Calcutta Grill - Golf Club at Newcastle Ratings and Reviews
We went here for my Wife's Birthday recently. We also had family from out of town and were excited to show them the Calcutta Grill, as we have really enjoyed it in the past. Unfortunately, the dinner went down hill fast. Over the evening, this included:
- getting food out of order
- missing a salad for my daughter, then not being able to find our server.
- The replacement salad was obviously thrown together from scraps.
- my wife's dish being undercooked.
- Waiting 15 minutes for a replacement, only to get her original plate back, with half still undercooked, but the rest overcooked
- Not being able to find our server again for a long time
There was more, but we had really given up at this point. It is unlikey we will return.
Our experience was a bit schizophrenic here for a Pre-Valentine's Day date. We were seated immediately to a quiet table in the corner with a magnificent view of the golf course, Bellevue, and Seattle Skylines with the lakes in-between. We started with a bowl of French Onion Soup (pretty darn good) and the beet/heirloom carrot/goat cheese dressing salad (pretty tasteless). My wife ordered the Sea Scallops with White Beans and Chorizo and I ordered the signature dish 6 hour braised short ribs. The Sea Scallops were cooked nicely but if there were any more salt in the dish, it would be inedible. Overall, almost good, but not really. My braised short ribs were another story. I kinda knew it was gonna be disappointing when the black tennis ball-sized piece of short rib kinda rolled around on my plate instead of squished into tender pieces under my knife and fork. The potatoes au gratin were undercooked and had an apple like texture. Pretty disappointing. The cuisine this time was a fatal flaw for the Calcutta Grill, but view and service were both excellent. I'll mention that we've had good experiences in the Pub next door several times, but were pretty sad to not have restaurant side be similar. PS: To note the great service, I left my coat and had no issues getting it back the next day with a smile from the friendly staff.l
Went for the view with an out of town guest. The service was non existent. The wait person was OK but we had to ask for water every time it was needed and then the bus person would only fill up the glass for the one who requested it. Looks like they have a bunch of young, inexperienced kids there who don't know what their job entails. I wasn't even done as I wanted to look at the dessert menu and the server brought our bills.
A fantastic venue for a small 50th birthday celebration! Our food was fantastic- fillets, a chicken dish, a seafood pasta dish- num! The ambiance was perfect- not loud at all. Our server - Donte?- I think, was extremely accommodating and friendly. He had great suggestions and made us feel like the most important table in the room. The view is spectacular any month of the year. I highly recommend this restaurant for brunch, lunch and dinner. And those Bloody Marys? Famous!!!
Caprese salad had only one piece of cheese with 5 slices of tomato. Not a great value for $13. And the salmon was over cooked. To top it off, we were given someone else’s food - twice; they did at least acknowledge their mistakes right away. Beautiful facility in a great location; if run properly I think it could be a gold mine. Oh well.
We spent over 200 and the food was just mediocre. Very dissiponted with the French Onion Soup, Short Ribs, seafood Pasta (so fishy the seafood was not fresh) and the desserts tasted like they had been in the refrigerator for days. Our bottle of wine was good. Such a sad experience for a place that sits on top of the world.
Always takes a bit of time for service. Pretty pricey, but it's always been. A bit of a limited menu. Ordered an appetizer which did not come before the meal. Came with it...appetizers should come first. A friend's fish tacos were very tough and a salad which came with the portobello mushroom sandwich was very wilted.
My guests thoroughly enjoyed the fare and the scenic view. We came early afternoon and avoided the crowd. The waitress was great and attended to our needs. Allix was very sweet and accommodating to take pictures, so was the receptionist!!!
We love taking guests to this place.
Our niece will be celebrating her b'day at a private lunch in the Spring!!!
Thanks for providing our out-of-town guests with a wonderful lunch and setting!!!
You simply cannot beat the stunningly gorgeous views here! The food is good, although not stellar. Service very spotty with untrained, inexperienced wait staff, nice but not gracious nor adept. Good spot to grab a bite but don't expect an extraordinary dining experience.
Although I have been very happy with the quality of breakfast at Calcutta Grill - Golf Club at Newcastle, on my visit 11/18/2017, the french toast was gooey inside and the bacon under-cooked. Service, ambience and view great, but food this time was not up to the usual high-standard I have come to expect.
This is a place we bring all our out of town guests; the view is incredible and the food is good. And this is a quick and easy go to restaurant for us because we live so close. The prices do seem to have gone up making this a more expensive quick dinner option.
Our waitress was awesome...an absolute sweetheart. Felt bad for her (and us) to have to be around the totally foul mouthed and inappropriate table of six beside us. First time we have been around this type of behavior at NCC. However it is otherwise one of our most favorite places for special occasions (49th wedding anniversary) so I am sure we will be back in spite of this hopefully one time disturbance.
The food was good, but was barely warm. I don't like my meat placed on top of my mashed potatoes as the blood isn't appealing! This seems to be the latest craze at many restaurants. I don't like broccolini; it's bitter. The bar should carry more varieties of bourbon. The service was of the highest caliber.
We went for my daughter's birthday. Requested a view table in advance; was seated out on the deck(kids preferred) but back against the wall. There were tables up front available; set for 5, so I didn't insist, but then, they kept seating a couple of Party for 2. Hmmm.
The appetizers that we ordered, chowder, calamari. Caesars salad and French onion soup was good.
The prime rib and steak that was ordered was good, but my kids' seafood pasta was very salty.
The bag pipe playing at dawn was a nice touch, but the place must've had more guest than expected as service was slow. At one point, a guest dropped a wine glass, shattering it on the deck; leaving broken glass everywhere which wasn't cleaned up for at least a good 1/2 hr; that was poor management and a hazard.
I feel like this place could be such a gem if all the pieces were in place. I recognize that this is a restaurant that typically is frequented by golfers post-game, but with the view that they have, it should also be a great destination for romantic dinners or upscale dinner with friends. While the service was nice enough, and Dante our server was wonderful, we stood at the empty hostess stand for so long we were wondering if we were in the right place. When she arrived she casually addressed us and brought us to our table, which had a very nice view. To start, we looked at the drink menu and were astonished at the prices of the drinks - $15-17 for pretty standard drinks seemed outrageous and I ended up ordering a glass of wine instead. I had the house salad as a starter, which was delicious and could easily feed two. For our entree, I ordered the tenderloin and my husband the prime rib - both came with mashed potatoes and broccolini. The meats were delicious, but the sides left a lot to be desired. The mashed potatoes fell apart when I put my fork in which made me wonder if there was any sort of cream or butter in them to bind them together and the broccolini was practically raw. The prime rib was on top of the potatoes, which ended up unappetizingly soaked in blood/juices of the prime rib. It was surprising that the sides would be that poor given my impression of the restaurant and the price of the dish. To me, Calcutta is trying to be an upscale restaurant, but if you are going to charge upscale prices (especially the drinks), there are higher expectations - the amazing view can only take them so far. Drop the drink prices to 12-14 (like The Met) and I'll happily order 2, and make sure the sides are made as well as the main dish. When we got the check ($140 before tip) I kind of felt like it wasn't worth it.
