Calcutta grill is located in the Newcastle Golf Club, so it has a classy ambience and more a nice view of the grounds and more importantly a great view overlooking the Seattle area and beyond (mostly west and south). Alcohol/bar is expensive, but the appetizers are tasty. Dining on the patio is recommended, weather permitting. Food menu is limited, but all the choices are well implemented. (BTW, despite the name, no Indian food is offered.)
Service was horrible, our server didn't know what was in a dish. Total 2 vegetarian options in entree and no veg in appetizers. Menu had fine print of 'more vegetarian/vegan options available', our server bluntly said no there is nothing else. We had wine and caprese and left. It was my birthday so it was kind of sad experience overall. Only reason to go there is for the view. Not going back or recommending to anyone
Excellent service and meal. However it was very pricey at over $200 for 4 persons.
We absolutely love to eat at this restaurant. The views are to die for on a sunny day.
My friends and I were disappointed in the service this time. We had to ask 4 times for coffee and when it finally came we're told that the had to brew it, and 'it was on the house.' Took forwpever to get the bill paid as our waitress would disappear for long periods of time. Food came in a short timeframe after we ordered, but I was disappointed that it was cold.
I love the Calcutta grill, but this time it just didn't meet its normal quality.
My brother ( a local ) recommended rhe Calcutta for the view, but said the food was "OK". We all thought the food was much better than "OK", the view stunning, and outdoor dining area very pleasant. If the weather is good, this is a great destination. Without the view (i.e. September to June) I would still say it's quite nice, but not remarkable
Good food. The scenic view is amazing! Quite possibly the best view in Seattle. It's worth it just for the view. Service was very good. The ambiance was elegant. Despite the view and the elegance, the prices were surprisingly very reasonable. I will definitely go again. This is a good place to take a date.
Food was good and service was good. The view is Awesome! Great Date night with Putt Putt Golf before dinner.
Service was amazing and the food was delish too! Love going here for birthdays we have a party of 8 normally and the table they put us at is always big enough you don't feel crammed.
We love to come here for a very decent brunch with a spectacular view. We did arrive about 10 minutes late due to traffic and they'd notified OpenTable that we didn't show. It looks like the situation did get rectified, though, and we had no trouble being seated. Service that day was uncharacteristically very slow and forgetful. But we weren't in a huge hurry and the view is so great and the seating on the patio quite comfy, so we were content.
Calcutta Grill served a fantastic lunch. The food was superb and the wine selections were excellent; however, it is slightly pricier than other restaurants, particularly the wines by the glass. The view and ambiance makes it worth the cost. The service was excellent.
Fantastic food with amazing views. Perfect for out of town guests.
5 star location but 1 star food...and today 1 star service. We've been going here for many years but today may be the last. The quality of the food, and selection, has been declining for some time. Today the Cobb salad lacked enough dressing, and the sliders were either rewarmed or too long on the hot plate. It was 10 minutes before the wait staff could spare the time to pour water, and another 10 before anyone asked to take an order. When it was over, apparently since no one asked if we would like more, we had to track down the waiter to got the bill, a whopping $60 for very little. This place deserves new management so we can get a meal and service that matches the view and price.
Nice people, great view, great food, nice change of scenery. Plenty of new things to check out.
We don't go out all that often, mainly for birthdays, anniversaries and such. After reading some of the reviews previously posted, I knew that The Calcutta Grill wouldn't respond with any niceties and that is OK. I had mentioned in Open Table that it was my spouses birthday.
The service was excellent. The view is one thing that this place is all about.
The food is another story... I had the Lamb Burger and that was very good - cooked how I ordered it.
My spouse ordered the Asian Chicken Salad. It looked very good but upon her starting to eat - out came what appeared to be a black semi transparent piece of cellophane maybe 3 inches long. We called the wait person over who of course was apologetic (might I say though not that apologetic). She offered to make a new salad and we agreed.
Accidents happen but not like this. The cellophane or what ever it was was obvious and visually stood right out. Food grade cellophane is not black. My personal feeling is that the "Chef" should have responded personally to this incident. But, then again, perhaps the management may not really care.
The salad was gratis . Considering the problem, the whole meal should have been.
