As usual, part-time at callahans was great. Food was good they had live music and the service was excellent. Will definitely be returning.
Excellent service, food and atmosphere. One of our favorite places.
This place is beautiful! Dinner was great. Appetizers were ok and the drinks were strong. We really enjoyed live music and the outdoor patio!
The food was excellent the service great we felt very safe from anything..
Our 3 grandchildren had the pasta with Alfredo sauce & our daughter decided to have pappardelle pasta with the same Alfredo sauce as the kids. However when the fish was brought out it came on fettuccine pasta. The sauce was different than the children’s sauce but good. Our waiter, John, was great & said he would take it back & ask the chef to get the pasta that she had ordered. The next dish came out with the correct pasta but it was swimming in 2 inches of sauce that was so salty none of us could have possibly eaten it! 3 sauces that were supposedly the same, but each one was different, with the last unpalatable. They were also not serving the pizza that was on the menu either. Our waiter was great, the beautiful deck was wonderful. But the food was terrible. This is our second time eating there since Father’s Day...and that day the 2 prime ribs that were ordered were solid fat & the smoked tri tip not good at all.
We have been coming to Callahans for 60 years & I taught one of the Callahan’s grandsons in the 70’s. Our children have grown up going there & it’s always been a family favorite. I’m hoping things will get better with this new chef (we had both times) or we will not be going back.
We had a lovely time having dinner with friends at Callahan's!!! Sitting out on the deck with beautiful views! The food was delicious and the staff outstanding!😊
Fantastic dining experience! Top notch service and food. We will definitely be back!
I was not expecting the delightful lunch we had at Callahan's Lodge. what made the experience was the service which was exceptional. The staff was so professional and lovely. The food was very good and beautifully cooked. The cocktail was hearty. The garden view made us so relaxed we stayed for a couple of hours just to enjoy the bird songs and the flower baskets. Everything from the outside deck to the ladies room was very clean. We can't wait to visit again.
Hello Erin, I would love to take the time to thank you for such a kind and thoughtful review. It means a lot to us to create a wonderful experience for our guests, from the moment they walk into our lodge, and we are all glad to hear that you enjoyed you meal with us. We look forward to seeing you again!
Food and service and music wonderful. Great spot.
Hello Eat2Live, Thank you for your kind review, it is greatly appreciated. Our live music is a wonderful way to relax the evening away and we are glad you enjoyed you evening! We hope to see you again soon for another night of music and dinning!
Staff was friendly and helpful. The place was beautiful. The kitchen did a good job but they did make a few mistakes which they corrected, I attribute this to the learning curve having to deal with COVID-19 regulations.
The lamb was over cooked, twice!
Our team at Callahan's Lodge is very sorry to here of your experience, clearly we missed the mark during your recent visit. Callahan's is a nice rustic spot with amazing mountain views. Service was good. But the food was cooked in so much butter, oils and salt. The amazingly fresh steel head trout would have been great if just grilled but they added so much salt and butter it was gross.
Delicious local food in a cozy environment with very friendly service. A great place to dine if you want a romantic or relaxing experience. Top notch.
Unless you want to stop for a happy hour drink and the exterior view, just keep on driving as none of the food (pasta, steak or entree salad, were anything special. Maybe it was the chefs night off?
Pretty place, food was ok, nothing special, the service was very slow. I’ll give them another try
Learn from my mistake! I have eaten here numerous times over the years and would generally recommend it. This time I made a reservation on opentable and requested a table outside so as to enjoy the beautiful deck and surroundings for myself and my 2 out of town guests. First, it took well over 5 minutes for the hostess to help us, even though we were the only patrons. She was checking folks in to the lodgings. She said we couldn't be seated outside because of a wedding reception on the deck. Me, being sorely disappointed that this was the first time I heard this, asked if they would comp us each a glass of wine with dinner because of them not notifying me ahead of time. She was noncommittal. When she sat us at our table I again asked if we would be granted 3 glasses of wine, this time she said she would have to check with her manager. The service which is usually spot on, was terribly slow and the server was not his usual genial, helpful and patient self. My trout was over cooked. My companions' meals were seemingly OK. We ordered a glass of wine each, at our own expense. Dessert was a teeny piece of a fruit tart, mostly crust.............obviously the hostess didn't ask her manager about the wine. Long story short, do not come here on a Saturday during the summer without making reservations directly with the lodge AND ask if there are any events happening the same day that would impact your dining experience. I learned the hard way.
We had a wonderful meal. The food was amazing. We are from out of town and will definitely come here again next time we are in the area.
All was very nice, music a little loud
The food was tasty but we thought for $10, for the Wedge salad we ordered, 1/6th of a head of lettuce with very measly amount of dressing and blue cheese crumbles was not a good value. Everything else we ordered were great. The noise with the entertainment was a bit too loud during dinner for us to have a conversation. Even the waiter had a hard time hearing us. Maybe move the stage closer to the bar area?
All in all, it was a nice experience.
