Good food, and really great service - we happened to go on their last night ever. They are permanently closed as of 7/31/16. Too bad, we really enjoyed our meal there.
So sorry the restaurant is closed for good. I will miss it.
The only reason I didn't check everything above is that we were sad to learn the Ca. Cafe closed for good the day after we were there. It's had it's ups and downs but we were sorry to hear it will be taken over and become an Italian restaurant.
We went to California Cafe on what, I later discovered, was one of their last nights open. Our meal was very good, the service was very slow to start. It was at least 45 minutes between when we had our menus and when the waiter arrived to take our order. After learning that they were closing, it made sense. The staff seemed very pre-occupied and I can't blame them. Once we ordered, everything moved along normally and our meal was delivered in a timely manner. I actually didn't mind not having a waiter hover.
Always reliably good food...unpretentious and not overpriced... will miss this place!
Have been here with friends and family too many times to count over the last 30 years...can't believe our neighborhood mainstay is closing. :(
Hoping it will reopen somewhere close by and soon.
Thanks for many happy meals!
See you guys soon I hope. :)
Food was great. Sitting was outdoor and it was very nice. Service was pretty good but very slow.
I returned to California Cafe after several months of avoiding the restaurant. The last time I dined here the service was slow and lacking. I had a much better experience tonight that has boosted my confidence about California Cafe. The service was very good and there were multiple staff members attending to our table. My guest commented on how nice the dining experience was and shared plans to return on her own. It appears management has made some positive changes. Let's hope this trend continues.
Always a pleasure!
We have eaten at the california cafe in both los gatos and at stanford many times over the years. Se do prefer Los Gatos.
Unfortunately this time we had a problem. I have a severe Soy Allergy and advised our waiter of this. I had an allergic reaction to something. Our guess is the pannini that was made out of house. I ended up with tingling swollen lips, swollen tongue and throat plus horrible diarhea before I even left the restaurant. My face also swelled. My allergy pills worked after two double doses. Iwas close to using mu eppi-pen for the first time or even going to the ER.
Enjoyed our brunch and the quiet atmosphere. Love the coffee and muffins served before our brunch.
The outdoor patio is lovely and the service was on point. The food and wine are of mediocre quality with a high price tag, which makes it hard to recommend.
Very poor food. Will not be returning - maybe you guys need to invest in a proper chef.
Good food nice quiet dining room decent service. We were seated at table 1 close to cooking area so we're affected by smoke and smell
Good variety for a group with varying tastes, and all very tasty.
Must try the heritage pork meal . The salads are very tasty.
Gluten free options were addressed quickly
Enjoy meeting friends here, the staff and setting is good for conversations.
Missed the small plates menu and the grilled crab sandwich though.
This place has really gone downhill. Too bad - it's a lovely setting. We had to beg for shade at our table outside, server brought the wrong entree to one of us and didn't replace it until the other two had finished. No offer to comp. Server seemed high on energy drink or something...
The food was very poor quality, the service hectic, and very disappointing. We , often go to Steamers on a regular basis, and it is always good. But, for this occasion, it was a big disappointment for all of us.
We have gone to California Cafe for years, but unfortunately the prices have gone up while the quality of the food and experience have gone down. We ate here about a year ago and had a very expensive steak full of grizzle and other disappointments in our meal. Last Friday, we gave the restaurant another try. Every entre was priced about $10 more than it should have been. The salmon and chicken were overcooked and the potatoes were over salted. Thankfully, the Filet was good, but we will not be returning with this poor experience and high prices.
We ate around 1:30 so it was after the lunch rush. It was very relaxing.
It was great for our Mother's Day get together. We had a party of 10 and a reservation at 1:30. We were seated right away at our reservation time (no wait). Service was a bit slow but we didn't mind as we know how busy these days can be. I recommend folks early though, as parking is a challenge. You may have to walk several blocks.
OK, I know that Mother's Day is a difficult day for restaurants, but after our experience today we will not be back. We arrived for our res and were asked if we would like to be seated outdoors. There were 4 of us including my elderly ( 95 years old) mother there for brunch. We agreed to be seated outside but after a few minutes it was clear that my mother was too cold so we asked if the heater near the table could be turned on. Unfortunately the heaters did not have propane so we asked to be seated indoors instead. We were moved to an indoor table that was even colder than being outside. The air conditioning vent on full blast directly above the table made us ALL feel cold and uncomfortable. We first asked if the air conditioning could be turned down and after being told "no", we asked to be moved to a warmer table and were told that they absolutely could not move us. By then we had ordered so we decided to stay and I walked 3 blocks back to the car to get jackets for everyone. When our food arrived it was cold, no salt and pepper on the table, had to ask for cream twice. No one ever apologized to us and nothing was "comped" on the bill. I realize that today was a busy day, but just an apology and maybe no charge for the coffee or a free dessert would have made us feel better.
Mac and cheese had no cheese.
Mussels was not served in broth so did not have much flavor.
Waiter was not fully present.
Flys in the restaurant, two items we wanted to order were not available, the menu was not as extensive as I seen online.
Had one of the best lunches of my life. recommend the seared scallops.
We sat at the bar for 10 minutes before we were served--no apology for the delay. The service was even worse at the table. Drinks took 20 minutes to come after we ordered a second round at the table. Food was okay. Just very disappointing evening.
