Calle Dão is designed to pay homage to Havana's once-thriving El Barrio Chino (Chinatown). Known as the largest such community in Latin America, El Barrio Chino occupied 44 square blocks of real estate in the late 1870s. As the Cuban and Chinese cultures mixed, a unique fusion of cuisine emerged. Today, El Barrio Chino occupies a small section of the narrow Calle Cuchillo - Knife Street - from which Calle Dão takes its name. The cuisine, cocktails, and décor of Calle Dão strive to transport our guests back to El Barrio Chino when it was at the height of its existence. Calle Dão has created mouthwatering dishes seamlessly blending Cuban staples with Asian flavors. The cocktails, created by Mixologist Joy Daniel, also meld the old world with the new using historical names for libations with modern ingredients. 1857 is a bold sip of orange-infused vodka, amaretto, fresh lime juice, ground ginger, and sesame oil garnished with star anise. It commemorates the year the first ship carrying Chinese laborers arrived in Cuba. Calle Dáo's décor, the creation of its owner Marco Britti (Favela Cubana), is reminiscent of a sultry, old-world Havana restaurant with white-washed walls, distressed wood, and whirring ceiling fans. Chinese artwork, spices, and bright colors provide the accents. Step into a bygone era and enjoy a modern dining experience at Calle Dão.

We had an enjoyable meal and appreciated the food; however, we were quite disappointed by how the payment process was handled. At the end of the meal, a 20% gratuity was automatically added to our bill without any prior notice or option to adjust it ourselves. When we inquired, we were told it was due to us being a “large party”—though we were only five people, which hardly seems excessive. Additionally, the check did not clearly indicate that this charge was a gratuity, and it still included prompts for an additional tip, which felt misleading. To make matters worse, when we handed over our credit cards, we were informed of a 3% surcharge for paying by card—again, something that had not been communicated beforehand. We were forced to use all our available cash to avoid this unexpected charge. Unfortunately, this lack of transparency left a negative impression. While the food was good, the experience felt focused more on maximizing charges than on guest satisfaction. We will not be returning.

We randomly made a reservation here and found a new “go to” favorite. How did we not know about this place?! Service was incredible- our server was busy but made every interaction feel personable. The food and drinks were amazing. We all chose the restaurant week menu and had expected reduced portions- nope - full portions and everyone loved their choices. We can wait to go back.

Amazing food and service!! Highly recommend the chicken empanadas and the Revoluccion drink (this cocktail is unlike anything I’ve ever had in all the best ways).
