Friday - Saturday: 5:00pm - 10.00pm
We came for an 8:30 pm dinner reservation. We asked to have our dinner in three courses. Instead, all of the food was brought out at once. When we asked why, they told us the kitchen was closing so they decided to send out all of the food at once. In a city with abundant restaurant choices, there is no need to return to a place where the closing of the kitchen is more important than the dining experience of the patrons. We would not recommend this restaurant.
Brought me back to Italy, a recent trip that I cannot wait to repeat. Staff was very friendly and food was deelish! Dare I say maybe better than a lot of the food I had IN Italy...!!!
Amazing! We overnighted in San Fran with friends just so we could eat here again. Michele and his staff don’t disappoint. The food was just as good as we remembered. Can’t wait to return again. Thank you so much and god bless your cousin, Tony, who introduced us to your restaurant. 🙏❤️
Wonderfully service and friendly staff. Food is excellent as well
Food was great and service excellent. Not sure if is customary in San Francisco to add the tip amount automatically or to leave it up to the customer, in this case they added to the bill with no other option
The menu and decor are dated. The service is rushed.
Not awful, but not great.
Excellent food and excellent service on my wife's birthday. She was go glad that I took her to this restaurant to celebrate her special day.
excellent food & attentive service! a true neighborhood gem!
Food very ordinary except branzini (whole fish) which was excellent.
I wouldn't return unless I lived on the block.
We have ALWAYS looked forward to eating at this restaurant, so were naturally disappointed this time. We usual reserve a table around 5 pm to avoid loud crowds. Naturally on a Friday nite, the restaurant just had a couple of tables occupied. No sooner were we served food or wine, there an usual amount of discomfort by table servers CONSTANTLY asking if we were finished. Maybe there is someone out there who can finish a plateful of dinner in 5-10 mins, but I can't. Also it was pretty obvious our plates were full. I can understand one interruption, but 5 within less than an hour!!! What gives CAPA???
Fantastic food and people. Mikeli (owner) is a super guy!
Authentic Italian. Good food, attentive, friendly staff and roomier than most Italian restaurants I’ve visited in San Francisco. Highly recommend for a reasonably priced and not pretentious little neighborhood gem.
It was yummy, but very quick.
Second time to review this restaurant. We really love the food here, however, I have one small complaint this time....a little heavy on the salt. I ordered the lamb chops and they were very good except for the excess salt. My friend had the seared tuna and also said she would have liked it a little less salty. Overall the rest of the meal was excellent. The roasted octopus was tender and perfectly grilled, the carpaccio was the delicious as were our desserts. One of the best things about this restaurant is the staff. Our waiter was charming, great at what he does and very attentive. If you are in the area and are craving authentic Italian food - Capaninna is the place to go.
Amazing food, service, and atmosphere was outstanding for entertaining out of town business clients. Highly recommended!
My favorite restaurant especially for a weekday night. Great food, good wine, excellent service and nice people. This is our "go-to" restaurant when friends visit.
Capannina it is a typical italian restaurant. Bread and olive oil served before the meal. The pastas are good and the same for the “veal scalopino a Marsala”, a popular dish of Italia
This is our #1 "go-to" for dates, out of towners, special occassions. The owners are absolutely charming, the food never disappoints, the truffles during the season are outstanding and the place is always filled to the max, which makes if extra fun and lively. If you can grab a booth, the noise level is reduced greatly. If you are Italian or have friends visiting from Italy its extra fun to get the Italian banter going with the guys!
A small restaurant with fantastic food. Go. The wait staff are awesome. Listen to their suggestions. You’ll have a fantastic meal.
Phenomenal !!! We truly enjoyed the food and the ambiance ❤️ We had the tuna risotto, oysters and cioppino. All so amazing ! We also had an excellent bottle of rosè. We will be back. Thank you for the delicious food and great service.
We were celebrating a birthday and had a very enjoyable evening. The food was very tasty and cooked just right. The service was efficient though i would prefer it to be a little more friendly. We would definitely come back again because the food was that good.
Amazing, intimate Italian dining! Would recommend making a reservation if you have a party of four or more.
Absolutely fantastic in every way. Great food, great service and friendly staff. A definite must if you’re looking for authentic Italian food.
We love this restaurant and it is the first one we think of when we dine in SF. We love the location on Union Street and we love the food. They are always very welcoming and efficient.
The food is authentic and delicious. I had the filet of sole in a beautiful lemon caper sauce - the best I’ve ever had.
Our waiter was charming and the service was perfect.
Beautifully prepared classic Italian. Very well cheated wine list.
Really pretty and cozy ambiance but the service is Keryun lost in translation. The guy who supposedly Italian, wasn’t letting us take our time to make selection from the menu, he kept on rushing us to make one. I felt that he was demonstrating the sense in rush and business so it would create an atmosphere of a busy and successful business. Then when he brought food he was ready to take it for the same reason. So I felt like I am not relaxed and enjoying g my dinner with my friends but more like on the business meeting- in and out. Other than that the food was good and ambiance was really nice. I would still go there for the ambiance and the wine list. And also give him a chance again to make sure if I was write or wrong the first time:)
We are in San Francisco about twice a year and always make time for this restaurant. Solid cooking. Range of choices. Moderate prices. Great value.
Wonderful as always!! A bit loud as we were seated next to a table of about 20 folks but food and service was extraordinary as always.
Lovely pretty traditional Italian. Service was spot on - not rushed but not waiting for food either. Waiter was very chattty and engaging. The food itself was fantastic! Three of us had the Octopus starter - and it was sublime! The only other place I have had octopus recently was a 3 Michelin star restaurant in Spain last month and this came pretty darned close! Entrees were all similarly wonderful - risottos, gnocchi and one chicken dish - all gobbled up. No room for desert for the ladies but the very hungry gent with us scoffed a pear tart before the waiter could even bring us tasting spoons....guessing it was pretty good!
Usually LOVE this place but we ate there a couple of nights ago and the food was just meh...Maybe an off night or maybe the regular chef was off...don’t know. Disappointed
Sergio was wonderful. Our family dinner was very special and we will definitely be back!
Great Italian restaurant whose fare far exceeds that of other establishments in the neighborhood.
Street parking is a contact sport, so use the public parking lot one block away.
Nice neighborhood restaurant with excellent food, great service and a warm atmosphere.
My husband and I were visiting the bay area for a weekend and found Capannina online. They had excellent reviews and for a very good reason. The ambiance, food and service are excellent. We tried the bean soup to start, which was delicious. I had the sole and my husband had the halibut. Both fabulous. We finished with the tiramisu, which was heavenly. We would definitely return again!
Small restaurant. Food and service was excellent; food was fresh. Delicious bread with dipping oil.
Excellent food prepared freshly and well. We highly recommend and will
We love this restaurant. It is such a pleasure to be able to talk to the other people at the table and be heard. We had the Prix fixe meal as we arrived before 6 pm and it is a fabulous value. Had the Caesar salad with crab (great), the chicken under a brick - also very good and warm chocolate cake dessert which was fabulous too. All this for $30! Service attentive but not overbearing, ambiance terrific and quite honestly I can't find any fault. Have eaten at many other "high end" restaurants that can't hold a candle to this love neighborhood gem.
We will be back
Consistently good traditional offerings and services to match.
