About Canal Club
The Canal Club is a Venice landmark restaurant featuring famed designer Frank Gehry’s wondrous interior of colorfully lit onyx walls and tropically themed local art. Equal parts sushi bar and exotic wood grill with an emphasis on sustainable and local ingredients, Canal Club serves dishes inspired by beach cuisine from California and around the world. Guests put together small and shared plate odysseys that make the dining as interesting as the interior. Adding to the excitement are handcrafted cocktails and craft beers from some of the best local breweries. Canal Club Ratings and Reviews
The sashimi and rolls were excellent. We were there on a Sunday night, things seemed a little less lively than I expected. I could see the location being a nice spot as you roll off the beach and stumble into great sushi and a really cool bar with crazy decor. Could have had more sake options.
We went to the Canal Club for Mother's Day. My husband does not like sushi but I do so the restaurant worked for both of us. I had an incredible sashimi plate and my husband had fajitas and eggs and we recommend both. It was quiet for a holiday - mostly because you don't think of it as a Mother's Day outing.
The drinks : The drinks and ambiance were really delicious and cool
The Service: Started out attentive but as soon as the order was put in we didn't see our waiter unless we flagged him down. We asked other waiters occasionally to get things we needed since no one checked in on us. We didn't get waters until halfway through our meal despite asking for them first thing upon seating. We decided not to order second drinks based on how long it took to get served. The restaurant wasn't even busy... there were only 2 small other tables in our section.
The food: We ordered chicken tacos, but they were not tacos. It was basically half a chicken cut up with mostly bone and tortillas on the side. It was very dry on top of that.
Could not have been happier. This was just a friends get together but it was Valentine's Day so it was tricky to find the right spot. I wanted good food, not too expensive and in a casual setting and not a crazy holiday crowd. I wanted some Asian style food but not limited to that. And yet I still wanted a sense of occasion. Canal Club delivered on all fronts! The food was absolutely fabulous, the menu a sort of Japanese/Mexican/American smash up that works. I cannot say enough about the kitchen here. This may be a cool, historic bar in Venice Beach but someone here takes their kitchen very seriously and without any pretensions. AND, since we were early (6:00). we beat the "happening" crowd and had a lovely dinner in a booth where we could actually talk! Particulars: Appetizers- grape & brie quesadilla fab as advertised, special Valentine's Day sushi roll (shrimp & strawberry), mixed platter of skewers--all great. Entrees-2 salmon and one steak all top shelf-salmon delicious with miso glaze and roasted carrots and the steak was one of the tenderest and butteriest ever. A shared chocolate lava cake dessert finished us off delightedly. Oh, and the white sangria was delicious too! It ended up not being the cheapest night out because we ended up ordering from the top of the menu. There are a lot of lesser priced options as well as what we ordered and given the quality of what we had I'll bet they are all great. So, a casual yet classy, cool vibe spot with lots of character that everyone can enjoy. Go late if you want the scene but don't be afraid to go early to enjoy the place in a calmer fashion. It works!
Well this certainly turned out to be a "quick bite" and "great value".... canal club accepted our booking, sent us a charming confirmation email saying how much they were looking forward to our visit, then, after we trekked one mile from our accommodation on the dark, were... shut. So we were there just one moment and unable to spend a cent.
Disgusted that they had not blocked out their online reservations on a day they clearly planned to be closed.
And now they ask for feedback on our experience! The phrase starting with p*ss up and ending with brewery, springs to mind.
I had forgotten about Canal Club - visited for Happy Hour, and have been back for dinner. Their staff is great, from the host to Solomon who took care of our table. Will be back. The fried calamari is FABULOUS. And so is the healthy food!! Ginger margaritas and martinis are super.
We arrived promptly to dinner for our 8pm reservation. The hostess was busy chatting with someone who was not a customer and proceeded to ignore us for over 10 minutes. Finally she sat us down as if she was doing us a favor.
Then when it came time to order food, the waiter had no idea what where the ingredients in the food, and when I mentioned I needed to know because I have a food allergy, his response was: "OK, I'll come back later so you can decide what you want"....????? So...if he can't tell me what's in the food, and I have a food allergy, his job is to find out what's in the food and tell me, not have me guess! Otherwise I'd cook a dish at home for myself!
I ended having to order sushi since he was wholly incapable and unwilling to find out the ingredients in the dishes I asked him about.
In addition, my wife, who has no food allergies, ordered one of the fancy dishes. She thought the food was just OK, definitely nothing to write home about.
I would never go back there. I rarely write a review (positive or negative), but this was a terrible, uber-priced experience. I don't know why that place has such good ratings, the owners must have hired people to write good reviews.
Ordered a lot of plates including: rolls, appetizers, sashimi, and etc. All were tasty and came out well paced. Our server, who I cannot recall the name of, was very attentive and I noticed when he came by when I was in conversation with my date would come back at a later time to not disturb us. Outstanding service! I wish I could remember the name.
Went there with a friend visiting from out of town who likes sushi and the place wowed us! This is a real Venice place! We started with edamame and chips and salsa. I had the ginger martini and he had a killer magarita(s). Honestly best sushi in Venice.two friends joined us and we also had draft local beer and sake. Plus we had miso cod lettuce cups, wings and the best wood grilled burger (we all shared) we ever had. I usually come for happy hour but the regular prices are amazing for the quality. Get the lava cake too. Late nite on weekends is happening as well.
I had high hopes but realistic expectations. The sushi was awful. Some seemed pre made and the fish was try. I had toro sashimi for a high price as a daily special and it wasn't toro at all... Any hole in the wall sushi place in LA has better sushi. If you're just coming for other food or just drinks during happy hour it could be a great hangout. I took a date for sushi and it was a complete bust.
It has an eclectic menu. Since I see it as sushi, I just can't do the mexican, carne, etc.
Sushi and sashimi with a flair. It's not standard so enjoy. Even tried a roll and enjoyed that too!
All our food was way tasty. Certainly come back again for the food.
Service is professional, prompt and pleasant.
Certainly return again for the good service.
Decor style is eclectic, modern and Venice-ie.
The only complaint is how fast bus-help clears plates and glasses. Several times throughout the meal, I had to tell bussers to leave the plate (I'm still picking at the crumbs) and not through with my ice tea so leave the glass too. Not much of a complaint huh!
Went on Valentines day.. Service was horrible. Took 15 min just to get a member if staff to
Get us a menu. Ordered our drinks I got
An iced tea and asked for sugar which never came and when the waiter realized he forgot brought me another iced tea cuz it was warm. And that's just how
Began.. Was looking forward to an amazing night and I was just completely disappointed..
First time here, awful service. When asking out waiter about the menu, he quickly seemed annoyed and told us that he and other stuff to do and he would come back. We felt rushed to order so we didn't really get to explore the menu. My date ordered the burger med-well, it came out almost moo-ing (rare-med).
The music had been shut down for the dj, but it took the dj nearly 30min to set up, I had to get up to ask one of the servers if some music could be turned on since the ambiance was that of forks hitting plates and kitchen pans being tossed - awful that there was no vibe, radio silence for a restaurant in venice.
The sashimi pizza was the only good thing i could enjoy. Not a pleasant first experience.
The decore is interesting and unique while I was ok with it, my wife hated it. The food was a real letdown. We know our sushi and this is not up to par with the LA sushi restaurants. Service was tolerable but it seemed to get slower as the evening progressed, we had to call several times to ask for the check.
