Everything about Capannina is soft and subtle. The decor - celadon green upper walls, ambra marble below, handmade glass lamps, hanging mirror panels and faux columns that glow from the lights behind them - is simple yet striking. The marble, the lamps, and many of the ingredients used in the excellent dishes are all imported from Italy and the subtle softness of the interior extends to the food: eclectic Italian with an emphasis on Southern Italian tradition while still maintaining well-orchestrated choices from all over Italy. With pasta made in-house and delightfully fresh buffalo mozzarella coming from Italy, Capannina offers the essence of subtlety in the artistic presentation of its menu, along with an atmosphere that conveys the slightest California touch. PLEASE NOTE: We serve a prix fixe menu, consisting of a three-course dinner for $30 per person every day from 5pm to 6pm. Thereafter, we serve a regular menu.

Capannina Ratings and Reviews
We stumbled on Capannina by chance as we were staying at a nearby hotel and were first-time visitors to the city so knew nothing. We were pleasantly surprised: our 3 main courses (inc 2 vegetarian) were outstanding. Our teenager claimed she had the best ravioli she’s ever eaten! And these were followed up by 3 desserts that were the same calibre. Excellent Italian fare, a good wine list inc. wines by the glass, plus attentive, friendly service. We live in Melbourne, Australia which has some great Italian restaurants so we know what can be done. Capaninna is a gem. We returned a week later with a US friend and she was equally impressed. Thank you and well done to all who make it happen at Capaninna!
their "most popular pasta" boar pappardelle was overcooked, almost bland in flavor, lacking in boar. for a well-rated italian place's most popular pasta, it was quite a disappointment.
beef carpaccio was good, value is pretty good for your dollar, portions healthy
very nice ambiance, but a bit loud
We went to Capannina for dinner on New Year’s Eve, partly because it had great ratings, and partly because it was one of the few places that still had a table for 4 available after 6:00 pm. We ended up with one of the last reservations of the night, but we were not disappointed. Every dish we tried was prepared perfectly. I can still taste the black truffle risotto two days later. I can not wait to go back next time I am in San Francisco. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a great meal.
The deliciously cooked food was accompanied by very good but not intrusive service. The kitchen knows how to prepare the dishes to perfection. The seared tuna was buttery, and seasoned and seared just right, cooked to perfection and the Chilean sea bass was cooked just right, not over cooked. The Caesar with crab was light and airy, and the mussels were tender and not chewy. Service was impeccable.
Excellent food and service.
The Scaloppini and Gnocchi were perfect. Nice wine selection both domestic and Italian choices and reasonably priced, we had a red from the Veneto region which was lovely and about $45. Service was warm and efficient. We'll return again soon.
Truly incredible! Our first time at Capannina. Four of us celebrating our friends recent nuptials. The owner was charming/beyond hospitable. The service was impeccable and the food was amazing!! A great experience all around. Thank you for making a very special occasion even more memorable!
The atmosphere was very romantic and the wine was good. However, they could not remember our reservation (even though we had called to confirm). The food was over priced for the quality. It was not as flavorful as it should have been. The staff were all very kind, but we were left unimpressed by the food.
I gave 5 stars for service because our waiter Sergio deserved it - he was the best, knowledgeable and attentive. But another waiter, not ours, was intentionally extremely rude to me personally. I truly hope he has been fired for his surly impudence, which I did report to the management. The room is lovely and on a better night could certainly be called romantic. Unfortunately the night we were there with out-of-town guests, the noise level was far beyond acceptable. One large party was extremely loud, forcing everyone else in the room to raise their voices just to be heard in conversation. My wife swears she will never go there again, even though we live only a few blocks away.
The food and wine were both excellent, and very reasonably priced. Seared scallops over squid ink risotto was excellent, as was the veal scallopini.
Always a great experience! Love the food here. And the staff are very generous with their guidance and time.
I ordered the crab salad, which is one of my seasonal favorites. Always fresh, perfectly dressed, and with a very generous amount of crab. This time I ordered the spicy shrimp pasta. I let them know about my garlic intolerance, which they accommodated without hassle. Unfortunately, they also left off the shrimp, which I didn't really think about, until I ate my leftovers the next day...and realized that there had been none. My bad, I am sure if I had pointed this out, it would have been corrected right away.
If you are looking for a quite conversation, ask for the booth in the back. Highly recommend this place.
No question the food was excellent and we were given the table we asked for. However, the service was (with one exception) indifferent and inefficient. We'd planned on a glass of wine before the meal but the wine didn't appear until after the first course was served. Dishes appeared at odd times. Repeated requests for butter were not met until after the bread was removed. No excuse because the place was not full. A shame because we used to like Capannina and live just up the street, but we would not recommend it to friends judging from this past experience and probably won't go again ourselves. But perhaps they were just having a bad night; it happens.
The dishes were very good, well prepared and seasoned nicely. The service however, was very hurried to the point of giving the impression that the desire to turn the table was more important than anything else. Together with a very high noise level that made a conversation quite difficult. Our overall impression was decidedly negative....too many other nice restaurants in the area.
My friend and I went here because we thought the ambiance looked cute when we walked by on Union street. While the service was great and the ambiance was generally good, the food didn't hit the mark. We both had pasta dishes, which you'd expect an Italian place to do very well, but one was too spicy and the linguini with clams was just so-so. The folks next to us recommended the veal scallopini which is probably the way to go! I also got sick to my stomach after I finished eating
We went here for our anniversary. We couldn’t have been more happy with our service and dinner. The squid ink risotto was to die for. Both of us loved our meals and had a great experience. Food clearly came out as soon as it hade finished cooking because it was piping hot and wonderful. Definitely recommend this quaint little restaurant.