While visiting the Ashland area, we stopped in at Callahan's for dinner and cocktails. We were seated right away, and were given a heads up about a large party with children expected shortly and were given an option to sit in the bar area or at a table in the main dining area, which was greatly appreciated. There was a small stage set up off the bar with a gentleman singing and playing the guitar, which was very pleasant. We ordered cocktails and an appetizer, the cocktails were great, but very pricey. The appetizer of backed brie with roasted garlic was excellent. For our main entree, I had a simple spinach arugula salad with candied hazelnuts, blue cheese crumbles and pear vinaigrette which was amazing in its simplicity and the flavor was spot on. I added grilled chicken, which I wouldn't recommend as it was dry and tasteless, which the salad itself compensated for. My dining partner order the BBQ ribs and smoked gouda mac and cheese. He said it was good, however the mac needed some sort of kick to set it off. He covered it in pepper, but suggested that a bit of jalapeno would have put it over the top. We will definitely stop in again the next time we are in the area.
So enjoyed the appetizers, the innovative entree options, the excellent service, and the live music! It was an awesome dining experience.
A surprising find and we will definitely be back! The appetizers were off the hook so we ordered almost all of them!
Excellent food and superb service. The live music was great background music and complemented the dining experience and did not overwhelm it. Highly recommend.
Lamb ordered medium well came rare.the server forgot us after delivering our entrees.it took 30 minutes after we were finished to get a check
I could’ve gone to Texas Roadhouse for way better ribs had a way better price. In general, the food was very overpriced. We actually went down to Ashland for dessert at Larks, and the choice was more food for less money. And Larks is upscale.
Started coming for dinner there at least 35 years ago, missed the Veal scalloppini , bread , and anti pasta plates as starters .
Great view only 6 diners , however loud obnoxious group of backpackers in bar that was too loud for us to hear guitar player, someone should have quieted them down.
Will not return or recommend, too far and too expensive for what you get.
The rustic lodge ambience and relaxed setting was very welcoming. Our food choices were very tasty, and I being a vegan, was pleased the cook could sub-ut the meat for a whole portobella mushroom. The Prime stroganoff was excellent, as was the creative calimari with the meyer's lemon. The salad selection was quality woth creativity thrown in. It was a perfect way to spend our anniversay with great relaxing live music. Enjoy!
Based on other reviews I expected top quality food .. and this was not it. For each dish that was served there was "something" that spoiled the effect .. overdone meat (in 3 cases), fried appetizer served luke warm, etc. There are too many good dining options in Ashland and Jacksonville to drive to this place.
good food, good service, music and excellent ambience
New waiter was friendly, service great. Food really good liked all except chocolate cake. Wine and drinks great.
Our neighbors had recommended Callahan's after going for Christmas dinner so I thought it would be a good choice for my husband's birthday dinner just after the first of the year. We were really glad we went. The service was great. The food was delicious and well presented. We weren't expecting live music so that was an added bonus. We're kind of new to the area and didn't catch his name, but he was really high quality and topped off a great evening. We plan to return in the near future. We've heard it's well worth the trip to take in the setting.
A lovely way to spend New Year's Eve! We had a fine meal in a cozy holiday setting, with friendly and efficient service. Kitchen was willing to split entrees for a nominal fee, which enabled us to try more appetizers.
The live music was a nice touch, as were the fireplaces and Holiday lights.
Stand-or on the menu for us were the steelhead appetizer platter (delicious, and generous!) and the filet mignon. (We didn't care for the (very strange smelling!) bacon dressing on the spinach and beet salad, although the beets and goat cheese were fine.)
Overall, a lovely dining experience!
We booked our res based on another reviewer who said Callahan's was dog friendly. Callahan's welcomed our border collie with open arms. There is even a cute Aussie "house dog." But come here for the food. My trout was perfectly prepared. And it's a charming dining room.
The chef came out to say hi to our pooch and check on our dinners. That was a good example of the way the Callahan staff cares about patrons. I'd come back often if I was near Ashland.
The food, friendliness of the all the staff in the restaurant was superb! We were able to take our dog into the dining area and she layer down beside our table! They are a VERY friendly dog establishment both in and outside the lodge! Our dog even made quick friends of their roaming goat, Heidi! Best in the Ashland area We will have to return in winter when snow is around as it must be beautiful!
We had such an enjoyable evening at Callahan's! The baked veggie lasagna and berry cobbler were excellent, as was the raspberry mojito. Definitely will be back the next time I'm in the area!
Lovely dinner. Great menu. The Gorgonzola savory bread pudding is to die for.
A grand lodge for comfort food as well as excellent fish and prime rib ( on weekends). Our server was excellent as were our dishes. We enjoyed the halibut and prime rib. The chocolate cake was delicious.
A+++ experience., our food choices were excellent (trout), and lodge ambience fun for the family.
Food was ok to poor. Probably should not order the veal scallopini. My Tuscan chicken was the best thing we ate. Ribs were tasteless.
We made no complaint because we were having such a great night and the ambience was amazing. The staff wonderful.
