, I'll bring you a big knife".
We book Carl's every year when we come to Steamboat but this trip was disappointing. We got seated promptly at our reservation time but they seemed under-staffed, waiter had too many tables, slow to clear tables. Food was ok, not great and the steak were burnt Disappointing experience this time.
The place felt disorganized. Our waitress was serving a large portion of the restaurant on her own so it was difficult to get her attention. We had to walk up to the bar to get drinks. The food was fine but there was also a sewage smell in the Antler Room which made it less appetizing.
We ate at Carl's on a Thursday night and the place was packed. Only downside was we were sat next to the kitchen, the bar, and with a 65" TV directly above our heads. The service and food were good. The only knock on the food was the Rainbow Trout which was great came with somewhere around 4 pounds of risotto. Who can eat that much? Just a waste and unnecessary.
