We had a lovely evening. Service was charming and personal. Food was delicious. The filet of sole , the salmon and the cioppino were all delicious.
Fresh pasta and seafood. Great wine selection with expert recommendation from the staff.
Have now eaten at Capannina twice. Both times the food was terrific and outstanding for the price. Portions are large - larger than this 71 year old can finish. Service and ambiance are more than adequate. Only complaints: (1) Like many Italian restaurants Capannina serves up cold, white "Italian" bread as its only bread. Time to discover one of the Italian whole grain bread recipes and warm it before serving. (2) When the restaurant is full the noise level makes conversation difficult. The dining experience would be much improved is the owners installed some sound absorbing materials on the walls and the ceiling.
We love Capanninna and this recent visit introducing friends to one of our neighborhood spots did not disappoint. Pastas are wonderful - especially love the pappardelle and the raviolo. Insalate Cesare is another favorite. Nice list of Italian wines. Love the owner and staff - makes me feel like I'm on vacation in Italy but with only a short walk down the hill.
In a City like San Francisco you are either Authentic or you will not be in business very long!
Long Live Capannina, as they say in Italy for the next 100 years. We tasted many of their dishes, desserts and wine. We eat Italian 3 times a week all over the globe and this is now in the top of my must repeat when in SF again! The staff was excellent, very accommodating and made the evening that much more enjoyable!
This was the best Italian food I have ever had. I had the CIOPINA and it was excellent. My mother also commented that her Tiramisu was the best she ever had. The atmosphere was cozy. Prices were reasonable. I would recommend this restaurant.
Wonderful time! Perfectly managed! Grazie Mille! We closed the place!!
Excellent food and atmosphere. You feel like you are in Italy when eat here. The owner is on site most nights and the wait staff is terrific. Besides having excellent food and service, it's a good value.
It’s always great, I’m always happy to bring friends there. It’s my favorite Italian restaurant in San Francisco.
Great, authentic restaurant. We came after a Sunday theater matinee and each had their prix fixe menu. Very nice choices offered, all food was done well, good portions and the $30 price was quite a good deal. Our waiter, can't remember his name, was Italian and a great help with the right white wine to start with (Vermentino?). His service and knowledge about the menu were terrific as well. I will definitely go back and explore more of the menu.
We like to eat here when we are in the city overnight. The food is always so fresh and imaginative and the pasta is fabulous. The owner is so gracious and the wait staff is superb. I nice taste if Italy! Can't wait to return!
Great food and service. Not a large restaurant and yet we didn't feel cramped.
Wonderful cuisine. Cesar our waiter was very professional and kind. The owner even came over to see how satisfied we were. Great table.
My boyfriend and I discovered this place in December. We were checking out the holiday event nearby and we could smell this place from a block away. We obviously didn't have reservations and were extremely lucky that a table had just left. We were able to get this last table that was outside and it was such a delicious meal! We loved everything from the wine, the service, the food, and the friendly owner that was wandering around talking to the guests. We loved it so much that when we were back in town this week we made reservations to enjoy it again. Once again it did not disappoint. My boyfriend had the ahi tuna and I had the short rib ravioli (same as last time because it was so delicious!). We left with our bellies full and couldn't have been happier. Thanks again for such a great dining experience!
Outstanding food, friendly but professional staff, always comforting to dine there. A few outdoor tables available, with heaters, for canine companions.
My only complaint was that I asked for the bill to charged 2/3 on one credit card and 1/3 on another. That did not happen and i did not realize it until today. i am planning to call Michaela and discuss it with him.
We live in Southern California but have a condo here. Every time we come up we make a point of eating here. I’m Italian and the food her is perfect.
We were greeted promptly and seated in a comfortable booth. Waiter brought water and informed us of specials and then allowed as much time as we wanted before ordering. They have an excellent basil oil dip for bread. Food was excellent and we never felt rushed nor did we feel we were waiting g on them ... they served at our pace. Pricing is in keeping with what i would expect for fine dining. Very enjoyable!
The food is delicious. They take good care of you.
We stopped by for dinner after walking up Lombard Street, and it was a great cap to our evening. Delicious food, great ambience.
The food was excellent, the service was great! It was my birthday and they sang Happy Birthday and comped Limoncello liqueur to us. I love this restaurant and highly recommend it! They have been here for years and are just as delicious and wonderful as the 1st time I came many years ago.
This was our second visit over the last 3 years and the quality of food and service hasn’t wavered one bit. Excellent both times and Casper our waiter was superb in making us feel like I have known him forever. The owner Michele Di Ruocco is equally gracious and I will not miss this restaurant on any trip to San Francisco.
I was looking for something near my office that would be great for a casual date night last minute. We were able to secure a table for two with no problem, and enjoyed a truly delicious meal! I highly recommend the pesto sauce that comes with your pre-meal bread! Absolutely addicting! I ordered the penne with fabulous results, and my partner loved the stone-pressed chicken and kale. While we didn't stay for desert, we each enjoyed an espresso, which was absolutely lovely with a rich chocolate/hazelnut flavor. 10/10 would definitely recommend again and again!
Wonderful food and wonderful waiters
We felt it was too noisy and table for four too small. The first time we ate at C it was quiet and lovely during the week. We also felt rushed. Told our waiter we wanted to sit and not to bring coffee or dessert right away.
Great as always!
This is one of our favorite restaurants. The food is delicious. The service is great. The staff are helpful and make you feel special. The wine list is good. The brick roasted chicken is a must and a special Italian dish which is not available in most Italian restaurants. The pastas and seafood dishes are superb. The white tablecloths and napkins make it feel upscale but it has a very warm, friendly, intimate vibe. We always enjoy our time there.
High quality classic Italian food at reasonable prices. The prix fixe 3 course dinner is a particular bargain.
Everything was good til we got to the end , after we finished the check we decide we wanted to get an after dinner drink and the waiter was not interested and rushed us out , other than that everything was decent .
Capannina is flat-out a terrific traditional, neighborhood Italian restaurant. We regularly take out-of-town guests because we can count on the service, food and wines in a perfect Union Street location.
It is always nice to go to Campanile.
The service is friendly and professional
Excellent Italian cuisine. Good wine list. Not too noisy. Very accommodating. We hadn't dined on Union Street in 25 years but now we are hankering to go back.
Favorite Italian restaurant - neighborhood gem!
Went to Capannina for a dinner with friends after a matinee performance. The food was quite good, the service friendly and efficient and all the people in our party were very pleased with the experience.
Great little Italian restaurant just up from Cow Hollow and the Marina District. Our waiter Sergio has an infectious smile and spirit that really lifted up our experience. The wine list is OK, just that they store their wines too warm. We had a recommended wine that was over the hill and again sered way too warm. Bring your own bottle, and order the Pastas or Cioppino, it will make your day complete!
This place was amazing! I would highly recommend for visitors and locals alike. The service was impeccable and food was as authentic as when I lived in Naples, Italy. Eat here and you will not be disappointed!
