Always a solid choice! The service is always amazing. The food is always good and consistent.
Capannina is truly a wonderful experience. Amazing food and flavors. We always order the Squid Ink Risotto! The staff really makes you feel welcome and we love the cozy environment.
Fantastic food and staff I would highly recommend this restaurant. Michela you have a wonderful place!!! Thank you for making my wife’s birthday a special occasion.
Never a disappointment. Great service and delicious food.
Another terrific dinner. Sergio, our waiter, was outstanding and the food was delicious. We had a group of 11 and everything was served perfectly and the timing of the courses was great. One of our guests had just returned from a three-week trip around Italy and commented that this food was better than anything he had over there—high praise given the fact that he is a “foodie.”
Food good not great. Choices not very interesting.
Lovely!! Thank you.
The service at Capannina is always brilliant - they are so knowledgeable, professional & fantastic, we keep returning! We love it.
Very loud crude language from some diners. Waiting staff rude, rushing us and taking plates away before we finished eating. Pouring water on side plates and on my husband when refilling glasses. Nice food but awful dining experience we do not recommend this place.
Appreciated this traditionally gracious Italian restaurant in ambiance, service, noise level. Our party of 6 enjoyed our 3 generation visit especially in contrast to most Union Street restaurants where muzak levels are cranked way up management went out of way to accommodate; only did 4.5 stars on food cause simplest marinara/tomato pasta overwhelmed w/too much garlic (same as most places). Much enjoyed our evening.
VERY VERY LOUD! OT billed this as a quiet spot. No! Had to shout to be heard.
Food and service were excellent, if a loud place is what you want.
Excellent service, excellent food. Quiet in the restaurant conducive for conversation and visiting with friends. Somehow I had not been to the Capannia for a couple of years after my parents passed away. Used to go there quite often. So glad we went again and will continue to do so as before.
We love Capannia’s. The food, staff and ambiance are outstanding.
The 3 course fixed price menu available before 6 is a great deal. Excellent food, nice wine selection, and perfect service make this one of our go to places.
Reliably good Italian food with reasonable (by San Francisco standards) prices. A quaint neighborhood establishment.
Food was great as usual and service very good and friendly. However there was a table of 5 that was so inconsiderate and loud. They thought they were the only people in the restaurant who mattered. It is a small place and it is a shame that some people don't think .
Exquisite! The dishes were reminiscent of the food we enjoyed in Italy. The service was excellent. It was a wonderful place to celebrate a special occasion during our visit to San Francisco.
The service was great, but the food was just average. Not what I expected given the price point and other reviews. I had the beef carpaccio appetizer and the boar ragu pasta.
Way too expensive for quality and quantity
I ordered cioppino. Lobster was old
Great in every way
Sometimes, you just have a magical dinner in the City. Like when you go to Capannina on Union Street and are warmly greeted by the always lovely, twinkly-eyed owner, Michele di Ruocco. You order the perfectly tender roasted octopus starter and a nice little half bottle of St. Michael-Eppan Pinot Grigio. Then, you notice San Francisco Giants Third Baseman, Evan Longoria, emerge from his table across the room to personally thank Michele for another delicious meal, and take a photo with a server. Mr. Longoria subtley shies away from the attention and generously leaves behind the half-full decanters of Brunello and Amarone he no doubt enjoyed to celebrate his two-run home run that led to the Giants 3-1 victory over the Phillies earlier in the day. Ever the consummate host, Michele takes those un-finished decanters and places them on the empty table next to you for you and your friend to enjoy with the Veal Scaloppini and Branzino you’ve ordered. Michele also tells you about one of Evan’s favorite dishes, the Risotto Nero Con Capesante Alla Veneziana, or, Black Ink Risotto with Seared Scallops and Lobster Bisque, and then offers said dish for you to try, and it’s one of the best risotto’s you’ve ever had in your life. As you’re devouring it, scraping the dish to get every last taste of that yummy squid ink sauce, you see that a guest at the next table over is wearing a Giants hat. You tell him that was Evan Longoria who won the game today that just left and he tells you that he and his friend were actually at Oracle Park to witness that great hit, and you are so excited for them that they got to see the game’s hero twice in one day, the second time up close and in person. Even though you are full, you order a second half bottle of Pinot Grigio and proceed to enjoy your beautifully executed veal and Mediterranean fish dishes alongside those great Italian reds Mr. Longoria left for someone to enjoy. Now, that someone will be a life-long Longoria fan.
