The surroundings are relaxed and easy going. Large potted plants occupy the free spaces and original water-colours by local artists hang on the walls. Table tops are bare and minimalist set with condiments, cutlery and fresh cut flower stems.
Old dishes make a fresh return, and modern classics like Thai-Style Chicken sit comfortably along-side Braised Beef Cheeks with roast potatoes and gravy.
Steaks are good too and a full Char-grill section on the menu features locally shot Venison and a selection of beef cuts; T bone, Fillet and Sirloin.
As you would expect all desserts and pastries are made in house, with a definite focus on classic British desserts, steamed Treacle Sponge, Crème Brule, Apple Tart, Queen of Puddings and a really beautiful creamed rice dessert served with a mango sorbet are often on the menu.
Lovely restaurant with excellent food. They were very very busy the night that we went but the service was still good and the food fresh and good
Frist time we had been to this restaurant found the service very good the food we ordered was excellent and we really enjoyed the experience
Very good food and very good waiter service food came out lovely and hot drinks refilled very quickly
Food was very hot but not much flavour, needed seasoning. Strange choice of vegetables. It is very basic cooking.
Another great meal at Callenders. Food is homely and cooked to perfection. Service is outstanding. All the staff go out of their way to ensure an enjoyable visit. Chef is flexible and caters for our dietary needs. We will be back soon.
we had a lovely meal. there i had the steak. and my wife had chicken . cook how we like it . will be going back again.
Can honestly say had one of the best meals here that I’ve ever had!
I took my mother and cousin for a late birthday present for my mum, the staff were amazing and made us feel so welcome.
The staff were amazing and let me keep extra deserts that I had ordered over night and pick them up the next morning!
I would recommend this restaurant to everyone and anyone.
It’s classy, but doesn’t make you feel out of place!
Went for the 2 course lunch special, great value and good selection to suit all pallettes. Would definitely go again.
One of our favourite Restaurants
The food is always good
Value for money and present service
Always enjoy eating here. Good food, good value and local produce.
Always a good experience but I haven't visited for Sunday lunch before - usually weekday lunchtime specials which at just £9.95 for two courses, are always excellent value.
Local glass crafts were on display and it was nice to see a local business supporting another from the local community.
I brought relatives with me on this occasion who were very impressed with everything from the ambience to the meal itself and have insisted we visit again. I was able to use my Hailsham Card for 10% discount which made it good VFM.
Although we live in Hailsham this is the first time we have eaten at Callenders but will definitely visit more often as the food & service were excellent - all four of us were very impressed & enjoyed a lovely sunday lunch here - 5 star quality & service. Thank you.
Very enjoyable lunch for 20, staff attentive and service was great
The food was fantastic and value for money. Presented well and a generous portion. The waiter was outstanding. Overall a very good experience.
An enjoyable evening & especially delicious lemon drizzle birthday cake for dessert.
Really wonderful, great quality food. Will definitely be returning.
We had a fantastic dinner especially as himself is gluten intolerant and the menu catered for this. If we are ever in the area again will definitely eat there again.
Great service. Busy for Valentine's which was good to see. Food was ok.
Not been before will certainly go again lovely food and superb service
Restaurant very cold when entering although heater was on full blast apparently. Toilets were freezing which made the evening uncomfortable, food was good apart from the sweet which we had Cheese but was straight out of the fridge therefore too cold to enjoy. However the staff were very good.
We visited on Saturday for belated New Year celebrations with our family. The food was homely, comforting and delicious. The chef/owner made a big effort to accommodate us with a special dietary request and prepared a homemade one off option - we were very grateful for his care and attention. The waiter is exceptional - his knowledge of the food on offer is superb and his level of customer care is outstanding - it’s rare to come across such a well mannered young man. We will be back soon - thank you!
We like this restaurant, it’s local, comfortable, has a good menu choice and food is well presented and tasty. The young man serving is exceptionally customer focussed and quite charming.
Second visit, great food good choice, and excellent friendly service from Jack our waiter, highly recommended.
Went here for dinner with my husband for our anniversary and I must say the food was amazing, it came piping hot and well presented and most importantly tasted delicious, there was a good selection of food choices across the board for very reasonable prices and the staff were very friendly. The banoffee pie was out of this world so definitely recommend that as a dessert. Will be going back for sure!
Excellent food and service, took pot luck in booking a table for the 1st night of our visit to the area and very pleased we did !
As always a very enjoyable family meal for Sunday lunch.
Awesome food with a good choice off local produce use would highly recommend
We popped in for an end of holiday treat and as usual were very impressed by the menu choice and quality of the food. We chose from the main menu and the specials and all hit the spot! Service was particularly good, attentive but not intrusive. We’ll be back!
Delicious food, as always, and helpful, welcoming staff. Highly recommended.
We had the Sunday Roast and all opted for the beef which was tender and tasty. The Yorkshire puddings were crispy and very moreish. Three of our party had the treacle sponge and custard and I had the Raspberry Creme Brulee - all delicious.
Great food great service a real little gem , nothing was to much trouble fantastic evening
excellent value, food, and service, just review the music which is very bland and not great
Attentive service and relaxing ambiance. Dining chairs very comfortable. Sumptuous food, friendly staff and good value made the lunch very enjoyable! Thankyou Callenders, I hope to return with my family next time!
A very enjoyable evening. Excellent variety and choice on the evening menu and the specials board. Desserts excellent too.
Very attentive waiter.
Good to find an independent restaurant in Hailsham.
Will visit again, need to work through the dessert menu at least, husband recommends the Whisky and marmalade bread and butter pudding!
Had a lovely family breakfast, the food is excellent and service was very good. The only thing I would mention is that they would benefit from a better selection of breads for toast etc.
Warm welcome, delicious food and superb service.
We recommend Callenders.
Good all round. Would go again. Parking could be a problem but we were lucky.
Another excellent meal at Callendars. The chef cooks food to a very high quality - so flavoursome and tasty. The vegetables are seasonal, cooked fresh and served hot to the table - not warmed up like in some pubs and restaurants. Good homely menu with a changeable specials menu. Service is always very good. We will be back soon. Thank you.
Excellent service and food, very friendly atmosphere, steak and Venison was cooked to perfection. Good value for money, would recommend to friends and family.
New to the area and callenders came highly recommended. Visited for a birthday and it didn’t disappoint! Service was attentive and quick, food flavoursome and good size portions and good value for money, will definitely be visiting again!