The staff is wonderful but the menu changes are disappointing. You can no longer eat at the Toad, the day boat scallops and risotto cake with wild mushrooms are gone, there's no more crime brûlée, you can't get the salmon chowder on the dinner menu, they reduced the burata portion of the caprese salad by half, and you can no longer order food from the pub menu at dinner. Since you can't sit in the pub with kids it's very discriminating. Our daughter couldn't order fish and chips but had to eat off the kids menu. We normally like the wings or firecracker shrimp as an appetizer but couldn't get that either. Plus the online menu through open table still shows the old menu so there's no advanced warning of the changes. Great staff and food but very poor menu/management changes. Especially for those of us who live in the neighborhood and frequent the club
The increased gf options make this a go to for us for relaxing dinner or after work snacks and drinks. Always a treat to enjoy dinner on the patio over looking the lake and city in the background. Just perfect.
You need to go there on a sunny day to enjoy an awesome view on the Olympic range and lake Washington.
The food was good, but you mostly pay for the view and the high quality service.
Beautiful atmosphere, forever views and fabulous food.
Went for my moms Birthday and she really loved the scenic view of the golf course and you could see downtown Bellevue .
Appalled at the management and staff. Will never return.
We took out of town guests on a sunny summer night. The view was outstanding and they were thrilled with Salmon they had. We chose other entrees which were also delicious. Perfect choice for showing off our area and food.
Food was mostly tasteless - undercooked prawns with the bruschetta. Didn't bring appetizer plates for the, well, appetizer. Main courses were bland and gloppy (seafood pasta just all tasted like butter, and the ravioli was similar). Even the complimentary bread was so-so and not very fresh. Beautiful views no doubt...
My dinner came out lukewarm. The asparagus was dried out and overcooked. Pretty poor effort, and yet very surprising for this place.
We've had many special occasions at the Golf Club at Newcastle, so I thought I'd definitely like to go back there for a special birthday dinner for my husband. Our food was excellent, but boy did they miss the mark this time for making anything seem special to mark his birthday. I had said it was a birthday on the reservation, but they never mentioned it, never said much when my husband told our server it was his birthday, and didn't even put a candle in his expensive piece of Tiramisu. So many establishments have a complimentary dessert for the birthday person. Not Calcutta Grill, and guess they can't even afford a candle if you're paying for the dessert. Yes, the food was good, but it could have been any night of the week for that. We expected more and were underwhelmed, to say the least.
Amazing view. Service was friendly and professional. Three in our party ordered the 6-hour short ribs and raved about them. Others had the chicken and the salmon and big were very good.
I've always loved dining here with my family, but recently, they made a rule that food from the "pub menu" cannot be ordered in the dining room. This is a huge bummer, because my teens love the burger, fish &chips, french dip, etc. This is a huge disappointment, and instead of ordering a $35 steak for the kids, we'll go elsewhere.
Great Salmon chowder, $5 wine at happy hour. Best view in the city.
we enjoyed our father's day dinner there, the food was tasty, service was great
Delicious dinner, great atmosphere and a spectacular view!!
The view is the main attraction to this location, but the Calcutta Grill has a very nice menu at Great prices. Try the Short Ribs! You will love them.
The food was good at lunch-time but the service was slow although it was not a "full house". Delays in getting drinks refilled and requesting a desert menu. Also, had to "walk" the bill up to desk to pay as the server did not return to finish. Love the view, even on a cloudy day. After moving to Southern California, I was looking forward to returning to New Castle, again the food was good and I will return.
They used to have a pub menu in addition to the main dining menu, it was good for the kids. Consider this change if taking the family. Dining menu is too sophisticated - and expensive - for children.
Delicious Dungess crab egg Benedict. Great salads and a tiramisu to die for...
Very enjoyable visit with friends. Very busy Sunday dining time so service was not perfect but still acceptable.
Good meal, good service. I loved the added touch of the man with bagpipes outside. I would add more good Washington wines to the menu. Thank you! Greg Merimee
My sister and I treated our mom to a birthday lunch at the Calcutta Grill on a Monday. The server, while nice, was quite slow and inattentive. The food ($80 for 3 people with no alcoholic beverages) was only mediocre, if not over-sold by the server. As I had mentioned the special occasion on several occasions both before and during our visit, I was surprised to realize they do nothing special to mark the occasion. While the view is beautiful, I was disappointed and wouldn't spend the time, money or energy heading back any time soon.
Wonderful place with panoramic views, good food, and great ambiance.
Excellent service and food. The views are amazing of the city skyline.
Our group had a great time and our waiter took good care of us. I believe his name was Cameron. Dinner is always nice but some find the menu limiting.
Overall a very nice evening and a good time was had by all.
