Captain Bill's - Middleton
Good, nice Valentine’s Day dinner
This is the worst experience I’ve had at a restaurant! Had reservations which were not honored as upon arrival, we were greeted by a grumpy employee who barked that “everyone had reservations”. Said employee did not ask for our name and redirected us to the bar. The bartenders were clearly overwhelmed and when asked about ingredients in a drink, the bartender responded by saying “this is not the night to ask me questions”. We were finally seated 40 minutes after our reservation time and were told “you may not have a server just yet”. Overall, save your money and go to Red Lobster. Better ambience, better food, and better value - unless you enjoy being barked at, ignored and paying too much for mediocre food.
My biggest complaint about Captain Bill’s is that it always seems like it’s cold in the restaurant, especially in the winter time. It was Valentine’s Day so it was super busy and louder than normal - usually they are on the ball and excellent.
Clearly understaffed, made a reservation but the person who came to help at the front door (which was unstaffed) didn't care in the slightest. Tried to seat people ahead of us despite us getting there first. Wife's food was good but my steak was undercooked and cold. Felt bad for the waitstaff as they were trying their best but whomever was in charge of staffing Valentine's Day clearly screwed up.
This restaurant is normally good on a non-holiday, definitely will not be back for holiday festivities though.
Rated lower because the reservation did not mean a thing. Very unorganized and they were not staffed for a rush on Valentines Day. From start to finish, it took over 2.5 hours for the dining experience. Most of that time waiting and waiting....for drinks, food, and refills. I will give them another try but it definitely won’t be on Valentines Day again.
We are regulars here throughout the years on holidays and enjoy the surf and turf, which we always order. Everything was fine, but when we asked about the champagne that came with the dinner, our waitress did not think this was provided...we left it that, knowing that the add in the newspaper (and historically) clearly said a glass of champagne came with the dinner.
We were at Captain Bill's on Valentine's Day. The place was hopping, but still the food and service were great.
We were there valentine's day evening and it was very busy. We were seated near the entrance which was very drafty and chilly. We ask for another table and ended up near the fireplace. Very nice! Our only complaint is that we had to ask three times for some ketchup.
We were celebrating my girlfriend’s new job and wound up, by chance, at our favorite table. The waitress was friendly and completely on top of things. Our food was delicious, including the chowder of course. Thank you so much!
We love Captain Bill's. In the summer, we always try to get a table outside. In the winter, there's the cozy fireplace.
We had a relaxed evening with friends. Enjoyed our meal and didn't feel rushed.
Captain Bill's is one of our favorite "Wisconsin Supper Clubs". The service, the quiet atmosphere, and the food are all always outstanding.
Food was good service was good for being short staffed.
Captain Bill's is a great place to dine. I love the coconut shrimp!
We had 4 people & all were happy.
It was absolutely delicious!! Perfectly cooked food!
Four of us dined during the January 2020 restaurant week. We had the New York strip, tenderloin, salmon, shrimp all entrees were delicious! The flourless chocolate cake was incredibly yummy.
The restaurant week special of surf and turf was very good . I wish I lived there I would go again this week and have it again
I ordered my steak medium rare and it was served medium well, very little pink. The server never stopped to ask how everything was until my husband had finished his meal. When we mentioned the over cooked steak he acted like he knew it wasn’t what I ordered but did nothing. No offer for another, no adjustment on the bill. He never even refilled our water. Very disappointed, we will not return.
The employees were arguing over who would work what station and having to help customers. Other tables received dinner rolls, we did not. The salmon was rather fishy tasting, we couldn't seem to get water refills or much other attention. We won't be going back.
We had a great meal during restaurant week, our server was very attentive and helpful. Clam chowder is fantastic!!
We went after a snow fall. The parking lot was solid ice and the outside lights were burned out. My husband was using his walker. The manager promised to walk us to the car which didn’t happen. He salted heavily which created water on top of the ice. The main dining room was not being used. The fire pit was being used. It was too cold to remove my coat to eat. I have been going to this restaurant since it was built. It has always been good. It needs a remodel with an adequate heating system. The food was good. It is definitely a summer restaurant
Please consider offering a 2 piece Friday Fish portion. Your portions are large and this time the fish was greasy. Leftovers didn’t heat up well. Would prefer a smaller portion option. Waiter was attentive. Christmas decor was very nice.
