We found Captain Bills last year and are so grateful to return anytime we are in town! The bar is great...the food is great...the restaurant is nicely decorated and the views and location are incredible. Did I mention the amazing food and best service? Check it out! You will be glad you did!
Five of us attended for an early Friday birthday dinner. Service was great, and attention to our not yet two year old was great. We all had a great time.
We have been to Captain Bill's many times in the past. We feel that the food quality has dropped and the service was less than expected. We have always loved the atmosphere and always enjoyed the ambiance. This time though, the food was a distraction to those things...
Pretty nice dining experience 7pm fri not too busy already seated the other couple so when we arrived he said that I didn't have a reservation under my name but he could seat us right away.. I went to restroom then waited for my husband to park, by then our friends came up to us and said they had the table under my name! Weird. why didn't the host tell me that? they were on the quiet side of the room near a window. I really wanted to sit by the fire but since they were already seated we just stayed put. Kept my coat on because it was so cold. you shouldn't have to wear your coat in a nice restaurant. Food was good. Would appreciate a more generous serving of chowder for the money
The fish fry was a good deal, but the drinks were overpriced. The atmosphere was good. Sit by the fireplace!
Haven't been here for a while. The musty smell when we opened the door should have been a warning to leave at that point. The salads were limp and room temperature. Bread tasteless; flavored butter awful. One entree, bluegiil special, was OK at best though mostly breading. The other, crabcake, was truly awful. Waitress outstanding. Too bad food didn't match up.
We were there for Valentines Day. We were sat right away, but then we sat for 15 minutes before the server came to the table. I realize it was a busy day, but our server got way too many tables at once. That was management fault. My steaknwas overcooked with no flavor. No reason to send it back, i would of had to wait even longer. They ran out of glasses and were serving drinks in plastic cups. We paid way too much to have our drink in a clear plastic cup. I felt sorry for tables that sat aftter us. One table next to us waited 20 minutes before anyone stopped by the table. Both managers walked by that table at least 20 times. We wanted to love this place. Many people who were in our section left unhappy. Management didnt bother to stop by and check on any tables. I am sure many of us will not return.
Valentines Day dinner was fantastic. We got there on time for our reservation but they asked us if we wanted to have a drink at the bar first. We said yes and they said tell us when you're ready and we'll take you to your table. So friendly and accomodating. We sat at a very private and quiet table and our waitress was there immediately. She was very happy and talkative. Obviously she enjoys her job. Our food was ordered and came very fast. The steak and lobster special was perfect. Our chocolate lava cake with chocolate dipped strawberries on the side was just the special dessert to finish our night. My fiance asked if I would like to come again and I immediately said yes!
Good main course dinner. The Bruschetta appetizer was overdone with balsamic vinagrette. Clam chowder was amazing. Rich with large chunks. Scallops were also very very tasty!
Unbelievably low price for Valentine's Day Dinner special for two: 6 oz filet, 6 oz lobster tail, Shrimp-adorned salad, champagne, chocolate lava desert; all for $60, WOW! Incidentally, very favorably impressed by our waitress.
We were seated at our table in a timely manner and then waited 25 minutes before a waitress even acknowledg'd us. We were never offered refills on our beverages. We asked for more bread and never received it. Our entrees were luke warm to cold in temperature the food did taste good.
Free champagne with supposed to be included with our dinner we never received it. Our dessert was almost dropped on the table she turned away so quickly when delivering
If it weren't for the good food and unique dining experience in the Madison area we would never go back - the service is generally horrible. We've been here 6-7 times and probably 4 of those times we had really bad experiences with the service. We just went for Valentine's day. Made reservations for 630pm. Due to it being busy we sat for 15min -fine- but the host started randomly seating people seating people that came in after us with no reservations and then two couples with 7pm reservations. Why offer reservations??? Then we heard some complaints from a table about a long wait after getting seated. We left after seeing that.
Your special for Valentine's Day was a great surprise. I spread the word.
We had the Valentines Day special of steak and lobster. It was a great value and the food was prepared beautifully. Not very busy on the Saturday night before Val day, so the service was prompt but not rushed.
Always a reliable spot for a nice dinner.

