Candle 79 Ratings and Reviews
Dinner was exceptional! The menu diverse and the service was wonderful! Having recently changed to a plant based diet I am noticing - there aren't a lot of options. Finding Candle 79 was like finding a Gem.
I took my Husband for his Birthday and dinner was absolutely wonderful and exceeding our expectations.
We will be back!
We picked a restaurant fairly near the Metropolitan Museum so we could have lunch after our visit there. The reviews were generally good so we were surprised to find a rather dismal atmosphere with such unappetizing looking food. Part of the meze plate was quite good despite its appearance, but the salad of the day was a jumble of vegetables and grain that did not taste much better than it looked. A glass of wine made lunch nearly bearable. Unless one is a die-hard vegan who is familiar with this type of food, my advice would be to find one of the many nearby tasty restaurants in this part of the upper east side.
I’ve been here several times but this last visit was really disappointing. I was catching up with a dear friend for dinner. We both felt rushed through our dinner . .. as if they were ready to seat another party almost immediately. We were only there for 1.5 hours max! The staff was attentive but towards the last 20 minutes when we were paying our bill, the staff seemed annoyed that we stayed a few minutes more to finish our drinks and conversation. Finding gourmet vegan friendly restaurants is difficult so we often choose this location to meet. However we will find another restaurant next time.
Amazing meal! My daughter and I sat at the bar for drinks and dinner. I ordered a spicy margarita which was made with added jalapeno infused tequila, orange liquor, carrot and lime juice and agave which was outrageous! The bartender was so nice and gave me the recipe :) We got free tasting samples of food from the kitchen, then ordered the mushroom ravioli appetizer, and the seitan main course that tasted like chicken marsala. Dessert was an absolutely delicious ice cream cookie sandwich with chocolate syrup. YUMMMMMM. We will be back!!!
We love Candle 79, and this last visit was no exception. There was only one problem: a crying baby was situated right next to our table, and his mother was waiting to be seated. She did not remove herself and her child, and after about 15 minutes of listening to the wailing, we politely asked her to do so. The hostess was not supportive, although the other patrons approached us to thank us. We love kids, and we've been there--but it is inappropriate for the hostess not to make an accommodation or suggestion to the offending patron, and to allow her to disrupt the meals of the others. Otherwise, great meal, great service, great ambiance.
Four of us dined and all our meals were fantastic, including appetizers and the surprise sushi from the chef. We were going pre-show so we actually had limited time and the food came surprisingly fast for how unique it all was. My first visit was over five years ago and it was a treat to share with friends.
As a vegetarian, it's always a delight to go somewhere where I can eat anything on the menu. I ordered the cauliflower wild mushroom risotto and my friend got the mushroom crepe- both were incredibly satisfying and perfectly portioned where we were full but didn't feel heavy.
I love finding places that I can bring non-vegetarians where they walk out and admit that they didn't even miss having meat with their meal. I will definitely be returning to try out more of the menu!