Service was slow. Food was great. I think the staff was overworked. They advertised a free lunch glass of Champagne with your New Year’s dinner, but you had to ask for it. To me that is under handed.
Our drinks, bread, and clam chowder we're wonderful. I had catfish, fried that came out in 6 huge lumps of fried dough. My son had the expensive fried walleye, which was so fishy tasting he didn't finish it, and I tried to but it just tasted terrible. I complained to the waiter but my son didn't want me to.
Friday night fish fry was a little pricey. My wife wanted a side salad and it was an additional $4.99 .Neither of us care for cole slaw so I subbed out the clam chowder which was very good but again at $4.99 a little pricey. We will probably come back again, but not on a friday night
Just a little Christmas dinner with 4 friends.
Great ambience, especially in the fire pit room. We all ate delicious we’ll-prepared food; some had coconut shrimp, salmon on a plank and petite tenderloin. We’ve all been here numerous times and always enjoy wonderfully delicious food!
All was enjoyable, we hadn't been there for several years, since we moved to Evansville from Middleton. We had a very nice time and will go back.
Great Food and environment. The staff was terrible. The lady who served us talked about herself waaaaay to much and offered her opinion for what to eat among many other personal things. When we did not ask for it. She was pushy and self serving. We were passing thru Madison and thought it would be a fantastic place to eat at. Which the food was very good but she was terrible.
Delicious fish (walleye) and service excellent and friendly
We have been there a bunch of times. Always been happy always been satisfied. Recommended to all her friends. But the only place around here that can get fresh oysters.
My wife, adult daughter, and I had a very pleasant dining experience. We arrived almost at opening time on a Sunday evening, so there were not a lot of folks there (more came by the time we left). The staff was attentive and provided useful suggestions (loved the oysters!). The food was very good - both the entrees and the appetizers. We were all too full to try the desserts!
Overall the food was good and our servers were nice but stretched very thin. I can't tell if it was just that night that was a problem or if this is a more frequent problem. We visited a few years ago and I don't recall any problems with service. Anyway, It took a lot longer than normal to place our orders and there were other diners near us that were very vocal about the service.
Hard working staff - they were understaffed but were so friendly it was fine.
We had a wonderful time. Service was great. Steak didn’t quite live up to expectations. All else was wonderful.
The food was good and the service great. The prices were not too bad either !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A little outdated. Food was ok but not what I was expecting based on feedback and photos on OpenTable. The scallops were gritty but the shrimp were really good.
Made a reservation online for my brother’s 30th birthday celebration. Showed up at the reservation time to find a printed sign on the door stating they were closed that day. Clearly they don’t care to sync up their closures with Open Table. What a lame experience.
Food was great and the view is awesome. I will definitely go back.
Cob webs on front door and first step in you see a plastic bucket of ice melt on August 27 was first sign on neglect and incompetence. That message was found in all phases.
We had a great time. The service was excellent, atmosphere great and the food was super.
I went to captain bills with my husband for our anniversary. They were not very busy and we were able to get a table outside. They had acoustic music which was a pleasant surprise. The atmosphere was great. The food ended up being amazing and it was fairly priced. Unfortunately our service was really slow. The waiter seemed like he might have been the manager or owner. He wore many hats (waiter, bartender, lighting tiki torches) and was running around very busy. But that meant that we got little attention. He was very nice when he did stop by, but he completely forgot to bring out soup before the meal. I think he did the same to the table next to us as I heard him bring out shrimp at the end of the meal and say “better late than never”. We weren’t in a hurry luckily because the meal took almost 2 hours. He took drinks off of our bill to apologize and again he was very nice. But we didn’t understand why another waiter could have helped instead as no one else seemed as busy as he was. Everything else was great and the food was amazing! We will go back but hopefully they will be better staffed.
