Candle 79 Ratings and Reviews
Seated promptly...my daughter and I split a guacamole timbale with crunchy plantains ... delish! I ordered Wild Mushroom Crepe (crepe was soggy, had no mushroom taste, did not taste truffle oil). Daughter ordered Moroccan Spiced Chickpea Cake. Was tastier than mine, but very dry. Not impressed. However, the Chocolate Peanut Butter Bliss dessert was heavenly as was the Vanilla Cinnamon Crepe. Was very pricey for a bunch of vegetables. Not sure if I would return.
My daughter who is 19 is a newly converted Vegan. The menu was a bit complicated for a teenager. I think that she would preferred a vegan burger and fries joint. The food was edible but not overwhelming. My test is always... would I come back again? Probably not, I was underwhelmed and the food was overpriced.
It was a pleasant find. We had Guacamole Timbale, Pomegranate-BBQ Seitan Skewer (amazing!), Wild Mushroom Crepe (Nice!), and Cannoli (Great!) for dessert. Overall, this place was fantastic in every way and we will likely visit again. Kudos to the server who recommended Skewer. Absolutely delicious.
Three of us enjoyed dinner here Dec 29th. An exceptional experience all-round. Menu was extremely interesting- it was difficult to make a choice and we were all thrilled with our selections. Excellent quality and presentation. Decent wine list and very good service. I would definitely return and would highly recommend this restaurant.
We appreciated the attention to our early arrival and shifting our 6:30 reservation up to the opening time of 5:30 as we braved the very cold temps last week. The service was outstanding, the food was delightful and the ambiance quite soothing. Thanks for a splendid dinner after a day with Michaelangelo's drawings...
Was not enamored by the place. Rhis was our second venture to this place after a span of almost 10 years. While options have improved, quality has not. Also for the price of the food i had higher expectations of the flavors and presentation. Felt like eating corner food at high-end price
Food was great, though the dessert left much to be desired. Went with my parents and my vegan sister who can be a nutter about her vegan stuff. Service was pretty poor though I’d probably be cranky too if i had to serve meat lookalikes all day and not the real thing.
We went the night before Christmas eve to celebrate my boyfriends birthday. Was not happy with the outcome of our experience even though the food was phenomenal. We ordered a number of appetizers, entrees, dessert and drinks. During our meal the restaurant next door went on fire, their restaurant was evacuated, the street closed down and fire trucks lined the street. Our restaurant filled with smoke, and the smell of burning rubber was awful. The hostess had to continually prop the door open because the smell and the smoke was so bad, so we had to either eat with an awful smell or be freezing cold. Several times we and other groups asked if we should be evacuated and we were told everything was fine. We weren't comp'd a drink nor did we get anything off our bill. For the noise from the sirens, the horrible smell, the smoke that filled the restaurant, and the freezing cold temperature we had to eat in due to the door being propped open.. you would think management would want to do something to keep patrons happy during the experience. I was a bit surprised considering this restaurant was quite pricey and the experience was so awful.
This has been my favorite restaurant since I first discovered it in 2007 while living in New York City. I now live almost 400 miles away along the Canadian border, and make sure to visit Candle 79 at least annually. This visit did not disappoint. Came in on Christmas Eve with my fiance, and we gorged on seitan skewers, empanadas, biscuits and gravy, and Benedict 79. Everything was absolutely delicious: this, coming from a vegan of 17 years and her fiance, an omnivore with an appreciation for all foods but who was blown away by the creativity of flavor and presentation of every dish here. We had a fabulous time and can't wait to come back again!
You will never think of vegan food the same after eating here. The delicious way the food is prepared leaves you very satisfied. My new favorite place on the upper east side, don’t know what took so long to come here. Highly recommend eating at Candle 79 and their sister restaurants.
Overall, we really enjoyed our meal. The service was great and food was good. I would say this place is priced too high in my opinion for the level of food and the ambiance when you compare it to other vegan options available. (Dirt Candy, Modern Love, ABC V)
Brought my sister for her birthday and had an absolutely wonderful time! Jenny, our server, was lovely and sweet. My sister's dessert crepe came with a candle even though I only mentioned it was her birthday in the reservation made almost six months ago, we were both so happy to see it! Plus we got a great seat upstairs by the window and those sweet potato latkes are to die for. Thanks for everything!
Love, love this place! The creamy Herb-Grilled Cauliflower is the ultimate comfort food (wild mushroom-squash risotto, cashew cream, kale-pine nut pesto, frizzled leeks- yum). The beet salad was delicious, even though I'm not a huge fan of beets. Their fresh and creative flavor combinations never disappoint!
