It was just okay nothing exciting old steakhouse with expensive items. I ordered the most expensive bone in Ribeye it was decent. Much better places in Madison to eat at. We ate here because it was one of the only places with availability on a busy Saturday night
Menu isn't overwhelmingly large...which I find appealing. Although the steaks and scallop entrees we had were great, the stars were the sides. Broccoli, mushrooms, brussel sprouts and mashed potatoes were excellent. Our service that night was also top notch. Pricey, of course, but it's on par with most steak houses.
My husband and I were out at UW - Madison for Parents Weekend and took our son there for a special night...it was a great experience...Clay, our server, couldn't have been nicer or more knowledgeable about both the food and drink menu...We will definitely return!!!
The food was very good - typical steakhouse fare. The ambiance was poor - very dated, austere and lackluster. The service was fine, but not overly welcoming when we arrived. I almost felt like we were an inconvenience If you are staying at the Hilton, then I would recommend the restaurant, because of the location and the food was tasty. However, with all of the great restaurants in Madison - I would chose another.
We are out of town guests and have been told that the chophouse is a place to go. So we went and it was just a sad experience. Our server was trying too hard. The ambiance reminds me of early 1990. The onion soup was plain and no flavor. I had the filet which was great but my partner had the strip and it was over seasoned. The mashed potatoes were just overly salty...wouldn't recommend to anyone...oh the manager came by but we had already finished...overall not good.
We had a wonderful 9th anniversary dinner. Server Logan spoiled us. We split the ribeye and shared the mushrooms and asparagus. Our starter of a cheese plate was having an early dessert. And, our dessert of espresso ice cream and chocolate port was a perfect finale to our evening.
We had not been to the chophouse in years--having children drove us to other dining options. But this being Restaurant Week (RW), we decided to try our old haunt. The tenderloin used to be to DIE for and I was in the mood for some steak. We arrived early for our 5:15 dinner time and practically had the place to ourselves. The work staff were very friendly, and with no one else to serve, were going out of their way to make our experience great. ( We like eating early then having the rest of the summer night to go to any number of Madison's outdoor terraces). Our RW choices were limited, but that is normal for what all places do. I chose the scampi, skirt steak and peach cobbler. Our waitperson, Rene, suggested adding crab legs to our fair and that was a perfect addition to our foods.
Lastly, our host suggested we have a special drink to go with our desserts. Once again, it was a great choice (see pict)
We both left saying to ourselves, "Why did we wait so long to come back?" and "When our we coming back and who can we bring with us?"

We went during Restaurant Week. It was nice to have attentive service that was not rushed. The two people in our group who ordered the pork entrée for lunch were a bit disappointed. They didn't think it was very good and was not exactly what they were expecting, given the description. All else was fantastic, including the other fish entrée. Antonio offered fantastic, friendly and professional service.
Superb salads, steaks were flavorful and perfectly cooked. Decent beer menu, terrific wine selections. Limited outdoor seating but pleasant atmosphere. Service was top notch. Would return anytime, and plan to soon. Only downside: limited vegetarian choices. But duh. It's a chophouse!
Excellent meal! Our filets were prepared perfectly. Order a half-size Chopped Salad before your entree and you will not be disappointed! We also tried the grilled asparagus, but prepared with the garlic and chili oil typically used with the broccoli. Again it was excellent! The homemade lavendar blueberry ice cream was a great way to end our meal. Logan, our server, was extremely attentive and knowledgeable.
We enjoyed the experience very much. The prime ribs were generous in size and very tasty. Very juicy and did not dry out before finishing. Fine dining and good food is a lost art these days, but the Capitol Chophouse was tops in both areas. I recommend this place highly.
We stayed at the Hilton and was attending a 1:00 performance at the Overture Center so the Chophouse seemed like a perfect choice for Mother's Day Brunch.
The host and waiter made the visit get off a slow start with seating us and getting our drinks. The food was very good and the ambiance was better than I even expected. For a small space (with one exit being right into the lobby), we felt like we were far away from the hotel. Upon finishing up our meal and needing to check out, the waiter was able to pass by our table numerous times without asking us how everything was or offering to get out check. My husband left to get us checked out and eventually I was left alone to sit and wait for the check. Finally when I sat some with credit card in hand, he offered to take care of paying for the meal. Surprising a big tip was already included in our check which was way more than he ever deserved.
We might go back again but hope to have a different host and waiter!
We've been twice in the past year and both times have had excellent waitstaff, but other than that there is nothing to recommend about it. The room is fairly sterile, the food bland and unremarkable. We tried dinner and we tried brunch (Mother's Day) and I think we will wait for a re-boot before we try again.
Wonderful food, relaxed atmosphere and professional service. I have had both lunch and dinner here, and I always recommend it to others. Our server was delightful. She was warm, helpful, professional, and seems to enjoy working there, and it shows. Thank you for a fun and delicious night!