The setting is relaxed and quiet, though not many tables were occupied during lunch that Thursday. Service was attentive and we were not rushed to leave.
Unfortunately, we had a poor Brunch experience. 5 out of 5 were not happy with their meals. We had never tried them for Brunch before. I looked at the menu ahead of time and was quite happy with what they were offering for Brunch and the prices seemed reasonable as well. The service was painfully slow to get our drinks from the bar, so much so that we were joking that if you want a second one you better order it when the first one is delivered. The server wasn't trained very well. He managed to reach over a couple of us several times either delivering or taking away plates. He also piled plate on plate topsy turvy when clearing the table. He also came by and asked how everything was tasting while one person sat without their food yet. It happened to be the Grandmother or matriarch of the family. The sad part is that it was a special occasion that we were celebrating.
The crab cakes were completely tasteless and inedible. The short rib hash was overcooked and didn't resemble "hash". I wouldn't go back for Brunch again. Some of the poached eggs were solid in the middle.
This used to be my favorite place to have brunch on weekends, but things have changed dramatically. The service is bad, food taste awful, the kitchen is missing condiments common for brunch, the plating is plain sloppy. When I venture out to a nice restaurant on Sunday morning, I want to have an English muffin that is sliced down the middle, which is not burt and I would like it with jam - any kind of a jam. I would like my eggs to not drip when I ask for over medium. Coffee refills would be nice. I would like the crab cakes not to taste like defrosted fish patty. Basically I expected the California Cafe from 3 years ago and I got Danny's. I have heard that the restaurant is under a new management and has a new chef. Goodbye, California Cafe we used to love. Sad to see it go. We will NOT be back.
Refused to seat us near the window even thought the restaurant was nearly empty, saying they are expecting a large group. The seats were still empty when we left. Service was slow. The sandwich was just average. The pasta was undercooked.
I ordered a pork chop and it was too thick, so it was under cooked. They had to take it back and cooked twice.
I was just looking for a place to have brunch when I came across this restaurant, judging by the word "Cafe" in the name I was expecting a small little restaurant. It was quite the opposite, it was a fairly decent sized restaurant, great for families or small parties.
All of their brunch options were fun and unique, I got the eggs benedict with prosciutto and spinach and my date got the short rib eggs. Each had a different savory taste that was delicious. They also brought us muffins with cinnamon butter while we waited.
The staff was efficient, courteous and professional from the hostess seating us, to the waitress and serving staff.
The food was served quickly and besides looking appealing, tasted even better. Overall a great dining experience. I would definitely recommend California Cafe to friends and family, I will be returning again.
The servers were always ready to fill your water glasses and remove plates.
went there recently for lunch with a small group of friends. It was a lovely day and the outdoor seating area is very pleasant. Our meal was delicious. Most had the fish and it was fresh and well prepared. While it is not cheap I felt the prices were fair for the quality of the meal we had.
The quiche I ordered looked and tasted like it came out of a frozen food grocery store. It was very small (appetizer size) served in an aluminum cup (like airplane food) with little diced sweet potato pieces around the side). No greens on the side was noted in menu.
My date's ribs were tough and undercooked.
We feel the food was way overpriced for what was served.
Food was good, server was VERY GOOD but the price for lunch has been increased to eye ball opening. One member of our group of 4 was given, by mistake, the old menu and other 3 the new one with the difference in the prices. Asian Salad, which was very good, had an increase of $3.00. When that was brought to the attention of our gracious server, she went to manager to make sure that we would get the OLD price. Salad was good but not for $17.00. I don't know how many other items were increased by that much but certainly a more expensive lunch that old prices. We will think twice about going there again. Not as crowded as usual for lunch and I wondered if price increase had something to do with that attendance.
Food was good, location slightly dated. Staff in general were ok -
Our Vegetable Chips served with burgers ( which themselves were very good) came with the plastic from the packaging seal included. Same colour as the chips so could have been a major issue if ingested.
Nevertheless the team handled the issue professionally and promptly though it did reduce our experience level.
I have been to California Cafe many times and I can honestly say it seemed as though they were bought by the corporation who owns Denny's Diner. Five of us went for brunch. The waitress was nice, but way too busy to be by our table much. My coffee cup sat empty most of the time and with the ridiculous small size of their cups it's no wonder. A friend ordered a glass of wine, then changed it and decided to order a bottle for the table, but the bill reflected a glass + a bottle, it was remedied, but I'm glad we were paying attention. My crab Benedict was AWFUL; fishy (and so tiny), like it was old crab they used for the cakes thinking no one would notice. My friend's lobster roll was a joke, so small there was barely any lobster. That brings me to the price...WAY TOO MUCH for what we got. There are a lot of restaurant choices in LG, we won't be back to Cali Cafe anytime soon.
I have been to this restaurant a number of times before. This time was different. We asked our waiter what kind of oysters they were serving and he didn't know. He could only provide a rudimentary description. We ordered a good bottle of Pinot Noir. Our waiter brought the wrong vintage to the table and when I asked about it he explained that the vintage on the wine list was a typo. In addition, when he opened the bottle he didn't present it or allow us to taste the wine, he simply poured two full glasses for each of us. The wine was dramatically over chilled and when I asked about it he told us that it had just come from the cellar. The food was awful, dry pork chops and terrible pasta. The restaurant was mostly empty, I think I now know why. I wouldn't go back and I wouldn't be surprised to see them close soon. Terrible all the way around.
