I thought the food was overpriced and bland. The cocktails were super expensive (as expensive as an entree ins come cases! and not that flavorful. I arrived right when they were opening and the door was locked. I had to wait outside for several minutes, past the appointed opening time, and then when they finally let me in, they did not greet me or ask for my name. It was an odd and disappointing experience overall.
Excellent food and a nice place to chat as the no use level is pretty low.
One of the best restaurants Ive ever eaten in. Not just one of the best vegan restaurants.
The food here is excellent but the decor, tabletops, even the white dishes are looking tired. Time to update!
I would not return to Candle 79. I was underwhelmed with the menu, portion sizes, service, and ambiance.
I think it is over priced for what is offered. The food was ok and the drinks were ok. I've gone to Peace Food and I actually crave their meals. I do not feel that way about what I ate at your restaurant. The guac at Chipotle is much more tasty. If I never eat at Candle 79 again I would not miss it. Did I mention that it's over priced?
Always a joy to go to!
The food and drink is always amazing as well as the service!
Candle 79 is my absolute favorite place when I come to New York. Wish they’d open a satellite in Tampa Bay!
I think in general candle79 is a bit pricy although I understand why, being that it is, Sustainable, organic AND vegan. I do want to mention I think it’s a little excessive to have the appetizers be the same price bracket as the entrées. We came late at 9:45 restaurants last seating is at 10:15 , The server kept warning us that we must order soon because the kitchen was going to clos The server kept wanting us to order soon because the kitchen was going to close imminently. This has always been a pet peeve of mine, because we are in the hospitality industry and this is a bit inhospitable. Not to mention about five tables came in after us. It was a slow night but if it’s a half an hour before you even stop seating maybe keep it to yourself until it’s avtually closing time. The food was good. Generally under seasoned, but wholesome and tasty.
It is with great reluctance that I write this review. I live in Dallas, TX, and as a vegan, my DREAM has been to eat at Candle 79 in New York City, the ultimate in vegan dining!!
The ravioli was good. I would give it 4 out of 5 stars. Often, though, when I eat an out-of-this-world vegan dish, I will do my best to deconstruct the ingredients so I can make it myself at home, often asking to visit with the chef, most of whom will so kindly outright tell me how to make it. The ravioli dish wasn't in that ballpark. Enjoyed it, period. Want it again? Nope.
I also ordered, at the waitstaff's recommendation, the seventeen dollar kale salad. Did I make someone MAD? Why so much kallllllllllllllllllllllle on my plate? It was piled high and wide and had no compelling flavors to spurn me on to the finish line. My dining companion remarked, "That's enough kale salad to take to a potluck dinner." 2 stars.
Finally, I ordered the polenta fries. .25 (that's 1/4th) of a star. The *only* appealing part was the crispy outside. The inside was runny-ish and not tasty AT ALL. My dining companion offered to try one and had to modestly dispose of it in her napkin. I muscled through and was able to eat a few of them.
So, there you go! That pretty much sums up my long-anticipated visit to my dream restaurant. :/ Most disappointing.
It was great there although the portion was quite small. Delicious vegan food and very friendly staff!
Very nice team running the place, helpful advice from the waiter, excellent choices of food and superb Sam Smith's chocolate stout from Yorkshire.
The atmosphere was lovely. The service was fine. The food was delicious. I enjoyed my vegan pancakes with fresh blueberries and bananas. The pumpkin cheesecake was out of this world. We will definitely return again.
Candle 79 never disappoints. Consistently high quality, beautifully prepared food and plenty of options
if you're gluten free. We stayed for 2 hours at lunch to catch up with an old friend and they never once tried to reclaim our table.
Definitely good food and abundant portions, but quite pricey.
Being a life long vegetarian/ vegan the food here is creative and oh so good. Great friendly staff.
I'm Candle79 client over many years, more than two decades at least. I'm a neighbor. Food was not good as before (I'm also a cooker), portions were smaller, prices higher... I choose a wine from the list, they did not have it. I choose a second one, they did not have too. I choose a third wine, no way. Only in the fourth time (more expensive) they had the wine. We waited an eternity between main course and desert. After 1.5 hours we were invited to go out! I had important foreign guests. Neither a coffee I'd the chance to offer them. Bad organization. Uneducated waiters, crowded and turbulent environment. It looks like Candle was transformed into a money machine, something like a disguised vegan McDonalds! Really a bad experience, especially for someone that is... I must say was an old client.
we love the food at candle 79 and highly recommend it.
Waiter was great. It was very cold upstairs next to the window and he immediately turned the heat on/up.
Very welcoming and fine range of meals. Imaginative and tastily prepared. Our waiter couldn’t have been more helpful and the manager came to se that everything had gone well. It certainly had.!
All of the food was delicious and in good portions (not enormous but not tiny).
I had the wild mushroom crepe and my boyfriend had the (cold) zucchini enchiladas. We both loved our dishes and refused to share! One of our guests was gluten free and the restaurant has an extensive gluten free menu. Everyone left happy and we were not rushed out the door. Very nice ambiance. We will come again for a special occasion.
It was very good vegan food but expensive. There was little ambience to justify the cost. If you are just going just for the food though - you don’t be disappointed .
Defenately would go there again. Food was Amaizing and people were awesome too!
Great food and service! Definitely going back here! Bringing some friends!
A bit expensive but greate service, and tasty food all vegan!
Amazing service & delicious food. The staff was kind and on point with everything. Reserved a table for my girlfriends birthday, she loved it.
Even carnivores will be happy at this vegan restaurant: the fare is hearty, delicious, delicately and robustly flavored. One of our favorite places to dine!
Very interesting, tasty vegetarian food in a comfortable, relaxed atmosphere. The dishes would definitely appeal to most non-vegetarians.
We loved everything about this place. The service was excellent and the food was so delicious. We would definitely come back again. We were there celebrating our anniversary and it was the best experience thank you for making it so wonderful.
Perfect place to take a vegan gf friend for a special birthday meal.
Simply the best vegan restaurant in NYC. Creative, tasty dishes with artful presentation. Yes, it's pricey and some locations in the 2-floor restaurant can be noisy, but you can't beat the food if you want vegan fare. The owner is also lovely.
Overall my girlfriend and I really enjoyed our time. The two things I can really comment on was I would have loved to see more creativity in the wine list especially when advertising as a wine bar and secondly the music playing (late 90s-00s alternative?) did not fit the experience of the restaurant. Other than that we really enjoyed our meal.
Candle 79 is consistently very good. I love the black bean and pumpkin seed burger which, unfortunately, they only serve at lunch. The space is pleasant and the rooms are small (which means the noise is not oppressive). The prices are on the high-end for lunch, but it's worth it for the food.
Candle is always excellent. I’m addicted to the mushroom crepes!
Candle 79 offers scrumptious plant-based foods. There’s an excellent and varied selection of cocktails, appetizers, entrees, and desserts. Every dish is creative and flavorful! It’s a beautiful restaurant with a nice atmosphere. Highly recommended!
AMAZING.Love the food always ,never been let down .
I went with my daughter to this vegan restaurant. She had been before and had had a good experience. My first time so I was pleasantly surprised at just how good it was. The amuse gueule was a baked pear with balsamic vinegar which was a nice way to start. We had two specials if only I could remember what they were. In any case, both were delicious. Will take my wife next chance I have.
My friend is vegan... I'm not, so if I say the meal was excellent, it was!
Best!!! Just the BEST. Have to try everything on the menu!!! Always a pleasure to be in that environment!
Food was as delicious as it was beautiful! Highly recommend making reservations here if you’re in NYC, even if you’re not Vegan!
