Canteen - Edmonton Ratings and Reviews
From the moment we walked in we were greeted amediatley, that to me is important. All staff was very nice, food came out in good time, wine selection was great and the food was amazing if you like seafood and meat then you have to go. Portion sizes were a very good size. We had the scallops to start and entrees were the beef short rib and the ribs. We will definitely be back!!!
In general I enjoyed my experience at Canteen. The food was lovely and not over the top expensive. The serving sizes were good and there were no TVs (yay!). However, I did find the service to be lacking. The appetizer came out in about 45 min which would have been fine, had our server been around to refill our drinks (which sat empty for 30 min). Dinner arrived about 40 minutes after the appetizers. I wasn’t in a rush to eat but this seemed to be a bit much, especially with empty drinks in front of us.
I’m not really sure where the hold up was, but it definitely could have been handled better.
Not too many vegetarian dish options. Expected the chicken and waffles to be better. Although the quantity is generous, I found them quite bland and mostly batter not a lot of chicken. Beet salad was good. A basket of bread to start would have been nice. Experience was just ok.
We were greeted warmly and shown to our table. The ambiance of the room is lovely. The food was very tasty and they had some unique selections on the menu. The wine selection by the glass, although only 3 choices, we tried 2 and they were both delicious! Staff were very friendly and provided just the right amount of attention.
After we were seated, it took at least 10 mins before anyone came to us with water or menus. I ordered the prosecco drink and my boyfriend had the Marty (beer with sweet bacon). My drink arrived first. It took about another 5 mins before my boyfriend got his drink. It would've been nice to have the drinks arrive at the same time as I was waiting to make a toast. I also would've appreciated the server to at least inform us that she was waiting for the bacon from the kitchen (I'm guessing this was the reason for the delay) rather than wonder if they forgot about the beer. At least the food came out quickly. The food was good but I was expecting more based on the reviews I read and the price point. I really do appreciate that they will take brunch reservations and they serve ace coffee. The service was OK - Nothing spectacular. I might come back to try dinner, but I'll go somewhere else for brunch considering there are so many options for brunch.
This is a go-to brunch spot for me. Recently tried the crispy pork belly (with polenta, Brussels sprouts and caramelized onions) and everything was perfect. Probably the best dish I've tried there. Lemon ricotta pancakes are also a great option... would recommend asking for a bit more syrup.
My wife and I went to this restaurant because we were curious to find out how different it is from Red Oxx Inn. Our appetizer was Chilli Grilled Prawns and it was excellent. Main course was short ribs for me and my wife had BBQ pork ribs. Presentation of both dishes was very good and they tasted very good as well. What was rather dissapointing was the initial presentation of the $50 red wine we ordered. The wine was much too cold, almost felt like it came from the fridge and it took 40 minutes for it to open up and be flavourfull!
The reason for the low score on ambiance, is the fact that the restaurant is very noisy and our table for two was positioned in a way that I was looking into the kitchen and people going to washrooms. Perhaps reorganization of chairs is in order. The washrooms were very nice and clean.
We really enjoyed the restaurant. We parked right outside to door. No issue with the reservation. Table toward the back of the room plenty bug enough.
Started with a cocktail, Moscow mule in a copper cup. Yeah! Starters were the scallops and the deep fried cheese. Both we fantastic in their own way.
Main course was the pork chop special on spatzle and red cabbage. My wife enjoyed then chicken on waffles. Only comment was too much waffle for her.
Noise level was high but I don't think it bothered most of the guests.
Overall a great night out..
Had a great brunch at Canteen. Hubby ordered the chicken and waffles done in a Korean style with pear kimchi. Waffle and chicken were amazing, but wasn't blown away by the combo of the kimchi flavour with the waffle. I had the dutch baby pancake. Really tasty pancake and sausage! There was a lot of rhubarb compote and candied walnuts, which made it quite sweet. But very tasty! Our server was very abrupt and seemed like she wanted us to hurry up, which affected the experience. I had been there before and had an amazing experience. This time wasn't quite as great.
We've been to Canteen a few times, but this is the first time we've been in with our daughter, who is seven months old. The restaurant does not have high chairs, but the staff were very accommodating, adjusting some tables to make room for her to sit in her stroller at the end of the table. The restaurant is quiet enough to talk, but has enough of a din that a "talking" baby won't disturb anyone.
The food was excellent as always.
Service was great!Coffees, teas, drinks and deserts wereally excellent but Chicken and waffles was not good and soggy. I had the lamb shank which was Incredible but the beans in the warm salad were under cooked. My daughter had back ribs and found everything on her plate amazing.
I really enjoy the food at Canteen and the service is usually good, but when the place is full it is very difficult to maintain conversation. The venue is full of hard surfaces that don’t absorb sound, and the long/thin arrangement of the space turns it into an echo chamber.
