Need to book at 1:00 AM?Other great restaurants with availability.
Flew in to eat there before it closes end of the month. Best vegan restaurant!! Will be missed!!😩
Amazing, delicious food!! Great wine selection and tasty drinks!
Candle 79 has been my family's go to place for special occasions for years. Birthdays, graduations, Thanksgivings, showing visitors how great and imaginative plant-based meals can be. This time I had
a friend visiting who has celiac disease and I was so pleased to be able to take her to a place where she could get a great meal that suits her diet. I'm crushed that this fabulous place is closing. I hope that it will appear again in a new spot.
Everything at candle is delicious but The prices are ridiculously high!!I've been a vegan for many years so I get it...I know that vegan restaurants are expensive but candle 79 is on another level....My entree was so small and I think my appetizer was bigger than my entree... And my entree was $25.
Yet everything was delicious...That's not the problem.
Friendly weight staff always a pleasant experience.
It's just that the prices are insanely high.
I had and loved the “live” (raw) zucchini enchiladas and the chocolate-peanut butter mousse dessert. Also liked the homemade ginger ale—very gingery! Service was fine and my seat in a corner by the window was cozy.
It is one of my favorite places to eat. The menu is full of good options. The food is flavorful and creative. The service is consistently excellent.
Only our 2nd time here, but loved it, sad to hear that they may not be open after 2019.
Food, service, overall great.
Great restaurant. Sorry to hear they are closing at end of year.
If you must leave your current location please please tell us where you move! Everything was fantastic!
Great place. Shame it is closing.
I would highly recommend it before it closes at the end of the year!
Best vegan food in NYC! Service impeccable. Only problem is the temperature--on a cold day, the downstairs tables are uncomfortably cold.
Great vegan meals and outstanding service. The food was prepared quickly too. It's a great place for a date.
The food is delicious but the prices are way too high considering that it doesn't include any meat, chicken or fish.... We paid $180.00 for exactly 4 dishes and one dessert..... way overpriced !
Friendly service though not very attentive. Food was awesome!
We had a lovely dinner celebrating Thanksgiving and my daughter's birthday. The whole experience was wonderful, including the kindness and attentiveness of the waiting staff, the excellent background music (New Orleans Jazz) and the delicious 4-course meal. The wine-meal pairings were also excellent. We were seven people and one of us has celiac disease. The fact that gluten-free options were included in the main menu made everyone feel welcome.
Great food, space was a little tight.
The floor on the second floor was slope and it made us dizzy then we were moved to the first floor it was very hot and not enough air.
The salads were Nothing special, the first course was very good.
Best vegetarian restaurant we visited in NYC! Innovative and delicious!
The almond cheese (and everything else) was amazing....truly delicious and unlike any vegan cheese I’ve ever had. I would return to this restaurant again and again.
Everything was delicious and I’m glad we went to pay our respects to this UES institution. While they have done a great job to maintain the food & recipes as they always were, JOY & BART will ALWAYS be missed. Candle Cafe was opening a block from my apartment when i moved here from Seattle in the early 90’s. They were my go to restaurant. The cafe & the UWS are still available & their cookbooks are my most used for years. Thanks for so many great meals over the years!!♥️
Foor, setting and service were all spectacular. We look forward to following Candle 79 to wherever they end up (and we hope it is soon).
A couple of odd things for such a nice restaurant:
1) We arrived 15 minutes early and were waiting for a fourth who came at precisely the reservation time. I though it odd that though the receptionists were very nice, they would not give us a table even though 3 people (reservation for 3) were there. The fourth that joined us was not on the original reservation. The booth sat empty for 15 minutes and only when our fourth came, were we seated, and even then it took time. When we were finally seated,it was at the very same booth that had stayed vacant all that time. I thought it was odd. Since there was no place at the bar and nowhere to stand, it was an uncomfortable 15 minutes. Not sure why they just didn't seat us immediately.
2) Our waiter seemed disinterested. The millennials at the table opined that he might have been stoned, or wanted to be. He just didn't seem to want to be there, though food and drinks were delivered as expected. Maybe he was just a laid back kind of guy, or just didn't like to talk. Still, the younger people in my party thought there was something odd.
But all in all we had a lovely time
We were seated upstairs which has a more private ‘sexy’ vibe (banquettes, draperies). The service was friendly and professional. The food and beverages were outstanding! Creative, tasty, beautifully plated and proper temperature.
I’m so sad this location is closing, I hope that the staff winds up together in a new space.
A beautiful space, great service, outstanding vegan food. Go soon because they are likely to have to close at the end of the year.
As always, perfect. We will miss this.
Delicious and wonderful as always
The best food! It was super busy and a little cramped upstairs due to a private party taking up half the space. Also EVERYONE is eating there because very, very sadly this Candle location is closing due to landlord selling the buliding. So sad. This place is great! Amazing, amazing quality and delicious recipes for vegan Food, with gluten-free options too. Eat here before Dec 31, 2019 and savor the memory!
Lovely setting, great wine, attentive staff and delicious food. What’s not to like?
I love Candle 79 and will miss it a great deal!
So sad that this gem is closing due to greedy landlord.
Great vegan food. Friendly service.
Happy to find a lovely vegan restaurant, but I hear that Candle79 is going to close at the end of this year. That is too bad. It was my first time there, and I would like to try it again, but don't go to NYC very often.
Always a great time. Server could’ve been more personable but everything was great
Really good vegan food, and lots of variety. Comfortable ambiance and good waitstaff. Extremely pricey, but still a good place to go for a special occasion.
Candle 79 was absolutley delicious! We ordered the steamed dumplings and mezze platter to start. Both were excellent. They served a sesame crusted seitan special that was great. We also ordered moroccan chickpea cake which was the star of the evening. We will return!
Candle 79 was outstanding! I’ve wanted to go here since I moved into the city and finally took my husband for his birthday. It did not disappoint. The food was outstanding and we had a cozy table for 2 right by the window. It was the perfect end to a weekend of celebrating. We’ll be back!
SO Sorry it's closing--this is one of our favorite restaurants of any kind in NYC.
My favorite vegan restaurant. Amazing food with fancy dishes. Not like other places that serve fake burgers.
