About Canal Bistro - Mediterranean Grill
The Canal Bistro is the realization of a dream for Mona and George Hanna. George's homeland is Egypt; Mona spent her first 23 years in Lebanon. They know Mediterranean cooking. George has been in the restaurant business for 22 years. And over the years, Mona watched her mother and grandmother cook for their big family from their own herb and vegetable gardens, learning the value of freshness in cooking.
George says. "It's been our dream to open our own place, to be creative with cuisine, and to have a family business that our sons can be a part of."
The Canal Bistro is that dream. "It's like you've come to one of our parties -- we've basically just moved our kitchen from home to here," they say. "We put the grill in the dining room because we want people to know that we are using top quality ingredients, and that freshness is our goal, so everything is done right in front of you."

Canal Bistro - Mediterranean Grill Ratings and Reviews
Canal Bistro is one of our go-to favorites for any occasion. With family visiting for Christmas, we wanted a tasty, healthy, quiet lunch and George and company nailed it on all counts. CB is an excellent alternative for weekend brunches or anytime you'd like either delicious Mediterranean fare of something a bit different. Locally owned, with terrific staff and some kind of magic in the kitchen--overlooking the Broad Ripple canal.
What's not to love?
Although it took a long time to get our food ordered and served (I got there at 10:40, food did not come out until 11:45), the food tasted amazing! Very flavorful, authentic, and I would return.
I wish the server would have taken our order earlier, and we had to hunt her down a few times. I think the restaurant did not have enough staff to accommodate the number of guests.
But if you have time, definitely check this place out.
Our food was delicious, although I would have liked our courses to be spaced out a little more. We weren't finished with apps when salad arrived. We weren't done with salad when entrees arrived. Our server Adam was helpful & kept our drinks replenished. The beef & lamb that we ordered was tender and well seasoned. Overall a good experience (except one nosy waitress who butted in to our conversation).
I like sitting outside by thee canal. Waiter very nice. But the Greek salad was very disappointing. Looked and tasted like it was made in the morning, would have sent it back but did not want to disrupt the occasion. the Mezzanine plate was good, fresh and plenty. They really need to make the salads fresh to order.
The only negative was the screaming toddler whose parents didn't ask to have their food packed up to remove this very unhappy child that ruined all diners evening on 8/5. I was very close to asking the manager to take control as all of us had to listen to this for too long.
We are regular customers of Canal Bistro but this last visit wasn't as delightful as previously.
We made a reservation for a party of 7 to celebrate the grandparents. The restaurant seemed not to have any table ready and told us that the only table they could set and offer to us was outside, next to the sidewalk, the option was not very appealing to our elder guests, specially on an afternoon with hectic weather, nonetheless we took it. I ordered my favorite "spicy tilapia" and the fish was really overcooked and dry. The waitress realized we were uncomfortable with the table and was very gentile as opposed to the hostess that didn't show any sympathy to the situation caused by the restaurant's lack of planning. Unfortunately we did not enjoy this last visit as we've doe in the past.
This was our fourth time at Canal and I am sad to say that it was not as good as in the past. The moussaka had way too much cinnamon and it overwhelmed the other parts of this dish. My lamb shank was dry and not as meaty as I recall from past dinners here. The appetizer ( spinach pie) and house salads saved the day. The baklava was at it's gooey best.
To begin with, our appetizer was not what we ordered, then they ran out of ice, yes ice! Then we had to wait nearly an hour for our food. Mine was ice cold....it was bad. The owner had a grad party for his son going on and amazingly, they had ice. Don't waste your time and money, if you don't want to go to Fountain Square for better Greek, go to McDonald's down the street, better service and better food.
