Callao is Montreal’s very own stylish Peruvian eatery in which each plate of food is also a work of art. Fresh and flavorful ingredients enhance each dish whereas the sleek interior provides guests a modern dining experience. Callao also serves up an array of wines and cocktails for the addition of an inviting and laidback atmosphere.
Dishes like the anticucho de poulpo, which is a tender octopus tentacle served over black bean pure with hibiscus onions and beets go to show just how much creativity and adventure go into the menu. Callao offers some of the most unique Peruvian dishes around and guests all seem to agree that it is hot location for a night out.
I was really looking forward to a great experience, sadly that did not occur:
Menu was set, was unaware when I booked and this was disappointing
No wine by the glass, only option was a 5 glass pairing or full bottle of wine
Rude hostess, acted very much like it was inconvenient to provide any level of service. As an example, at the end of the meal I asked if she could call a cab, she responded(after a very pregnant pause) that she supposed she could but after the bill was paid, very odd and offensive comment
Tension and bickering between the chef and hostess
2 of the 5 courses were very disappointing, the salmon and dessert. Salmon was just okay, panko was like mush. Dessert had an off putting texture and taste
Was our second time there, and is not gonna be the last one, that's for sure.... The place is lovely, the service and the Pisco cocktails incredible!! And of course the food is amazing, Chef made a tasting menu for us and everything was delicious from the beginning to the end, thanks Callao for another great experience!!
We got to the restaurant only to be told there had been a power outage till 4pm so some of the items were not available. I told the waitress we should have been called (that is why we leave a phone number) as it was my birthday and I should have been given the option to change reservation. The chef came out and told us he would try to do something as we don't eat shellfish so the only appetizer available was the ceviche which was very tasty but more chopped coriander would have made it outstanding. The chef didnt offer anything else and didn't come back to explain. The main course - filet mignon, which was tough but wonderful flavor, came with home cut fries (delicious) but I found the quantity of potatoes to meat was a bit overwhelming . The sauce was wonderful. The other main course we had was beef cheeks which were very tender but again a small portion for the money. The quinoa was delicious. As I love ceviche I would return but because the mains were expensive it would have to be for a special occasion.
The preset degustation menu at $29 for a 3 course meal was outstanding. Ceviche was awesome. Will go back for sure.
i must say that in regards to the service- it was delightful throughout the evening. we came for taste of mtl-which included 3 dishes. sorry, i have eaten ceviche in peru many times...it really needs to 'sing' ..this one was flat..and there were crunchy things in it which did not add at all. the lamb shanks were great.[ although they seemed more French in style than peruvian] ..the dessert...some sort of lemon flan??? there was no lemon flavor...it was more styrofoam....i didn't eat it....i love lemony desserts...this was not one of them. it was a very pleasant evening....but...
Went for Mtl a Table. The food was absolutely delicious and the waitstaff was very friendly and accommodating. Will definitely return and recommend to friends and family.
Excellent Peruvian food....ceviche was so fresh. Very appealing plate presentations. Bowls and dishes were so colourful. Delicious main course and fantastic Quinoa pudding...a first for me. Arrived alone due to one person canceling and was promptly seated at an excellent table...this during a very busy promotion, Montreal a table. Appreciated the thoughtfulness and excellent service.
It is always fun to try new types of cuisine. But my big hit was the Pisco cocktail I had before the meal!!!!
The service was very very nice!
As always food is amazing and service very good. Can't complain about it. P E R F E C T !
Everything we ate was out of the ordinary. The combination of spices, sauces and the ceviche technique to "cook" the food made the experience wonderful. I hope they will get more clients as we were only two couples in the restaurant on a Wednesday evening. Highly recommend the restaurant.
Everything was perfect from A to Z. Amazing food, amazing service. Price is a bit high but worth it.
First visit and did not disappoint. Food was excellent, service was very attentive. No complaints!
Nice peruvian restaurant. Good ambience. Fantastic wine pairing with meal course.
Beautiful decor is the setting for lovingly prepared fare, artfully presented by an attentive server.
This is the city' best kept secret.
I am no expert on Peruvian dining but given that my significant other is from Lima, I have eaten my fair share of Peruvian food.
The lack of Peruvian wine is a disappointment. The only beer offered is Red Stripe (Jamacan beer in Peru?!?) No Inca Cola. No chicha morada. I tried 2 of the 3 classic Peruvian cocktails offered and they were both very good.
The food was very good but highly stylized. I would recommend both the Ceviche appetizer and the lomo saltado main dish.
Overall, I found it to be overly expensive. There is at least one other Peruvian restaurant in Montreal with the same high caliber of cuisine but which has the extras that I was hoping for: Peruvian wine (privately imported), standard beer menu, and chicha morada.
