Why they're an Icon

Executive chef: Matthew Basford

From the OpenTable editors: At this iconic restaurant located on the banks of the Chattahoochee River, the setting is as spectacular as the elegant farm-to-table fare. Grab a seat in the dining room with wooden ceilings resembling canoes and an open kitchen to watch executive chef Matthew Basford whip up elegant American dishes like slow-braised rabbit with mushroom stroganoff. The restaurant and setting itself was amazing. We sat outside in the beautiful outdoor setting along the river. The cocktails were really the star of the evening—the Tom Riddle, the Espresso Martini and the Malbec were outstanding. We just expected more “wow” from the hype about the food. Don’t get me wrong, every dish was beautiful and complex, but each was just missing something…something to make that wow factor. Food was good, but just not as great as the hype we had going there. But could have just been the day! Our server Austin was amazing and couldn’t have been better or more professional. We had a great time.

Came here for my birthday. They seated us on the porch so we had a good view of the river and gardens. Our server was fantastic. We started with the charcuterie board followed by beet salad and vidalia onion soup. I had the Australian Lamb and he had bag of fundy salmon. Both were cooked perfectly and tasted wonderful. The meal was well paced too.

Beautiful setting, wonderful bar staff, but what happened to the food. My main course of lamb was uninspiring, poor presentation, not bursting with flavor as a lamb dish should be. We were disappointed.

My wife and I had reservations on Sunday Night (6/4). We have been to Canoe before and have always have a wonderful experience and amazing food. Sadly, this visit was anything but. First the good. Our server was great, she was sweet and funny and was always making sure we had everything we needed. I ordered the crab cake for my appetizer and it was, as expected, wonderful. One of the best. My wife had a salad and she enjoyed it. For dinner my wife ordered salmon and I ordered the Beef Tenderloin. I order the tenderloin medium rare. Our plates arrived and when I cut into the steak it was certainly not medium rare, in fact it was well done. Being that my wife’s food was already here I decided to just try a piece, it was extremely dry, as expected. I stopped eating it after the one bite. At this point my wife mentioned that her plate was very good. Our server came over to see how our first bites were and she didn’t even wait for my response upon seeing the overdone tenderloin. But now it was about 20 minutes before close and we were one of only two tables with people in the restaurant. She took my plate to replace it. After about 2 minutes I told the server not to even worry about making it again as my wife was almost done with her meal and I didn’t want her to have to sit there while I ate. Our server completely understood and told us that the manager was coming over to talk with us. When he arrived) he said, “sorry to hear about your steak, can I offer you desert?” We replied that we do not eat deserts and thank you. At that moment I thought to myself “why would you offer me a desert when I didn’t even have dinner?”. The manager left and the server returned with the check. While not charging me for the steak, there was literally nothing done with the meal, not even an offer of a drink on the house. I am truly appalled by the lack of customer service from the manager. . I would suggest other places if this is what the manager considers service

I’ve been in Atlanta for years and have never dined at this staple restaurant and I would say brunch was just meh. The French toast was pretty much griddled bread slices, my soft scrambled eggs were watery and the hash brown potatoes were simply cubed French fries. The roast chicken and grits were good. The one highlight were the scones. People were friendly but had to ask several times for a refresh of coffee. Probably won’t be at the top of the list for dining in the future.

We did notice the noise level is quieter outside than inside, but since we ate outside, it could not have been a more perfect experience. And our waitress was fantastic. The basket of buns and scones is always a must for our group. And the special of the day was thoroughly enjoyed, as well as the Riverside which 1/2 the group will always order. We take Dad and our stepmom for Mother's Day/Father's Day brunch in between the two dates every year and it looks like Canoe is going to be our go-to. As we left I said "let's do this again next year," to which the family responded, "we don't have to wait until next year!" Make your reservations WELL in advance of your event because we are not the only ones that know Canoe is hard to beat. . .
