Authentic Italian. Cow Hollow, San Francisco. Heard about this on a lucky tip while dining in Lincoln Center, NYC.
The place has a nice neighborhood , family vibe . The tables are a bit close , and staff bumped our chairs often . Our real disappointment was the food - the entree halibut was dry , the sauce was very salty . The black truffle pasta was good - but not worth $50 . The steak was over cooked . We would not go back . The bill was over $ 500 for 5 people . Only 1 bottle of wine at 50.00
Love this place
The seasonal truffle menu was delicious. The wait staff was attentive.
Sergio was our excellent server for the evening. We went with another couple and everything was perfect. A nice relaxed evening and the pacing of our meal was great. All 4 of us would return to Capannina and highly recommend the restaurant.
Staff was great with quality service and we loved the food. Our waiter recommended a great cab that we really enjoyed. Look forward to a return visit. Thanks Mr Niven for a great referral.
The food was excellent but the room was jam packed with too many small tables that made it impossible to move. There was too much noise that made it impossible to hear your partner. The entrance had a dirty curtain that was really old and ugly and definitely needed a change and the waiters seemed to just want to rush you to finish your food so they can seat new guests.
Unfortunately, we will not go back to Capannina in the near future.
The table we were given last Saturday was in path of every person arriving to the restaurant, who had to squuze by - many with canes and or/walking difficulties. Moreover, a cold wind was coming in with every door opening.
The owner, who proclaimed himself as such "I am the Owner here, not Sergio" seemed irritated, over stressed and not at all welcoming.
The whole evening was a struggle to hear our conversation (poor acoustics) and avoid having my guest's chair being pushed by incoming guests.
We came for Sergio, knowing his quality service, but likely stop going to avoid annoying "the owner".
Great spot with fantastic seafood!
This is a perfect neighborhood Italian restaurant with delicious food and very accommodating service. I especially love the octopus appetizer. Portions are generous and the owner obviously takes care in overseeing this operation. Bravo!
Had to wait a bit to be seated as the place was jump'n.
Food and service was great.
Great food, great service. We will definitely be back.
Wonderful food and service. We will definitely be back!!
This was Valentines day. prices were jacked up and. regular menu not available.
Sevice was wonderful.
food was not as good as usual.
I will go back but not for a holiday meal
Lovely service great food. No complaints
Wonderful food, wine, ambiance, and service. We ordered octopus salad which was the best we had ever had. The Barolo recommended by our waiter was excellent. I had the veal scalopini with Parmesan risotto and my wife had the lamb chops with black truffle potato’s, both delicious.
Very good italian food.
Restaurant a bit noisy however.
There’s something wonderful about Capannina: the food is consistently excellent and fresh. I eat there once a week and never had anything but outstanding dinner. Service is attentive(!) and excellent. I commented outside on my way home:” when at Campaninna” one feels in another ( super friendly) Country. It’s like being actually in Italy.
Capannina has been around for many years on a street that can turn over rapidly. There is a good reason for this. A well run restaurant with excellent Italian food at reasonable prices. Great appetizers, lots of fish and shell fish, well-executed pastas. Good wine list where $40-50 wines are featured. The room is crowded and the waiters move fast. You cannot go wrong at Capannina
The owner Michaele and staffs are wonderful. Food is great.
Delicious meal and great service! Pacing was a little too fast though, dishes came right after the next which made the meal feel a little rushed.
Romantic restaurant with great food and price fix menu was a good value. The only downside was the service was rushed and not enough attention to detail.
Opentable, you need to create a sixth star for this restaurant.
Everything was superb, the food, the ambiance, the service.
This place is now on my top 10 things to do in San Francisco.
Great meal. Split a salad and ravoili stuffed with short rib- excellent. I had great bronzino and my husband had the veal scallopini with black truffles. Everything great. Cozy atmosphere.
Capannina is a gem of a restaurant on Union Street in Cow Hollow. It is surrounded by cute shops and eateries, so it is a perfect place for dinner after an afternoon of enjoying the sights and shopping in one of San Francisco's most charming districts. The Caesar salad was one of the best I've had, and it was topped with fresh crab. My sole was delicious. The gnocchi was good but a bit bland. Our waiter was helpful, prompt and friendly. We enjoyed our dinner very much.
We thoroughly enjoyed or dinner. The ambiance was very nice, service attentive, food excellent and wine list reasonably priced and well represented. Overall value was good and everyone enjoyed every aspect. Will definitely return.
My son is a gluten-free eater and our waiter rattled off all the items from the menu that could be prepared gluten-free for him, without a moment of hesitation. Owner and staff are very welcoming and the service is excellent.
This was my 4th dining experience here and I have always loved this place as the best on union street.
However, I was quite upset when after dessert was served, the waiter asked that we please hurry to leave as he needed the table as others were waiting to be seated.
This was a rainy Tuesday nite early bird dinner for 2 at 5:30pm and there were only 3 other tables occupied. It was 7:30pm when we left so I guess we overstayed? But there was no line in or outside and there were plenty of tables for 4 and an empty table for 2 near us. There were only 6 other tables occupied when we left. It was a wonderful meal and service and then that comment just didn’t sit well. I guess I have to remind myself that I am not in Paris....
Each item we had was extremely fresh and perfectly made. I probably won't be able to eat fresh mozzarella for a long time now because theirs was so good. Pretty much goes for every component on each dish we were served. This restaurant will now be one of the reasons that I return to SF.
Another terrific meal at Campanina. I continue to believe this is one of the most under appreciated restaurants in the city. Excellent food offering combined with friendly service and reasonable prices make for a winning combination. Their $30 early dinner special has to be the best bargain in SF! We will be back!
We went on a really good night because they got a huge batch of black truffles in so they were adding black truffles to alot of their dishes for 1/3 of the normal price for truffles. The food was amazing. This place can easily become one of my regular haunts. We loved it.
It’s my third time here and I love it.
This was a delicious meal in a so many ways! The wait staff was so kind to my Mom and celebrating her birthday. The food was delicious and it was not loud. We thoroughly enjoyed it!
Old school Italian. Solid meal but nothing extraordinary. Pleasant staff and service. Definitely would return.
What a nice neighborhood restaurant. My grilled octopus and roasted sea bass were both outstanding.
Amazing in all aspects.
the service is excellent, the atmosphere is convivial, and the food is high quality. Special dinner deals between 5 and 6 pm!
Great, busy place with solid italian food and a good wine list with reasonable selections.
