Dine on flavorful dishes from Central and South America at Cantina Avenida. This neighborhood gem is set inside of a charming house that also offers outdoor seating for guests to take-in the sun as they dine. Owners Ken Alvarez, who's also a chef, along with his wife Kim opened this cozy spot for locals and travelers to enjoy Latin American fare. A plate of chili chicken wings or crab nachos are ideal appetizers for sharing with the entire family at Cantina Avenida Pork tacos with a cilantro mint onion salsa, turkey meatballs or a Latin noodle soup make for satisfying entrées.
Cantina Avenida was voted Best Kids Menu 2010 by Philadelphia Magazine. It offers brunch and provides catering service. This restaurant also serves cocktails like tasty margaritas and other libations.
Loved how attentive everyone on staff was. While sitting at the bar waiting for my margarita, a busboy brought me a glass of water. The hostess was so friendly and warm. Our waitress had a great command of the menu and I appreciated her hearty recommedations. And of course, the food was delicious!
We eat out a lot at a variety of places/cuisines. We go back to Avenida again and again. It's delicious, friendly, gracious. Never a bad dish. Every day there's a ceviche--always good. If you're vegetarian, you'll enjoy the vegetable plate, which includes a variety of vegetables and changes daily.
We had not been to Avenida since it changed over from Cresheim Cottage and the decor was warm and lovely, although the AC could not cool it off much when we were there. The appetizers of spare ribs with mole sauce and crispy calamari and greens were both excellent, but my main dish of tuna was overcooked, and although they happily took it back, the 2nd try was still not a great piece of tuna. Perhaps if I'd ordered something else, I would be able to rave more about this restaurant.
The food, the atmosphere and the service are always outstanding at Avenida!
I love Avenida and have been there several times. The only negative is that the smaller tables are all very close together. The restaurant is not very big so they don't really have a lot of space to work with.
American food with a South American flair. Chef is from Ecuador and his sauces are reflective in his use of spice and condiments. Good mojitos and margharitias.
I live in the Mt. Airy section of Philadelphia and Avenida is steps away from my door. My boyfriend and I went on a quiet Thursday evening and had the dining room to ourselves (which is not the norm especially on a Friday or Saturday night). Our server was attentive and because she knew the menu very well, she was able to make great suggestions. They have quite a few drink specials going on since it's summer time and they are to die for. And of course, the food was delicious. My boyfriend had a pan-seared Brazilian fish (the name ecapes me but it's comparable to sea bass), and I had the goat cheese salad and cerviche. Both were excellent. Avenida is a great neighborhood find.
Decor, service and creative food options. A real nice and upscale feel.
I took a group of 10 co-workers to Avenida recently for appetizers and drinks and everything was great: food; cocktails; service; and setting. Our apps - which were all delicious - ranged from mussels to fondido to ribs, and people had a lot of fun sampling from the creative cocktail selection that includes multiple types of mojitos and margueritas, pisco sours, and of course Avenida's delicious sangrias. I highly recommend this spot!
We were happy to find that there was outdoor seating on the cool summer night that we went. Our food tasted great - varied sauces and flavors made each dish taste different. The octopus was somewhat less interesting than the rest of our food, but the "El Biche" soup tasted fantastic, as did the chicken tostada. Entremezes portions were mostly filling enough to be our main courses, with the exception being the seafood tostada - large, but not a lot of seafood. Fantastic chips with salsa and guac made the dinner complete.
I've been here several times and all the food is really well prepared and seasoned. The tamale is phenomenal and for dessert I highly recommend the pineapple upside down cake--amazing!
I love Avenida so much that I now create reasons to celebrate just so I can dine at Avenida again!
Outstanding service and great food. Loved the ambience and music choice!
We frequent Avenida often. Our server was knowledgable and helpful. She endorsed one of the ongoing drink specials which I tried and thoroughly enjoyed. The flavors are always crisp and clean and fresh. Even though I do have favorites on the menu, I try to sample something different whenever ever I visit and never have been disappointed.
Good food and good feel to the restaurant, however service was pretty bad (waiting for drinks, food order, etc.) despite not being full that night.
nice little spot in Chestnut hill...great food, ambience....parking is a bit of a challenge
We celebrated father's day at Avenida. The restaurant offered free special beer drinks for the fathers in our party. The beers, served with limes and salted and hot pepper glass rims, were quite tasty. Everyone enjoyed their food which included BBQ short ribs, beet salad, pork pabil, chicken and pork tostadas and a barimundi special. The service was relaxed and very friendly, although a vegetable fandido appetizer never arrived. But our waitress dealt with the mistake with grace.