Visited during restaurant week. While the restaurant was busy, the waitress was pleasant and attended to our group perfectly.
I visited Captain Bill's last Friday night. As wecwalked in with my 96 and 95 year old parents I asked if we could sit either in the bar or the main dining room. The host said no and seated us in a small corner with a view of a curtain. Over half the dining room was still available at 5:15 so I didn't see why we could not sit elsewhere. It took forever for the waitress to wait on us and when she didn't bring us bread there weren't enough rolls for each person at the table. She was a pleasant waitress but the order was goofed up. We had to wait forever for the bill and then she gave us a bill from somebody else's table. When she finally got the bill straightened out she took off with the credit cards for at least 10 minutes. The clam chowder was quite good as were the salomon meals. My dad had a New York strip which was very fatty and he only ate about half of it. We've been here before with better service and better food. I guess it gets complicated with restaurant week that's why we went early.
My tenderloin was cooked well, but no seasoning and pretty tasteless. The lobster tail was completely overcooked and leathery, and the butter tasted like an old tire. I had to send the whole thing back.
First time visit -restaurant week promotion. Busy night. We were seated timely but no one was assigned to be our server. After waiting about 20 minutes we had to get up and request service. After they assigned a server to our table, we received quality service and the food was exceptional. We feel this was just an unintentional oversight and would return again sometime in the future - perhaps during warmer weather. It a pretty long drive from Edgerton so most likely a special occasion .
Had a great meal for restaurant week. It was busy so our seating wasn't particularly wonderful. But food was great, arrived quickly and service was good.
We went to Captain Bill's for restaurant week. I would say our experience was 50/50. Some of the stuff was great, like my cosmo and clam chowder, and my date's steak. The other half, I would say was just ok. I wouldn't rush back there for a meal, but I might go for happy hour to have another one of the martini's!
We came for restaurant week. Of course we made a reservation and we were seated promptly. Service was friendly and attentive even on this busier then usual night. Our table of four enjoyed every bite. The only complaint was it was chilly for the two sitting next to the window. 😊
Very disappointing both service and food. Service was slow on a slow Tuesday. This was during restaurant week! Food was barely warm when received. After two bites steak was cold but lobster was cold to start! Garlic mashed potatoes? Cold and tasteless! Captain Bill won’t be seeing us again? Food must have been cooked the week before.
I am fortunate to dine out quite often. This experience was by far one of the worst in a long time. Our waitress was going to do the bare minimum to get by and she sure did. Food was cold but she did not return to the table until she brought dessert! Never to check on quality of food, if we wanted another beverage, nothing. Also mixed up the desserts and bill and there were only two of us and it was not busy. Had 5:30 reservation. We brought our bill up to the front desk because we were not going to wait however long and did let them know how disappointing it was. I have always had good meals there before. The bill was adjusted and they apologized. I let places know when it is good far more often then it was bad.
It was great, we went for winter restaurant week and had live surf and turf. Love the lobster and fillet!
We have always enjoyed the food at Captain Bills, especially the excellent clam chowder.
Unfortunately, it was very cold in the restaurant. We understand that the temps outside made it difficult for the heat to keep up but it really did negatively impact our experience.
Room was cold. Several guest at our table ate with their coats on.
We ate there for New Year's Eve. The food was wonderful and the restaurant was decorated beautifully. Good service. We have eaten there many times before and always had the same experience. Good choice of gluten-free options as well.
Walleye was cold and mushy, very fishy tasting. Had reservation but nobody alerted us table was ready after checking in. New Years Eve so maybe just overbooked.
We had 6:30 reservations. We arrived early and registered. At 6:45 they said they were still working on our table for 3. We had the same problem last year. We then were seated but had to wait for water as Capt. Bill’s temporarily ran out of H20 glasses. Last year they ran out of champagne glasses for awhile. We had an excellent waiter (Steve) who did a great job. Every year we have steak and lobster. This year was no different . The steaks were very good but the lobster arrived cold. It seems they are not well-prepared to handle crowds which is surprising considering their lengthy history.
Didn't like our table. When I asked to be seated by the window. I was told those tables were reserved. An hour plus later. Those tables were still open. Prime rib was less than average flavor. Lots of excess fat and Grisel. Salads were just lettuce. No ranch. Baked potato did not have any options besides butter and sour cream. Recommend chives cheese bacon bits. Mmmmm

We had not been to Captain Bills for a few years but for no particular reason. We were not disappointed with food or atmosphere. It is decorated very well for the holidays. Food was good, we had fish and the cold slaw was OK but very skimpy. It was pretty noisy. Our waitress was good but we felt a bit hurried.
I would return but likely in summer and sit outside.
I love this place. Good food. The service was very nice and kind and very helpful. We were there to celebrate my birthday! I would come again for sure.
We went out with a couple of friends and enjoyed a nice night. The table was in the bar area so the noise level was louder than normal but we didn't mind. Service was great. Food was good. We have been there before and always enjoy our meal.
My Champagne Scallops we’re prepared perfectly as were the Fish Taco’s my brother had and the Coconut Shrimp with Honey Mustard dipping sauce as the appetizer was amazing as always. Very friendly service from our server and bartender. This was a great birthday dinner!

Captain Bills has a great happy hour for appetizers. We came for happy hour and the afruday fish fry. The fried haddock was great, but we saw some plates come out with broiled fish that we would love to try on a return visit. This was not the place to catch up with an old friend; there is so sound insulation and we couldn't hear each other or server without almost shouting.
