Captain Bill's - Middleton Ratings and Reviews
We have always enjoyed the food at Captain Bills, especially the excellent clam chowder.
Unfortunately, it was very cold in the restaurant. We understand that the temps outside made it difficult for the heat to keep up but it really did negatively impact our experience.
We had 6:30 reservations. We arrived early and registered. At 6:45 they said they were still working on our table for 3. We had the same problem last year. We then were seated but had to wait for water as Capt. Bill’s temporarily ran out of H20 glasses. Last year they ran out of champagne glasses for awhile. We had an excellent waiter (Steve) who did a great job. Every year we have steak and lobster. This year was no different . The steaks were very good but the lobster arrived cold. It seems they are not well-prepared to handle crowds which is surprising considering their lengthy history.
Didn't like our table. When I asked to be seated by the window. I was told those tables were reserved. An hour plus later. Those tables were still open. Prime rib was less than average flavor. Lots of excess fat and Grisel. Salads were just lettuce. No ranch. Baked potato did not have any options besides butter and sour cream. Recommend chives cheese bacon bits. Mmmmm
Would not visit again
We had not been to Captain Bills for a few years but for no particular reason. We were not disappointed with food or atmosphere. It is decorated very well for the holidays. Food was good, we had fish and the cold slaw was OK but very skimpy. It was pretty noisy. Our waitress was good but we felt a bit hurried.
I would return but likely in summer and sit outside.
My Champagne Scallops we’re prepared perfectly as were the Fish Taco’s my brother had and the Coconut Shrimp with Honey Mustard dipping sauce as the appetizer was amazing as always. Very friendly service from our server and bartender. This was a great birthday dinner!
Captain Bills has a great happy hour for appetizers. We came for happy hour and the afruday fish fry. The fried haddock was great, but we saw some plates come out with broiled fish that we would love to try on a return visit. This was not the place to catch up with an old friend; there is so sound insulation and we couldn't hear each other or server without almost shouting.
Overall experience was great and once in the restaurant you feel right at home. The only complaint is exterior needs better lighting of entrance to parking lot and the lighting in parking lot/ entrance to restaurant. The entrance could use a canopy. We definitely be back for another great meal and fun with friends😊
Requested tenderloin and lobster as my husband's birthday dinner. Received tuffer top sirloin and lobster. Did not know this change was made until we received the bill. Steak tasty but not requested tenderness. Change of steak should of been brought to our attention prior to order prepared.
My crab cakes were good, as was the salad.
Just a little disappointed my husband didn'the get what he was looking forward to.
Absolutely terrible. My lobster was cold and the the crab knuckle was salty, leading me to believe that it was injected with a solution to increase it's weight. Our waitress appeared to be under the influence of something. We did receive a 50% discount on our bill, but honestly that is not enough for me to try the restaurant again. I was extremely disappointed.
The food is great. The service is awful. The servers are all over the place and dont seem to have a designated area to serve. I have used Open Table twice to make reservations. I dont think Captain Bill’s checks them. This past Friday i requested a specific table. When we got there they hadn’t checked the reservation and the table wasn’t ready. They hurried to get the table set and set it for 4 but there were 5 of us as listed in the reservation. My husband had to wait too long for them to bring a chair and set a place for him, then we had to wait forever for someone to take our drink order. Everyone there is real nice but they really drop the ball on service. The only reason we go every Friday is because that’s where my mom wants to go. She hates the service too but she loves their fish fry and looking out at the lake.
The food overall was very good, to outstanding. Calamari was outstanding. The clam chowder is claimed to be "world famous", but it turned out to be a savory potato soup with no clams to speak of. Entrees ordered included Pan Fried Walleye, Surfing Salmon, Dragon Fire Salmon and Scallops. The Dragon Fire Salmon was the best of these with a unique sauce although only a little "fire". The rest were very good but not exceptional. Service was excellent though our waiter was unaware of changing beer and wine options so we had to reorder a couple of times. All in all a very satisfactory experience.
Were celebrating our first wedding anniversary- It took at least 5 -10 minutes to be greeted at the hostess stand... Eventually got seated at a table outside, where we seat for 17 minutes (we kept track) without a single server acknowledging us or coming up to our table. We watched tables get seated after us and served immediately. We ended up leaving without even being brought waters due to the horrible inattentive service.
We are regulars for Friday night fish fry. The food is always great but the service varies The servers are running all over the place and don't seem to have a designated area they are responsible for. Sometimes we are waited on promptly and other times we have to wait long tine to be noticed.
The food was so good we went back the next day to have dinner again! We sat on the lake, night one, which was pretty (may want to take some bug spray!). The inside was busy and extremely loud the second night but the food was great!!! I'd say they need more wait staff, although it could have been our server because we had the same server both nights and she was MIA a lot.
The fish, veggies and salad were fresh and done perfectly. (Of course the dips are to die for.) The seating on the deck is perfect for summer. The staff is friendly and efficient. Love this place. (Be sure to make a reservation if you are dining on the weekends.)
Worst service we've experienced. Drinks took 15 minutes plus to arrive. Our server was non existent. Our soup arrived before the appetizer. Our entrees were lukewarm. The crab cakes were large but tasteless. No crab flavor. The clam chowder was very good with lots of clams and potatoes. Too bad it was cold. The sea bass special was fine as was the coconut shrimp. Neither dish was hot. All food was served by the bus staff. Not sure where the waitress was because they were not busy. When she finally showed up with the check she took her time in processing.
Yelp reviews confirm service issues are a problem. Should have read them before making reservation. The only good thing is my friends get to say "I told you so". They all stopped going long ago.
This restaurant is not worthy of open table destinations.
Service was "ok", seemed like our server paid more attention to larger tables than our table of 2. Maybe because we had a gift certificate, and she thought we might not tip correctly(we tipped plenty). It wasn't really busy, but it took 40 min to get our food. The coconut shrimp was good. I had the 2- 5oz tenderloins, and right when the server put the plate down I knew it was over cooked. It was. I didn't say anything until the end because I didn't want to wait longer for a new meal. The steak was dry but still tender enough to get through. You would think for $32 the meal would be done correctly. I told the server and she was apologetic. Old fashions saved the day. Those were perfect.
