Calandras Italian Village Ratings and Reviews
Went to Il Vecchio Café at Calandra's for lunch. What a deal. $14.95 for salad or soup, main course (sandwiches, etc.), a large cannoli and coffee or tea. I had a salad (great dressing), a veal parm sandwich, the cannoli and coffee. Everything was delicious. Dining room is very nice looking and not crowded at lunch time.
Food is very good. Service is good. Everyone is friendly. The ambience needs work though... It's pretty and very appropriately themed, however, it's crowded and the tables are close together. The chairs are uncomfortable. It's a good spot to have drinks and dinner with family or friends but not for a romantic night out....
Not busy on a Sunday afternoon - still waited exceptionally long for service.
Only about 3 tables seated when we arrived- still were seated next to a large party with 3 babies 2 feet away from us. Then waited close to 30 minutes for our waitress to check on our meal after it arrived - never came to check on us. Just wanted our check after we finished. Waited so long that we had to ask the manager to get it for us. Really is no excuse for that to have happened.
Been coming here for years. This past visit was a disappointment. I wanted gelato for dessert. When I asked the flavors, server told me he didnt know. So I offeRed to walk to the case with him and make my choice. He scoffed at me. Seriously?? Our bar charge was incorrect, more than double. It took them over 15 mins to rectify it. And not a small compensation as a thank you for us pointing out their programming error. Can only imagine how many others walked away paying more than double.
Our server was adequate but he seemed like we were bothering him. Polite, but no personality.
The prices are on the high side, but we like the vast selection and the outdoor dining. This past experience is having me question whether or not we will return
Always good and consistent food. Generous portions that never leave you hungry. Definitely one of our, "Go to" places to eat. Their bakery is awesome! My all time favorite is their red velvet cupcake. If you love a great cheese steak, walk around to their deli. Great paninis too.
Usually my husband and I come here with a coupon. Not for nothing, but Il Vecchio Cafe is a little pricey. Most meals are over $20 (chicken, fish, beef). The food is good, don't get me wrong, however I like to save the money so I can stop at the bakery afterwards :) -- and one glass of sangria was $9.50, that was a little shocking to me. But overall -- would recommend to anyone. Just be prepared for one dinner (sans appetizers mind you) to be around $70-$80 after tip.
The food and restaurant was excellent. The service was not, not sure if it was the time of day or what. We were not properly greeted, the waitress acted as if she was doing us a favour. I mentioned that we were there to celebrate our birthday, they did not even mention happy birthday,it would have been nice since I took out a friend for her birthday and so to comfort her in the loss of her grandmother.
I have been there before at a later time and service was much better.
This place is truly an escape! From the moment you enter, you are in their "world"! They have terrific dining rooms, the menu is diverse but authentic italian fare. They have on-site baking and pastries! I have hosted a birthday party here as well as casual family dining. The wait staff is busy but attentive. Be prepared to be there for a while - just because of the amount of food and options. You just want to stay and savor it all!
We used to love coming here. Brought our out-of-town granddaughters. Service was slow. When the food finally came, it was just terrible. The sauce on the pasta was gluey. Waiter didn't come back to see if we needed anything additional. It was a real disappointment. Then, when took our granddaughters into the bakery to each pick out a special treat to take home. The younger one picked out a cupcake. It was inedible and disgusting. We won't be back.
The food was good as always, but our service was incredibly slow. It seemed like our waitress kept forgetting about us. I think over two hours for dinner for two adults and one child is too long, especially because we just ordered salads and entrees, we did not even get dessert (including the dessert that is supposed to come with the kid's meal).
The food was okay! Not out of this world Italian but pretty standard fare. The mini meatballs appetizer was a good portion for my table to share, but they were a little bland and squishy. I had the chicken parm which was okay. Not a lot of cheese and a little bit heavy on the sauce, but good nonetheless. I'll still come back because this place is so cool.
Food was delicious! Everyone enjoyed the octopus appetizer. Three of us had the red snapper dish which was outstanding. The half rack of ribs was also amazing. One of the guys said the short ribs were tasty but very fatty. Pasta dish had to be a special order due to dietary need and it was perfect. Portion sizes were plentiful. No one left hungry that's for sure! Of course the bread was amazing as usual. Compliments to Chef Francesco and Chef Michael.
Waitress was not as attentive as last time we were there. We had to ask other staff to get her to come back to our table several times.
After dinner we went to the bar, only to find out that the entertainer was at the outdoor bar. Ordinarily that would have been fine because it is lovely out there but it was quite chilly and there were no heat lamps. There were only 3 parties then just 2 outside while the indoor bar was filled with customers. The singer was descent but not as good as Dave Beasley who was there the last time.
I picked up a variety of desserts from the bakery and we ate those at the bar. Katy was our bartender and she was delightful but she was running between both bars and had a few tables so she probably missed out on a few extra drinks from our party. She does make a really good mojito though!
All in all we had a very nice evening.
The food and bread were wonderful! My entire party (four of us) had the Open Flamed NY Strip Steak, 12 oz each a different way and was very pleased. Two of us substituted the potatoes for mushroom risotto and was even more pleased! We had the house cabernet and it was enjoyable. Prior to dinner, I ordered a cake (it was an anniversary celebration) and it came without any hiccups. The chef, after hearing of the occasion, brought out a few house pastries. Nice touch!
The only thing I would like to see different is the attire of the visitors. Such a rustic, romantic and established environment worthy of people who can dine in more than a tee shirt, shorts and flip flops especially after 7:00 pm. What has happened to getting dressed for dinner? Maybe my guests and I are old fashioned but dining is more than just eating. I'm afraid Il Vecchio will lose its look if they allow guests to come in looking like they've just gotten off of the couch. We know it is a family environment, however, it's okay to come to the table a bit more put together. I have no doubts we'll return for the food, but hope the standards for attire are upgraded.
I had a coupon on my smart phone but it wasn't the correct app and your manager at the restaurant would not accept it. Luckily I asked first because this was the first time I used a coupon on the phone and didn't know it had to be a special app. So we left and had dinner at Fortes. PS don't pay attention to the ratings I had to put something down to submit.
Great meal. We've eaten here twice, and had good food and service each time. Rare that my selective family eats out and we all walk away happy, so it's saying a lot that we were all satisfied. My veal scallopini was slightly over cooked, but I liked it just the same. The cakes leave some to be desired (I'm an experienced home baker, so we are quite spoiled), but the bread is wonderful
