The Inn is a wonderful historic building on the water. There were several things that were disappointing. The lobby area is wonderful, but there was no fire in the fireplace even though it was a very chilly evening. There was no one to greet guests in the lobby. We walked into the dining area, and again there was no one there. My guest and I seated ourselves, and it was at least 5 minutes before a waitperson brought us beverages. We ordered appetizers to begin with, but they showed up at the same time as our full meal. Waited at least 30 minutes with no food at all. The food was good, and well presented. Without the ambience of this beautiful 1907 building, it would not have been worth the lack of service to eat there.

Food service was very slow. Dinner took long enough that we were impatient. Ordered one dessert and waited 25 minutes for it. Food was very good except that the mussels/clams were partially dry and cold

Captain Whidbey is a very special place that can’t be missed when you’re on Whidbey Island. Dating from 1907, this rustic and comfy log inn has a fabulous setting under tall trees at the edge of Penn Cove. Recently under new management, the service is great and the food is quite good. My apple crisp dessert was impossible to cut and dried out, but the macaroni and cheese with crab was good. The Madrona Margarita was great! We enjoyed a fun family meal while the moon shown down on the cove.

We had visited a few years ago and had a very bad experience. We had heard it was under new ownership so decided to give it a second try. This proved to be a MUCH better experience. The food was good, although a little over priced for what we got. I had the $14 Madrona Margarita from the bar that was tasty, but weak and WAY over priced.
The service was great, friendly and efficient staff.
Great place for tourists since the Inn has great island ambiance.
We'll be back for our next special occasion.

Management at the Inn is doing what they said they would do, including making the Inn attractive for local residents. I challenge locals to sample what the Inn is today, and imagine what it will be by summer!

Unique Historic building with good service and food that is good, if not outstanding. Our server was very good, despite a heavier than usual number of guests. It is not gourmet, but good Nowrthwest fare with our salmon done to request (barely warmed).

When we entered, the greeter acted aa though we were speaking a foreign language when we asked where the wheelchair ramp was. She didn't know! Come to find out, it was so steep that two men could not push this small wheelchair up the ramp. We had to "walk" our friend up the front stairs...very difficult, especially in a pouring rain! A downright hostile atmosphere to people thus disabled. We hope you have registered plans with the appropriate government office to come into compliance with the ADA requirements.

Then our waiter Sam began to make our evening better with excellent drinks, excellent service and very nice food. Your GF markings on the menu were very helpful because my husband has celiac disease.

My apologies. I first sent this review with the wrong name of our waiter: it was Sam, not George.

This was disappointing! I had made a reservation well in advance to be seated at a window table to enjoy the view. When we arrived, there was no one to greet us and a server told us to sit any where. There were no window tables left, so we chose a quiet table in the corner. The food was nothing out of the ordinary. Service was fairly good. Not sure if I would return anytime soon!

First time with new ownership; had not been there for years. The menu is very limited (dinner). The only odd thing was the Cioppino. It was solid tomato sauce, thick. Thought maybe they used the Shakshuka from brunch? Had no broth, no vegetable, no herb. Mussels were excellent. Charcuterie platter was okay, nothing special. No homemade sausage as menu described and all was standard deli meat.

We'll check back soon to see how it's going. Diana served us in the bar and she was terrific.

stayed in the Inn and wanted a quiet patio dinner. Service was poor, food came with other than original waiter, we had to ask for bread that came with shell fish dish, then never seen waiter again until final bill.
Patio seating available looked nice but our table was next to walkway to waiter order desk and opposite from food prep. Wood plank porch noise was excessive as waiters walked back in forth between stations. I realize the rustic setting is the draw but the waiters should be aware of the noise they cause. The shellfish mussels and clams were over cooked and cold. Overall I wouldn't go back or recommend dining there.

The hotel and restaurant are under new ownership since the last time we visited and we were very impressed with the difference. The service was outstanding. We were seated at a beautiful outdoor table with a great view of Penn Cove. There was live music (I guess it's every Thursday night) which was a nice feature. The food was excellent. The owner even came by to see how we were doing and to tell us of his plans to improve the hotel. Highly recommended for anyone spending some time on Whidbey Island.

Food quite good, although some entrees a little high priced. Happy hour menu great, and we highly recommend the burger. 100 year old inn built out of Madrona logs - great ambiance and spectacular view. New owners are returning it to its previous splendor. Will come again, and try their other menus, like weekend brunch.

Second try under the new ownership. First for drinks on the deck. Terrible experience, 45 mins to take our drink order, downhill from there. Last experience lunch. Service was so-so, different wait staff thru out. Food not cooked to order. Just not up to industry standards. I'm local and would be a regular, if you can pull it all together.

We heard from a friend that there was a new chef and of their positive experience.
As locals it's always nice to discover a 'gem' tucked away for special occasions, and this is one of those finds.

However, we booked through 'open table' and when we came to the Inn were amazed to see the parking was packed and overflowing. Unbeknownst to us, the Inn was hosing a community 'open house' to introduce new owners and kitchen to the 'hood'. Therefore my rating and comments are reflective of an unusual situation for dining at the Inn. I perceive the setting would be typically quieter and more intimate than our experience. None the less, the staff was attentive, meal delicious, and setting superb. Our suggestion, call as well as book through Open Table to confirm use of Inn on your chosen date.

This review is written with the knowledge that the Inn has recently changed hands and is currently in a state of major transition: Our greeter was super friendly and helpful. Our waitress was very friendly and accommodating, outstanding overall! The main course of Penn Cove Mussels and Clams in a rich broth was delicious. Unfortunately, the starter salads had almost no dressing, and were sparse in content and creativity for the price, pretty disappointing. We were offered (and enthusiastically ordered) a special dessert from the Inn's garden, a rhubarb-strawberry cobbler, with organic rhubarb they had picked the same day. Instead we were given a mixed berry cobbler that was ultra sweet, with very little topping for a cobbler, and tasted like it had been purchased from a restaurant vendor rather than having been made at the Inn's kitchen. It was OK, but we were not told that there was no more of the strawberry-rhubarb cobbler, nor were we given an opportunity to change our order. We don't like to make a fuss, so we ate the cobbler, said nothing, and left feeling less than fully satisfied. The flourless chocolate cake was tasty and above average. This is a charming Inn, rich in atmosphere and tradition, and the staff we encountered were all extremely nice. We are excited that the Inn has acquired new ownership with apparent plans to make it into a small boutique hotel. The place could use refurbishing, but the current traditional charm is also appealing, and it is important that the traditional charm not be ruined by the tendency of modern boutique hotels to make themselves into cookie-cutter airport-style look-alikes. For now, the kitchen is what needs the most attention. Regardless of the time or effort it takes to spruce the place up, without a good kitchen the odds of long term success are limited. We will definitely return, with the hope that the long tradition this Inn enjoys will be honored and improved upon.