The atmosphere is very quite and quaint. The food is as good as Italian food we ate in Italy itself! Absolutely delicious!! And a wonderful choice of appetizers, wine, and entrees! We go here every time we come to San Francisco!
Second time in two weeks. As great as it was the first time. Had the Octopus appetizer. Unbelievably tender and flavorful. My wife had the seared ahi over spicy prawn risotto. It was perfect and a very generous portion. Look at the pictures on the restaurant website. Came out just like the pictures. I had linguini with clams. Sauce was perfect with a lot of manila clams. Best console I have had. Will be coming again soon. Service was great and Michela was a wonderful host once again. Love this restaurant!
Food was fine but not exceptional. Wine selection was not what it could be. No Tignanello????? It wouldn’t take much to uptick the experience to a 4-1/2 star but some effort needed. The space is certainly original SF Italian...nice!
Such an amazing meal for my husbands birthday! The service was amazing and the food was the best Italian we’ve had in a long time!
Excellent Italian restaurant in San Francisco! Loved everything about it!
Another excellent meal at Campagnia. This is a terrific restaurant, with consistently good food and service. One of our go to places in the union Street area.
We enjoyed our dinner immensely and hope to return next time we visit San Francisco.
We had passed by this local spot too many times to not finally give it a go-- especially since it's always packed! We chose to visit on a Saturday night (with family in town) and had a wonderful experience! The waitstaff was so warm and welcoming and the food was delicious! They even were able to make a gluten-free option of the pasta for my boyfriend's uncle. We loved it and will be back!
We tried it again! We had been here about 5 years ago and liked it but didn't feel compelled to go back..However we were looking for a place to my Birthday and looked at the menu and decided to give it another try and we really liked it..Especially liked the oysters and the octopus. My husband loved the gnocchi with gorgonzola. I thought it was good but not up to my gold standard of Myth(long closed). Chocolate dessert with hazelnut gelato plus a Moscato d'Italia topped it off. I did think that since they asked on website if was an occasion and I said it was my Birthday that the didn't do more than our a candle in the dessert we ordered. A small perk or comp would have gone a long way...
I had been here before with a group, some years ago, and remembered the restaurant as being very good. I recently returned with my partner and had a wonderful, romantic dinner on a relatively quiet evening. The service was superb, the food was excellent, and the staff and owner were as warm and welcoming as they could possibly have been. (They even good-naturedly put up with my rusty Italian attempts.) This lovely restaurant is the real deal.
Incredible service. Server Antonio was great and the owner very friendly. Made you feel at home. Caesar with Dungeness crab was fantastic. Pork cutlet Milanese was fantastic and the brick oven chicken over the top. Generous portions perfectly prepared. High ratings are well deserved. Will definitely go back!
Excellent real authentic Italian food served in substantial portions in a lovely room. The restaurant was not full so the noise level was minimal. I cannot attest as to whether is would be noisy if the dining room were filled.
The food was superb. I would highly recommend the cioppino. I had the branzino which was scrumptious. We had an excellent half bottle of wine which added to this delightful meal.
The real southern italian atmospehre and true cooking !.
I ordered the ahi tuna over risotto and it was so good! Highly recommend this place. They also offer 1.5 glasses of wine (which really was like 2 glasses), which is the perfect amount!
Fantastic food and service! Authentic and very filling. Our server, Antonio, was very attentive and had the perfect recommendations.
Everything was great! Waiter was attentive and knew the menu items intimately.
They squeeze you in pretty tight but the ambiance provided compensated nicely.
The house-made pastas are nothing short of fabulous! The short ribs ravioli were just delicious, the fruta di mare spectacular! Yep, it's on our list for regular visits...
I will go back!
