Cardwell's at the Plaza Ratings and Reviews
Very impressed with the ease of making a reservation using Open Table for this restaurant. We especially like the fact that the restaurant read the reservation ahead of time and reserved a booth that we requested. It made our special occasion even more memorable.
We dine at Cardwell's on the Plaza a couple of times a month. The food is very good, the service is also very good. When it is crowded, the noise level is tolerable for conversation, but at off peak hours (half empty or more) it is quiet, and conversation is very easy. It is always a pleasant experience to dine there.
Our server was so rude as to make us consider eating at the other post-movie rest. in the mall- in the future. Not only did the waiter not return any pleasantry or greeting. He didn't ask if were finished before removing plates. He did not offer us dessert, after dinner drinks or coffee. (A lost of probably $50 for the rest.) He seldom made eye contact, etc. Never offered refills. Threw the check down en route (thought the rest. was sparsely populated.)
Could the service please match the food?
If you are heading to Plaza Frontenac this is going to be a solid choice. With that said it's no longer a place I would go out of my way to dine. It's simply just OK. The menu is kinda boring and the decor is badly in need of a facelift/update. One bright spot is that the service there is always very good. I hate to be such a buzz kill but there are just better choices in the area now and Cardwell's would be wise to play a little catch up.
My husband & I frequently dine at this restaurant. However, we always sit at the bar when it's just the two of us because we know we will receive great service. This time we had two other people with us, so we ate at a table for four. As usual, the service was horrible! Terrible service is unfortunately the trend at this restaurant unless you eat at the bar. I believe from now on we will expolore other restaurant options if our party is larger than the two. It's unfortunate we must experience terrible service at a restaurant we love so much. The food is always outstanding! We love the local & seasonal additions to the menu.
In a nutshell if your party is larger than two I recommend you go somewhere else for dinner. You won't be pleased with the service.
What a disappointment. Have dined at Cardwell's since its inception and although I only go one or two times a year, I have always considered it to be excellent. Creative menu, professional wait staff and food that is outstanding. Not this time. Not even close.
When we arrived and our party of 4 asked to sit outside we were told to sit anywhere we wanted. There was a table meant to hold 4, but we had to pull up our own chairs so that all 4 of us could sit there. Not the end of the world. The table was mostly clean, except for some liquid and a few crumbs. That was never cleaned off.
We ordered drinks and 2 of the 4 were not properly prepared (dirty martinis with zero dirt). Appetizers came before bread, which we had to request. We should not have bothered as the bread served was dry and clearly not fresh. It may have been baked that day, but it would have been before the rooster crowed. Two of us ordered the tuna tar tare and it was horrible. Tuna was fishy tasting with an overpowering lemon flavor in the background. Maybe because they knew the fish was bad and they were trying to cover the taste? Who knows? It was quickly and courteously replaced with cucumber soup, which was excellent. Main courses included a pizza which was good, salmon which was good, but was served with room temperature (not hot) mashed potatoes, pasta with seafood, which was mediocre and grilled shrimp, which while good, were pricey. I mention this because three of the four of us heard the waiter ask my wife if 5 shrimp would be okay. The dish was described as having only 3 shrimp and that was what was served. So cannot totally fault them on that. Carrot cake dessert was excellent.
No visits from managers to ask if all was well, much less because we had sent back drinks and appetizers.
Sad to say we all agreed we will be slow to return.
Traveled to St. Louis from out-of-town with two teens and came directly to Cardwell's before checking into our hotel as it was later on a Sunday and we had already grabbed the last dinner reservation. The front of the restaurant was more formal with tablecloth covered tables, while the back of the restaurant was more casual in appearance with booths and wooden tables and chairs. An attractive bar was between these 2 areas and to one side.
Our waitress was friendly and attentive and the food was very tasty. We did order more casual fare....burger, pizza and stir fry.
Consistently excellent service and food. Alcoves great for parties of 6. Very sad that their (vegetarian) French onion soup is no longer on the menu. Was one of my favorites and a signature dish. Hoping they will add a vegetarian soup to the menu to fill the void. Still there is a large and varied menu and most will find something they really like.
We were disappointed with our server. He was not attentive and seemed very unhappy. He was so evasive I got up and tried to summon him. After no luck I got up and found the ice tea in the bus station and brought the pitcher to pour for us. The menu prices are higher and the value is not worth it. We used to love to dine for our monthly lunch but, no more.
