Caliente - Kings Beach Ratings and Reviews
Three of us went for dinner, The youngest of us is 66 years old, so you might wonder why the very friendly server (a young man) called us “girls” throughout our entire meal! Some may think this is cute, I thought it was a bit offensive. We said nothing because he probably thought it was a compliment and he would’t have ”gotten it.”
Caliente has a nice enough atmosphere. It wasn’t loud and we were able to converse, which was refreshing in today’s restaurants.
One of us had a deep fried chile relleno, one had a trio of something and the third had fish tacos. The relleno was good. The tacos were so sweet that the individual had trouble even partially eating them.
Our pitcher of margaritas was pretty sweet and pretty watery. I would order either a higher end margarita or ask for a name tequila on the side or even some other drink, if there is a next time.
We are regulars at Caliente and love the food and ambience and while our server was great this was the second time we had an extremely rude hostess. We had out-of-town guests with us who were also taken aback but the hostess's attitude and rude and condescending mannerism. Therefore, only three stars for service, our server deserved five but the hostess earned zero. It is a shame when this is your first impression of an otherwise great restaurant.
Ok at best. Extra charge for chips and salsa, really? Good drinks but very pricey. Ceviche was tasteless and consisted of a whole avocado cut in half with a couple of tablespoons of the ceviche. Wife's chile relleno was not to her liking either. Not recommended.
I thought it was going to be better than it was:( we did get a nice seat overlooking the street...when we sat down, our waitress was nice, came back to take our order and we didn't have utensils or napkins.. asked to have candle on table lit( my daughters birthday), she never did..brought waters and a pitcher of margaritas.. we poured our own and she finally came back with utensils... my daughters meal and my grandsons came out a full 10 minutes (maybe 15) before the rest of us ( 4 more).. we finally told her to eat so it wouldn't be cold. When our dinners finally arrived they were just ok... didn't enjoy the meal, service dwindled as the meal went on.. they did acknowledge the birthday and sang and brought dessert.. the food was just not great:(
My wife and I had a reservation for 6:15 pm Saturday evening and we were between 5-10 minutes late due to traffic. My wife checked in and was seated within a minute or two of her walking in while I parked our vehicle. Once I walked in and sat down it took 10 minutes for staff to come over and acknowledge us and pour water. We told the server that we were ready to order, he took our drink, guac and meal order at the same time. Ten minutes later he came back and told my wife that they did not have any more Pina Colada mix and asked her if she wanted anything else which she told him she did not and would stick with water. He left and returned about 5 minutes later with my drink and our guac or with some chips. (We never did get offered any chips and salsa like other tables upon them getting seated.) Our food order showed up 30 minutes after we placed it with the server, they appeared average on the busy scale due to there being 5 empty tables in our area that I counted while we waited. The food was ok, but the lack of attention by the server or any staff even to fill my wife's water glass was horrible as I had to stop the server and ask that it be refilled. After being there for over an hour we were done and when the server came by I asked for a to go container and the bill at once figuring it was going to be a wait to get it. My wife got up to use the restroom and I waited for the box and bill. She returned and I still did not have either until the server looked at me and realized he had yet to take care of either. When he brought both over I took them and looked at the bill just to verify accuracy. Good thing I did as the bill included $11 for a Pina Colada we did not get. The server returned and I pointed out the error giving him back the bill for correction before providing my credit card to pay. The corrected bill was brought back, we paid it and left without leaving a tip. I have never not tipped a server or written a review like this..
I made a reservation and when we arrived (party of 8) requesting outside/upstairs table, we were told that we needed to call in advance for that request and they weren't sure they could accommodate us. Finally after 5 minutes, they moved two tables together and sat us outside/upstairs. During our whole dinner, there were at least 6 other open vacant tables that could have seated us.
Come on - you haven't updated your menu, service is still has gaps. And you can't accommodate patrons who want to eat dinner?
Great location, especially upstairs on the deck. Food was good, service was okay. I'd go back, but just know that it's not authentic Mexican food. It's more tex mex with fajitas, sauces, etc. If you go, just know that service is not super fast or comprehensive. Perhaps we had a new server.
We had reservations and were seated upstairs in a great area. Downstairs was maybe 2/3 full. Our food took forever and I mean 1 hour from ordering. Our server kept apologizing but it was a bit ridiculous and worse since we had 2 toddlers with us. The worst part was when the food arrived. Very mediocre at best. Rice was way under cooked, my wife's chicken mole was horrible, she only took 1 bite. My chicken fajitas were flavorless and my 18yr old son had steak fajitas and he said they were not good. Tortillas were room temp. Someone was not watching and managing that kitchen. Even though it may have been busy, food quality should never suffer. They knocked about $45 off the bill, 2 drinks and my wife's plate but it was still $165 for a not so good meal. The margaritas were really good and our server did a nice job (sorry I can't remember her name). Hostesses were a bit stuck up. Not sure I'd go back for the food.
First time here. Excellent food, very good service, (Greg) made a reservation and asked for outdoor seating. It was honored. The portions are rather large. I had shrimp fajitas and for $23, it could have easily served 2 people. The wine choices were slim, and like most Tahoe restsurants, overpriced.
We would return
The upstairs deck is very nice and is a fun place to eat. It has plenty of large umbrellas so there is plenty of shade. The food is very good, and portions were very large (plan on taking some home). Also, our server was very friendly and efficient. This restaurant is definitely one of the best places to eat in this area.
High quality Mexican food is very good. My only complaint is the noise level. Seems to attract large groups of rowdy people that make lower decibel conversation difficult. Even the waiter had a hard time hearing our order. It is a ski town, though, so understandable. Happy hour is the best in Tahoe.
3 Large parties of 15 to 16 on each table next to our table was extremely loud and made our dinner very unpleasant. Love the food and our server was great and took our small table order first before his large 3 tables was appreciated. Squeezing 3 large tables all together around two small booths is miserable for the small tables. Have always enjoyed eating here but not much fun with the large groups. I will return because I love this place but hope the management limits how many large groups at a time in the future. Thank you!
The service was terrible. We were ignored for more than 30 min. No menu was given to us. the food is way to copious. You should not serve these huge portions that no one seems to be able to finish. Why waste so much food! You could do better with normal portions and better service. The bill was also way too high, although I don't mind paying good money if the food is worthwhile. We will not come back - sorry.
The food is typical Americanized Mexican fare - tasty, but nowhere close to authentic. Very much like a Chevy's, but Caliente's atmosphere is nicer. Portions were way too much for one person, forcing a diner to either take it with them (difficult for the many tourists to refrigerate and re-heat) or leave it behind (wasteful, especially considering most entrees are $16-$18).
Service was mediocre - the server was pleasant, but not entirely useful. One of our 7 meals was not served along with the others. After 10 minutes of waiting, we had to flag down the server to ensure it was coming, got a blank stare, and then presumably left to inquire. Someone else eventually delivered the meal - no acknowledgments or apologies from anyone that the meal was so late that many of the rest of the party were nearly finished.
Would I return? No. King's Beach contains many other restaurants with better food, service, and value.
This was a fun place. However, both couples used different credit cards and both numbers were stolen. This is a serious problem. One credit card had a fraudulent charge of $3800 and the other card received a fraudulent letter supposedly from their bank requesting the cardholder to resubmit all their credit information.
Is there some way for Open Table to make sure this restaurant investigates the situation? Would love to be kept informed. We won't dine there again unless the issue is resolved.
