Candle 79 Ratings and Reviews
Fantastic to find a fully vegan restaurant like this but felt the food lacked imagination. Tofu tasted unflavoured and most dishes were quite two dimensional. Food was nice, but don't think the prices justify it. Service fantastic but ambience a bit stuffy (and lots of Fleetwood Mac played (I love Fleetwood Mac but more suited to roadtrips with my dad))
Every time I come to the city, I must stop here for at least 1 meal. This is my favorite restaurant anywhere. As a Gluten Free, Soy Free, Vegan, Candle 79 is the only restaurant that I've found in which I can eat an appetizer, an entrée, and a desert. I've taken several carnivores with me over the past couple of years and not one complaint from the lot of them.
I'm both vegan and gluten free, which is quite a challenge when dining out. I was pleasantly surprised to find that Candle 79 has a gluten free menu. The menu is inventive and the sauces and vegan cheese is to die for. It's a gourmet experience for vegans. Love it!!!
Appetizers were amazing! Especially the guacamole timbale and the raviolis. I feel that the appetizers topped the entrees. However, our entrees were still very good. Our waiter wasn't very attentive and left us waiting a few times, instead of checking back in every so often we had to holler at other waiters passing by to grab him.
We have been to candle 69 quite a few times and we usually love it.
I wasn’t terribly impressed this time firstly because despite them knowing we had a dog with us they seated us in a tiny table in the middle, which was totally impractical, luckily another table became free and we asked to be moved, which was ok. Secondly I had booked on opentable using a 10$ reward and the reward was not applied to our bill and we were told that one can’t redeem rewards there.
I have heard great things about this restaurant and picked it for the variety of dishes. My chickpea cake with veggies was burned, mushy and super dry. I asked for more sauce to help spruce it up a bit. Took them more than 10 min to bring me some. By then everything is as cold. Both the sauce and chutney were delicious. The wait staff initially offered to bring me another since the bottom was burned. I declined. No apology no nothing. My friend loved her Seitan special. I thought the everything was WAY overpriced for what you get. I won't be back.
Amazing and delicious. Went there for my husband's 50th. He and I are vegan and he is celiac. They had an entire menu for gluten free ! My meat eater cousins from amsterdam went with us and they were amazed, satisfied and they recommended we return on our last night in New York. Thank you so much for everything!
I took my girlfriend here for our four year anniversary and it was wonderful. The staff were incredible and catered for every request I made, e.g received and presented flowers and brought champagne to the table when we were seated.
The food was excellent and we were taken care of and spoilt the whole night. Thank you to everyone at Candle 79 for a memorable evening!
The food was very good. Staff were attentive, and hospitable. I believe the owner, or at least a very inquisitive and sympathetic fellow diner, came up to us to ask how we found the food. She also took care of the table next us, who had a diner with dietary preferences even more restrictive than vegan. Little over-priced for what you're getting, but then again supply is low so price is high.
Our server was not too attentive to our needs. She seemed to be focused on her own needs! She did not check on our cocktail reorders, she did not check on our meals after they arrived and she did not ask us about dessert. Thankfully, her support staff took care of us so we did not go without for too long. The booth we were seated at was very small (we are tall so we struggled with the limited space). The food was amazing! Wonderful creations and made with such freshness! We will be back!
The food was extremely delicious, the staff was more than hospitable, and the ambiance was very romantic. This is a perfect date spot for birthdays or anniversaries. The vegan selection was so refreshing for multiple options, and I will definitely be back again!
I’m vegan so I always appreciate going to Candle 79 but the food just wasn’t that good. The appetizer—bbq seitan skewers—was excellent but that was the only highlight. I had a crepe for dessert that was mainly cold but then hot in a spot or two. My friend’s cauliflower was bland. There are a lot of vegan options these days. I think that Candle 79 needs to raise its standards.
