Calcutta Grill - Golf Club at Newcastle Ratings and Reviews
Although I have been very happy with the quality of breakfast at Calcutta Grill - Golf Club at Newcastle, on my visit 11/18/2017, the french toast was gooey inside and the bacon under-cooked. Service, ambience and view great, but food this time was not up to the usual high-standard I have come to expect.
This is a place we bring all our out of town guests; the view is incredible and the food is good. And this is a quick and easy go to restaurant for us because we live so close. The prices do seem to have gone up making this a more expensive quick dinner option.
Our waitress was awesome...an absolute sweetheart. Felt bad for her (and us) to have to be around the totally foul mouthed and inappropriate table of six beside us. First time we have been around this type of behavior at NCC. However it is otherwise one of our most favorite places for special occasions (49th wedding anniversary) so I am sure we will be back in spite of this hopefully one time disturbance.
The food was good, but was barely warm. I don't like my meat placed on top of my mashed potatoes as the blood isn't appealing! This seems to be the latest craze at many restaurants. I don't like broccolini; it's bitter. The bar should carry more varieties of bourbon. The service was of the highest caliber.
We went for my daughter's birthday. Requested a view table in advance; was seated out on the deck(kids preferred) but back against the wall. There were tables up front available; set for 5, so I didn't insist, but then, they kept seating a couple of Party for 2. Hmmm.
The appetizers that we ordered, chowder, calamari. Caesars salad and French onion soup was good.
The prime rib and steak that was ordered was good, but my kids' seafood pasta was very salty.
The bag pipe playing at dawn was a nice touch, but the place must've had more guest than expected as service was slow. At one point, a guest dropped a wine glass, shattering it on the deck; leaving broken glass everywhere which wasn't cleaned up for at least a good 1/2 hr; that was poor management and a hazard.
I feel like this place could be such a gem if all the pieces were in place. I recognize that this is a restaurant that typically is frequented by golfers post-game, but with the view that they have, it should also be a great destination for romantic dinners or upscale dinner with friends. While the service was nice enough, and Dante our server was wonderful, we stood at the empty hostess stand for so long we were wondering if we were in the right place. When she arrived she casually addressed us and brought us to our table, which had a very nice view. To start, we looked at the drink menu and were astonished at the prices of the drinks - $15-17 for pretty standard drinks seemed outrageous and I ended up ordering a glass of wine instead. I had the house salad as a starter, which was delicious and could easily feed two. For our entree, I ordered the tenderloin and my husband the prime rib - both came with mashed potatoes and broccolini. The meats were delicious, but the sides left a lot to be desired. The mashed potatoes fell apart when I put my fork in which made me wonder if there was any sort of cream or butter in them to bind them together and the broccolini was practically raw. The prime rib was on top of the potatoes, which ended up unappetizingly soaked in blood/juices of the prime rib. It was surprising that the sides would be that poor given my impression of the restaurant and the price of the dish. To me, Calcutta is trying to be an upscale restaurant, but if you are going to charge upscale prices (especially the drinks), there are higher expectations - the amazing view can only take them so far. Drop the drink prices to 12-14 (like The Met) and I'll happily order 2, and make sure the sides are made as well as the main dish. When we got the check ($140 before tip) I kind of felt like it wasn't worth it.
Very disappointed. We have eaten at this restaurant several times. When we checked in the host acknowledged the reservation notes of the friends 50th bday we were all there to celebrate. From there it was all down hill. We didn't get a view table even though they were available. We were told it was because we had 8 in out party. We had to ask to order drinks, bread and food multiple times. Our server had one other table and constantly disappeared. We were told she was the only server we could have for a large party. From beginning to end, service was lacking. She said she was busy when we asked for things! When you spend $600 on a meal you expect more. Doubtful we will be back for more than the casual get together in the bar. Did I mention she didn't even acknowledge his bday, just set the desserts down and left. Even those were delivered wrong. We need better options in Newcastle.
I took my friends for birthday lunch. it was Saturday & they only served a brunch.
Our waiter was friendly but he made a mistake for my friend's order & brought her a wrong dish.
He didn't come check if we were ok or not. He didn't bring butter & jams. No refill for coffee, etc.
We have been going to Calcutta Grill since it opened years ago and keep hoping that one day the food will come close to being worthy of the setting and the view at Newcastle. So far, we continue to be disappointed on every occasion. The food is mediocre at best, and the service is inconsistent. The best to be expected is ordering a few of the appetizers. We keep going back when friends come in from out of town because of the setting, and every time, we say it's our last. This time we mean it!
THE CLUB NEEDS DIFFERENT MANAGEMENT AND A DIFFERENT CHEF!!!!
Hostess was mediocre at best. Waitress was friendly but seemed like she was inexperienced and had too many tables she was tending to. Drinks took too long to get. Food took too long to get. French martini is as too warm and not very flavorful. Specialty drink was supposed to have lemons but came with limes. New York strip was just ok, cooked good, seasoned well but quality of meat not so good. The king salmon dish was excellent. Overall seemed like not enough staff for a Saturday night. I don't think it was the quality of the staff present, Just not enough staff.
While the view was fantastic and the food was good, we have to give a special shout-out to our server, Conner. He was fun and professional and really made our evening. My father-in-law said he was the best server he'd had in years.
Definitely an asset to Newcastle!
Great atmosphere and view when the sun is shining on the hills and lake.
Food was excellent with one exception. 2 people in our party ordered the filet mignon. It was cooked with lots of spices and it seemed very greasy. Neither would order it again.
Salmon was excellent and so were the desserts.
One of the greatest views but your food is not even okay.I personally never leave food on my table but common your food is not even close to GOOD. You guys really need do something with it. I am not trying to be offensive. Service was really good but the food.
The food was very good. Our server did a good job. But we had a group of five people and every seat was dirty with food and crumbs. The table was dirty with food and crumbs and it did not look like the wood floor had been cleaned or swept for a very long time.
This is a classy place where you expect attention to detail. Overall experience was good, but we were surprised that things were getting overlooked. Management needs to review some procedures on how their bus/wait staff turn their tables.
The view was fantastic! We were treating several out of town guests. The lack of service was very disappointing. My husband had to find the waitress twice! She never came around to take our order for a table of 9. Once served, she disappeared. We had to ask another server for our bill.
The food was also disappointing.
How can you ruin an omelet & breakfast potatoes?!
Had a family birthday dinner at the Calcutta grill while enjoying second to none views, great service and delicious food! Perfect for any occasion and a wonderful menu with seafood, chicken, steaks, vegetarian options and lots of gluten free options. If you are in the Seattle area, this is a must!
The view is great, and waitress was accommodating to our request to change table because of a cold night, and took off the bill the birthday cake and an appetizer ... but that is not enough to make this a good experience
Food was not good, not salted, came cold to the table
White wine did not come first in a ice bucket, and when it came there was too much ice the bottle could not fit into the bucket
Waiter/Waitresses wore dirty clothes, did not take our plates off the table before bringing the next ones
This was our first time at Calcutta Grill. It was great venue and the food was excellent. Unfortunately, the service didn't match. Server was inattentive - we had to ask for plates to share an appetizer. Later, we realized we'd never been offered bread. Appetizer was very slow to arrive, but I'm not sure when the order was actually placed.
Since we were entertaining an out-of-town guest, the poor service was disappointing. I'm still recommending Calcutta on the assumption that service is generally better than we experienced.
