Candle 79 Ratings and Reviews
I was disappoint w the food. Steamed dumplings were terrible as was the seitan piccata special. The flat bread appetizer was excellent. They should stick w celebrating vegan food instead of taking meat dishes and trying to imitate them w vegan ingredients. My friend had the guacamole appetizer and that was good although the plantain chips were tough.
Went for dinner on a snowy day. First time that the server didn't tell us about the specials - we have been there several times before so ordered appetizers right away, but she never offered us the specials which was a little odd. Nevertheless, the food we ordered was spectacular as usual and we enjoyed every bite. The cheese plate was fabulous and the chocolate chip ice cream sandwich is the best dessert we've had there and we've tried quite a few. The soy latte and Tea with dessert were perfectly done as well. This is pretty much my favorite vegan restaurant in New York and will definitely be back. I would recommend that the light level upstairs be turned up a notch. The menu was pretty hard to read for the patrons as well as the servers :)
Went out on a date on Saturday night and the experience was absolutely perfect. The waitress was funny and knowledgable. Everything was brought out promptly and bused quickly as well. We sat upstairs and really enjoyed the view of the snow falling out the window. Would recommend to all my friends, not just vegans!
We already left a “thank you”note with our bill before we left... but here’s another one!
It is our third time dining at Candle 79 and every time we had a major event to celebrate (:
It’s always good! But this time something was different. Service was on point, all across the board! Glasses were filled at half full, dirty cutlery was removed from the table immediately after every last bite, there was always a presence of staff member to answer any needs and the server made great recommendations for wine pairing.
The food was excellent and fresh. Taste balance complimented the 2013 Binyamina Cab (which is one of my favorite Israeli boutique wines, second only to the 2013 Eliad by Chateau Golan).
First off our waitress was awesome, friendly knew the menu and was super helpful with our choices. The apps we ordered were great, the salad fresh and amazing, the entrees were where it disappointed. The portobello mushroom steak was bland at best we told the server and we did not eat it, she said that was the second time she had heard that, but she left it on the table and still charged us for it, 28 dollars down the sink. But go there for the apps, salads and the other entree’s and it is a win! Just don’ do the mushroom steak
The food was not very good. Burger was mushy and bread crumb crusted cauliflower was deep fried. It was so heavy. I tried to order a meal bc I only got an appetizer and was still deciding but he brought everything out at once so I cancelled my meal bc it would have come our way after we were done. Glad I did since the food was not good. Even a bartender made comments when i was looking for they waiter who disappeared. I wouldn’t recommend
Enjoyed eating here. Expensive but the food was very tasty and staff friendly. Had a special with garlic potatoes and vegetable gravy that I wished I could have by the very large bowl full. They even brought my daughter a special desert with candle for her birthday.
And my carnivorous husband even liked his!
Hadn't been in years and was pleasantly surprised to see how lively this place was on a Sunday evening. The food is so good and the options so interesting, it was hard to decide. I remembered they had awesome desserts and this return visit confirmed that. Check it out!
This past weekend my husband and I invited a senior citizen friend who was in NYC to dinner there to celebrate a milestone. Our reservation was for 5pm. After driving 2+ hours from Pennsylvania, we picked up our friends and arrived at the restaurant at 4:30pm to have a drink at the bar. Despite the fact that there were patrons at several tables finishing a meal, we were told that the restaurant was closed and we had to leave. Even after I told the bartender we had just driven in from out of town and had a 5pm reservation, she still wouldn't even let us sit at the bar or wait inside. She was not nice or apologetic about it either.
It was too cold to stand on the sidewalk for half an hour, so we had to walk around the corner to find a place to wait inside from the cold. We bought a water and waited at a pizza place.
When we returned to the restaurant at 5pm, we held the door open for patrons we'd seen earlier who were only just leaving the restaurant. Apparently they could stay in the "closed" restaurant, but we could not. This, sadly, but not surprisingly, made a very bad impression on our friend. They also lost out on our cocktail drinks purchase. I believe this is a policy that the management needs to seriously reconsider or make it very clear to people with a 5pm reservation that they will not be allowed in the restaurant before then.
The food was good, as we'd remembered from previous visits, but the way were we (not) welcomed in the restaurant, put a bad taste in our mouths for the evening. I am certain our friends will never return.
Fantastic to find a fully vegan restaurant like this but felt the food lacked imagination. Tofu tasted unflavoured and most dishes were quite two dimensional. Food was nice, but don't think the prices justify it. Service fantastic but ambience a bit stuffy (and lots of Fleetwood Mac played (I love Fleetwood Mac but more suited to roadtrips with my dad))
