Candle Cafe West Ratings and Reviews
It was a wonderful date night. The food was extraordinary and the atmosphere was fantastic. It was the first time that I went to this restaurant. It is wonderful to know that there is a restaurant in the Upper West Side that is vegetarian/vegan. It is so difficult to find restaurants that have vegetarian or vegan options.
I’ve been a fan of this group for a long time. This was my first time at this location and it lived up to all of my expectations. Everything was perfect. The only thing I would change is my table’s location. I was sat directly next to the door, which was not ideal, but that’s an easy fix for next time
The food meets the high standards of both the Candle Cafe on the East side and Candle 79. Anyone seeking creative, good quality vegan food in a casual atmosphere will not be disappointed. The presentation is lovely, the food tasty, and the ambience warm and casual. However, the overall menu is weighted a little heavy with seitan dishes which are not healthy for gluten-free eaters. Perhaps a greater variety of various bean dishes would improve this dilemma.
Food was great, the staff attentive, and the noise level just the way I like it: quiet, so the four of us could hear each other. Only one problem, a serious one, the bathroom was not accessable to one of us who could not manage the stairs on her own, even though the restaurant claims to be handicap accessable.
I have dined at Candle Cafe West many times, generally without much enthusiasm--mostly I've agreed to meet friends there because it is very convenient to where I live. This was the last time, however. I sent back my meal (mushroom-crusted tofu) and did not re-order, having lost my appetite. It was, in a word, tasteless glop. My dining companion ate half of her entree (vegetable curry cake), and forgot to take the doggy bag (there was a reason for that). I've been a vegetarian for fifty years and especially in NYC, there is no excuse for food so utterly lacking in vibrancy and taste.
1. 2 of us arrived early and wanted to have a few drinks/appetizers at the bar before heading to the table. The waitress said we can't bring our drinks to the table because we paid for a table and they want to promote the bar. We said we would eat some apps at the bar. We ordered our happy hour drinks at the bar and the bartender asked if we wanted nuts, before we can say yes, a different lady said, "No. They don't get nuts. They have a table." It was VERY rude. As customers/patrons of the restaurant, I want to say yes or no if I want to eat something. Don't cut me off and say I cant have food. That's not good customer service. We felt extremely unwelcome. The bar was empty at this point and we would have bought more drinks and food while waiting. Why didn't you just seat us at the bar to wait instead of at the table where we can't even drink?
2. We came for a friend's birthday. The dessert came out with a candle, which was nice, but they didn't sing Happy Birthday! It was odd. We weren't ready and missed out on a good photo opportunity.
3. The food was good, but the staff was worse. The waitress took forever to take our order. Mind you, we didn't eat anything at the bar.
Candle West was AMAZING! It is one of our family's favorite restaurants--and although of the five of us, only two are vegan, everybody always leaves happy and full. The seasonal cranberry tofu with potato gratin was a standout, as was the pumpkin pie. The hard cider is also delicious! Also recommended: The Indian chickpea cake, the seitan cheeseburger, and the ravioli.
My wife and I were visiting NYC for Thanksgiving weekend and were excited to find Cadle Cafe West for Thanksgiving dinner. As vegans, we are used to making do with very limited vegan options. We were provided with a number of options for appetizer, salad, soup, entree, and desert. Each serving was a generous size and very unique and flavorful. The only downside to the meal was that we ate way too much.
My wife and travel extensively and eat out often. In the six years we have been vegan, we have never had a more fine vegan meal anywhere. Unquestionably, we will be back.
The staff was amazing. My reservation was for my Dad and I after I finished the NYC Marathon. I gave them a heads up he would be there before our reservation and asked if they could bend the rules and seat him so he didn’t have to stand - and they were great. I got there and they were super attentive. Drinks and food came in literal minutes. Superb vegan cuisine that uses fresh ingredients that are in season. Highly recommend them
Eggplant parmigiana was tasty. Curry cake didn't do a much for us nor did the side truffle potatoes. Ambiance was nice. Pink lady ( or pretty in pink?) cocktail was plane and tasted as if there were no alcohol in it. ( maybe I missed my orders? :) )
Servers were friendly and pleasant but I wish their attention was more balanced.
I was introduced to CCW by a client 2 years ago, and every time I have the opportunity, I invite friends who have never been or clients who have never been. The outcome is always the same: People love it. I bring my staunch "meat eating friends" and their plates are clean. Every time. I love the food and the juices, and the drinks. You really can't go wrong with anything there. I will continue to bring newbies to CCW and convert the City of New York, one person at a time. Great for a lunch meeting. It was pretty slow and very easy to hear.
We were a party of 4 and had the Mezze Plate, the Cajun Seitan sandwich, Eggplant Parmesan, Indian Curry Vegetable Cake, and Split Pea soup. For dessert we had the chocolate mousse pie and ice cream sampler. We left completely stuffed and loved most things. Our youngest daughter wasn't a big fan of the soup but the adults all liked it, and the server brought her extra bread and pita. All in all would definitely return and recommend to others!
It doesn't get much better!! I love this place. The service, the food, the energy. I was there visiting an old friend who I had not seen in years and we sat for a long time --- the staff were just friendly and we did not feel pushed out or anything while we visited. Classy place ---
Not cheap--- but not outrageous either
The food was very good overall, the server was friendly--and walked that fine line between being attentive and leaving us alone to our conversation. The hostess was also very nice, and took time to describe her favorite cocktails to us. We were celebrating a last get together before moving out of town, which was why we selected Candle Cafe West. It's got great food, but is very pricey so we only go there on special occasions. The restaurant is usually very loud, but it helped that we were seated at a somewhat quiet table, as I requested when I made my reservation. The nachos appetizer is amazing! And the scallopini is our favorite main course. I recommend this restaurant for vegans or anyone dipping their toe in veganism, as the whole menu is pretty delicious.
Food is of high quality and good sized, while for the price maybe isn’t the most innovative we’ve experienced. I found it very tacky that they charge you $2 for a few slices of generic store bread when we had a bottle of wine and full meal. Service was right on and atmosphere pleasant.