The good food and relaxed atmosphere make Avenida one of my favorite restaurants.
Interesting and well executed appetizers and entree. Nice twists on standard dishes and some surprises. Good service and nice location. Good value.
Welcomed by a friendly staff, immediately seated and served a delicious meal, which is everything I look for in a restaurant.
We were there on a very busy Saturday eve and it took forever to get our entrees. However, the staff was very accommodating and comped our drinks and apps! They were very apologetic and I think that the kitchen just got swmaped with a couple of parties all ordering at the the same time! The food was good and we would definitely go back again!
Great find in the Mt Airy/Chestnut Hill area- I really enjoyed the food and the margaritas and would definitely return, though it was a little pricey but overall reasonable for the quality.
The food has always been very good every time we have eaten at this restaurant. Sitting outdoors is quiet, indoors can be noisy. The wait staff is always very friendly & accommodating. Service is always good.
Found Avenida to be a good fit for a business meeting where even though their were other patrons I was still able to talk confidentially with my client
It was quiet because we were outside. Inside was very noisy,
Old creeky house turned restaurant. Has so much character and charm. Once you enter, you're greeted warmly by staff and the great service continues through the night. Food is DELICIOUS. Dessert is divine. Cocktails ... you just need to keep them coming, especially with the micheladas and margaritas! And don't forget your after dinner ron zacapa. Great for smaller groups or larger groups. Back patio has a homey back patio feel :)
I absolutely love the food and the service at Avenida!
Food was wonderful. Friendly wait staff. Great atmosphere. Love the place and will be back!
We went to Avenida for brunch and the overall experience was great! When we arrived we were seated promptly, our waiter took a little bit to get to our table, but she was very nice and energetic. The food was excellent, everything was fresh.
This was our fifth time there and as always, the service was friendly and the food was a treat to the palate.
My husband and I have never been so dissatisfied! The margaritas are served in small cups but they still charge $9 for them. We made a reservation and were willing to wait for an outside table but no one could accomodate us. We had 2-3 servers throughout the night. Our appetizer consisted of one softshell crab and we were told it would be big enough for 2 to share?! Our food was delayed coming out so we were brought 7 tortilla chips- yes 7. My meal was supposed to be served w warm tortillas but I was almost finished before they were xmserved. We asked for our check mid- dinner. Terrible.
Great place to celebrate, did get a bit too noisy to hear conversation
Nice change of pace if you like Latino inspired food. Moderately priced. Went with a group of 12 for an office celebration. The size of our group overwhelmed the waitress and kitchen a bit so service was slow. Overall everyone enjoyed their meals well enough. Hope this place makes it - the area needs more choices.
On time for our reservations 7;30, waiting to 7:55, I got up to ask the bartender for drinks. They were served promptly & were very good. Then we finally ordered and again for some reason one cooked appetizer came out 30 min later and were told the kitchen was backed up. We were fine with that. Then we noticed that 3 other tables that came in AFTER us got the food shortly after they sat down. Were confused because preparing a beet salad and guacamole/chips do not seem to be cooked and again the other tables were eating the same food? Finally my friend said something and we got our food a bit later. We thought that the restaurant would at least take off 1 simple appetizer such as the guac/chips but NO! Honestly the was food good, service bad.
We had a great meal on Cinco de Mayo - there were a lot of specials, including delicious margaritas! The hostess was very helpful and friendly. Our service was extremely slow (our appetizers arrives before our drinks). Our food was very good overall (especially the grilled octopus appetizer). I was not thrilled with the very watery black bean soup.
Food was very good. The noise level was too high. The tables are close and the noise travels. it was impossible to talk at the table.
as usual the food was excellent.
Chilean sea bass very good. Appetizers fried oysters and grilled octopus very good. Good margaritas. Good price for entrees. Appetizers a little over
The food was all prepared perfectly and we enjoyed everything that we ordered. Good daily specials that are reasonably priced. We will definitely be heading back here.
With a per person cost that equals some very nice establishments in center city, we expected more- more flavor as well as more attentive and refined service. Though the food was cooked well, it could have been from any average American restaurant, lacking even the slightest hint of Latin flavors, which is what we expected from a "Latin" restaurant. Though the hostess and staff was friendly, the waitress was painfully slow, inattentive and unprofessional. We won't be back.
